  3. Re:Libertarians == CORPORATION WORSHIPPERS on Copyright Office Asks For Public Comments On DMCA · · Score: 2

I'm a registered Libertarian, but I tend to agree that the party has become a bastion of right-wing corporatists. Libertarian ideals call for minimizing government interference with the free market, but hardly any Libertarians recognize that:

-- Intellectual property law is governmental interference in the free market.

-- The very existance of CORPORATIONS as legal entities is governmental interference in the free market.

    ...and so on.

That being said, the libertarian party is still the party that most closely reflects my views, so for now I'll keep trying to influence the party to respect its own principles, and ALL that they imply.

If I understand correctly, radio stations pay the music publishers (owners of copyright in the compositions), but not the recording labels (owners of copyright in the recordings).

  8. Re:I don't understand... on New Zaurus Prototype, Sony Palm OS 5 Devices, Yopy 3500 · · Score: 2

I agree. I'm very pleased with my Zaurus SL-5500, and one of its best features is its form factor -- I can put it in a suit-jacket pocket, quickly pull it out when needed, and often I can use it with one hand. If I have to deal with a bigger device, and use two hands just to open it up to get at my data, I may as well use my laptop.

Then again, if a sufficiently powerful device with the new Zaurus form factor had been available, I might have been willing to spilt the difference and buy one of those instead of a laptop + PDA.

In appellate proceedings this is done all the time -- it's called a "friend of the court" brief (though such briefs are rarely free of bias.

Not in any way I know of. As someone else pointed out, to commit a crime you have to violate a specific provision of the criminal code.

However, if a duty exists, it's possible to be found civilly liable (for negligence, for example) for failing to satisfy that duty.
