All I'm saying is that I've got the same laptop as the original poster, and although I've seen the problems he's describing, I personally haven't experienced them. By "taking care of", I don't mean opening the lid with tweezers or anything outrageous like that. I mean opening and closing the lid with a normal amount of force, not carrying the laptop around by the lid, and taking other reasonable measures (that are probably in TFM) to prevent damage to a $2000 piece of equipment.
Other side of the coin - my grandfather bought a Toshiba laptop from Best Buy, with the extended warranty. After about 18 months of use, something went majorly south with it (I don't know what). He dropped it off at Best Buy for repair and a day later, they called him and said they would replace it. They even hand-delivered the replacement to his home - in a somewhat remote part of Texas!
Agreed - we've been using Dell products almost exclusively for the last several years, and we;ve got ZERO complaints with their service.
I've got the Inspiron 7500 (1400x1050 in X - w00t!) and I'm aware of the problems with the hinges. I'm careful with mine, but several ham-handed sales goons in my company managed to break the hinges on theirs. Dell replaced the units (under warranty) with no hassle whatsoever.
Bottom line - if you don't plan on taking care of your $2000+ baby, then shell out the extra money for the 3-year warranty.
Well, as of about 10:05 CST, it looks like we got us a little 40 b/s link with our orbiter! Congrats, NASA!!
Operator: We get signal.
Captain: What !
Operator: Main screen turn on.
Captain: It's You !!
Odyssey: How are you gentlemen !!
Odyssey: All your Mars are belong to us.
That's a scream - reminds me of when I worked at a naval nuclear reactor training facility. They x-rayed everything that went into the facility, so we would put things that would produce interesting x-ray silhouettes in our lunch coolers... loads of fun on the swing shift!
Everybody knows that a real Jedi would send the census-taker away with a wave of his hand and something like "These aren't the statistics you're looking for.. go about your business."
What better and more proper burial for a sailor than in his ship at the bottom of the sea?
Speaking as a former sailor, I can tell you that not all of them would agree with you. For many sailors, it is "just a job", and they'd much rather be buried on dry land, by their families.
Dude, have you been on a naval vessel lately? Ball caps are standard issue!
(US anyways...)

Yep, blood centers are packed. The accounts of National Disaster Relief Fund, however, are not. If you can afford to give ANY amount of money, please do.

If you have not yet donated blood, money, or service to the National Disaster Relief Fund, please consider doing so. I realize that request is obvious and redundant, but bear with me.
I can honestly say that the WTC, Pentagon, and Pennsylvania disasters have had a stronger effect on me than I would have ever imagined. I've been somewhat wigged out for the past two days, functioning on auto-pilot in order to get along with the business of life while I deal with feelings of horror, sadness, rage, and worst of all, helplessness.
Horror subsides - the media onslaught will always lead to de-sensitization. The images and video remain horrific, but somehow become lest horrifying through continued exposure. (I hope that makes sense...)
Sadness persists. It should. You should never be able to look back on September 11th and not feel sadness.
Helplessness is altogether different - it won't subside on its own. It requires action, and gone unchecked, can amplify every other negative emotion. This is why I finally got off my ass and donated last night. I realized that it's pointless to feel helpless, because it's so easy to help.
Give blood. If, like me, you can't give blood, give money. It's needed. If you don't have any money, go volunteer at your local blood center. If nothing else, pack an ice chest full of bottled water and hand it out to people waiting in line to donate blood! Do something. On September 11, 2002, when I ask you "What did you do to help one year ago?", I hope you have an answer that you're comfortable with.
So I've conquered helplessness. Horror will take care of itself. I welcome sadness as a sign of my own humanity.

Interesting - I read Xineohpoel's original "prophecy" that was posted on 8/31/01. He originally stated that something would happen on 9/1/01 ("911"). When that didn't happen, on 9/4 he said "Wait 7 days, and then maybe I'll answer this post. You see, I am going away in seven days, and you will not hear from me again."
Now, I'm inclined to believe that alt.prophecies.nostradamus is populated by full-on wackadoos, but that's a pretty good call.
And the real kicker now is that the original 911 post from 8/31 has disappeared from groups.google.com. What's up with that??
I'm not looking to troll or start a flamewar here (I use Free software every day), but if one is required by law to use Free software, doesn't that represent a loss of freedom? Isn't freedom of choice important as well?
Now what we need is some kind of Napster-type client so we can bypass CD's and steal Metallica tunes directly from James Hetfield's guitar!
Had to do a doubletake on that one... when I skimmed over it, it looked like "So that's why I have genitalia."
Sorry - Friday on my mind... :)
Yeah, or you could get your own TV already!
Reality is scary enough!
Step 1: Build Server
Step 2: Build clients which work with the server
Hey you forgot:
Step 3: Profit!

Let's see if they get letters from the "BSA"..

That leaves only sweet, sweet rage.

Robot cats are the way to go here... they're much cheaper to make, since they only need to be programmed to sit there and ignore you...

Yeah, me too... :(
The Labs has put together some Perl stuff that will do basic swf creation and manipulation, maybe someone could build on that?
