    But by pointing to the exta # X-boxen they sold they have the leverage they want to sell the development kits and licences etc to the 3rd party developers and they still make their money it's not until the NEXT Xbox when the developers say screw you, we didn't make nay money last time we're going with Sony. ....that's when MS finally loses money (if they were too dumb to notice that game sales were low and duck out of the market prior to Xbox2)

    You don't use multimode for long distances, it's really only for building/campus networks anything that requires a stretch longer than 500m for 10Mbps or 2km for 100Mbps requires single mode fibre.

    besides you can always use media converters.

    Yes, that's right RFC = proposal.

    I think too many people in the industry forget that RFCs are proposals. It would be nice if the whole world followed the same basic set of rules for internet communication, which is what RFCs are born of, but the worst that can happen to you if you don't follow the suggestions in a given RFC is certain companies/individuals who would like you to will refuse to deal with you.

    This may mean finding a new registrar, or ISP or whatever... it's the AUPs of your various service providers that you really need to worry about, THOSE are the real laws of the net.

    I think the interesting part of that article is that they mention that future models may include DVD recording... this from a company who's pushing copy protection and DRM in the music world... guess it's because Sony doesn't produce as much TV content.

    I'm sure Sony has just released several new TVs but there hasn't been much innovation in TV design lately. back when there were only a small handful of HDTVs a NEW HDTV with features that weren't available on other HDTVs was considered news worthy. ...it'll pass as PVRs become more comman place and folks get bored of hearing about the newest ones. But for now we'll just have to live with the odd story on /. ...you know you don't HAVE to read the story if the headline doesn't interest you right?

    MS just did something that's about to revive Java.
    Something in the last set of service packs and hot fixes in the last month or so has made it so that people are starting to get install on demand windows pop up asking to install MS JVM, but when it downloads it pops up saying that version of the JVM is not compatible with your windows version and you need to get the latest service pack ...funny thing is it does this even with the latest service pack installed a lot of the time.

    My solution: go to java.sun.com, download it from there. My customers are quite happy with this. ...now if only I could get Yahoo to listen to me when I tell them their "java" chat program in the YahooGroups site needs to be fixed because it tells me I need MS JVM to run it.

    This whole thread amazes me, is it really that engrained in people's minds that an engagement ring not only needs to be a diamond, but also a total surprise?

    The better answer (and the most obvious one it seems to me) is to ask her what SHE thinks.

    Maybe I'm just wierd, but surely she'd have an opinion one way or the other, and might just apprecaiate that you recognized that she has opinions and asked her.

    True, although not because it couldn't be.
    There are several games that have been written for Linux and run well on it.
    It's really just a matter of economics and chicken before egg syndrome. Users are reluctant to go to an operating system that doesn't have the software they want and programmers are reluctant to program for a platform that doesn't have the users.

    well, consider this, now that the game has been going for a few years you can buy the original game in the stores for about $10 (which includes a month) or, better yet every now and then it shows up FREE in some magazine. ...of course that just gets you hooked enough to go out and buy Kunark or Velious. (sp? ...I gave up Evercrack some time ago)

    All they would need to do to get me hooked on that crack again is port it to Linux. ...and worse yet, if you cancel your account you can't sell/give the old disk to someone else, they have to go to the store and buy it because once you've used a serial code to create a character that code can never be used again, even if all characters assiociated with it are destroyed and the account cancelled.

    That doesn't include a monitor though. You can get a nice TV tuner with built in 27 inch monitor for $199 at Walmart

    The biggest monitor Walmart Sells for that $299 PC is 22 inches and costs an extra $838 ...of course you COULD always hook your $299 PC to the $199 TV monitor mentioned above if you are just using it to watch television anyways... but then I think in the long run you're better off using the tuner that came with the TV then at least your simpsons episodes don't have DIVX compression artifacts.

    This is excellent news. ...but like you say they need to do the layout and modeler.

    I almost bought an Amiga 4000 and toaster when I was in high school just to play with (in highscool $4000 for a computer to use as a toy seemed reasonable to me)

    I still wouldn't mind getting into 3d animation as a hobby. Any suggestions for Linux based modelers?

    (I have only 3 computers at home, none of them run Windows ...one runs SunOS though, thinking about moving it to Solaris)

    I guess I should be fair, the MCSE was the best $600 I spent when I was job hunting between University and my first real job. I had a degree in History with a minor in Comp.Sci. ...hard to get an interview with those credentials, MCSE got me in the door, being a geek got me the job.

    I have a cell phone for work, I'm on call every other week, so I can't avoid it... but really when I'm not on call, or if I had a different job, I'd still HAVE a cell, it would just be turned off all the time. I'd only really want it so I could make a phone call whenever i wanted, certainly not so people could call me. It really bothers me when people call me on the cell. (not counting work... that bothers me but for a different reason) I try not to let my cell number circulate amongst friends and family, except a few people for emergencies... but it still gets out (and I have a different number every few months because the phones they give us at work are really crappy)

    Flash works on Linux too.. jut most flash sites don't use flash well. ....not to mention it eliminates the portion of the population who can't see/can't see well.

    99% of the flash sites I've seen were hindered, rather than enhanced by their use of flash.

    If it is annoying or difficult to navigate it is not a good site no matter how much you spent to create it. The main idea is to convey information, if it's not easy to get information the webdesigner is not doing their job. Flash or not makes no difference, but there seems to be a very high percentage of flash users who are, quite simply poor webdesigners who hide behind the flashiness (pun intended) of their sites hoping no one notices that there isn't any info there.

    But, since Palm's early adopters are techies and techies like to play games it makes sense that if a tiny change can make it easy to play games AS WELL AS do business they might as well do it.

    Palm's Comdex booth (which I saw at Comdex Canada this week) now sports 3 pictures of palm devices doing various tasks, and one of those 3 pictures is a game (mostly to show off the colour screen)

    The only thing that has changed is instead of just up and down, it looks like you now have a rocker that can do up, down, left and right.
