Those 2" screens on other devices are small enough, do I really need 20% of that to be taken up by a play/pause button that I already have hardware buttons for?

Based on the talk time estimate, I'd say standby is probably on the order of a week.

On thing that is not called out in this article (at least not well) is that Apple is saving R&D costs and R&D time by not having to develop its own chipset like is has done in the past. Instead Apple is utilizing Intel developed and manufactured chipsets. Intel has the economy of large volumes for their chipsets, Apple did not.

Uh, actually, they specifically mentioned this in the article:
But during the time it used PowerPC chips, Apple also designed its own custom chip that sat between the PowerPC and other parts of the computer, such as the main memory and graphics chips. That chip has been supplanted by the two less expensive Intel chips, meaning at least some of the development costs associated with that custom chip have been saved. "It's really not an Apples to Apples comparison, if you will," says Instat/MDR chip analyst Kevin Krewell.

Most likely it was just because the people that designed it worked for NeXT, so they were comfortable with the coding environment.

That means that the cache between the counter and actual songs sold count is greater than than a lot of people thought. I've heard estimates of a 5,000-7,000 song difference, but the actual must be something like 500,000-700,000 songs! Trying to time your buying to the front page counter is just completely hopeless.

Steve Jobs made a big deal in a keynote about how laptops accounted for more than half of Apple sales, and it would be the "year of the laptop." After all, the ADC agreement for his free account wouldn't have anything to do with the Tiger beta, since he wouldn't have had access to it anyway.
