Before my university instituted a software lock down kit and group policies on their Windows machines we had a major problem keeping computers running software wise because students would stick all kinds of junk on lab PCs. Once our plan was put in to effect the devices were used more for what they were intended. The lesson is no different for devices like the iPad if it's school property. Lock it down or deal with the consequences.

  4. Control the devices on Ask Slashdot: Is E-Learning a Viable Option? · · Score: 1

Lock them down, you need to assert control over school electronic property. This should go beyond what walled gardens like Apple does and if Apple can't provide that kind of control to individual institutions then you need to look to other tools instead of iPads and such. Just because a student can take it home doesn't mean the student should have complete control of the device since it's still school property.

That sounds like something from my parents generation where you could get a job and feel like it was stable. Business these days has proven over and over again that a job is not stable like it used to be. The norm is to move on more then it was back then and people have changed. If you want people to stick around longer then the norm needs to swing back to long term with good pay and benefits. Otherwise enjoy the turn over rates staying high as the people you try to employee look out for their own bottom lines since their job isn't helping in that area like it once was.

I will say this, I'm thankful I found a job where I can do the 5, 10, 15 year thing. Maybe I'll get lucky and do it as long as my father did in his 42 years of service at one company. Who knows though in this day and age?

Don't say you can still get to the Windows 7 interface. It's not the same as running vanilla Windows 7 for a USER. (Key being the four letter word at the end.)

2> As I get older I find myself in the category of a USER more and more and I like keeping things consistent so I can focus on newer things myself. I don't like disruptions that have me relearning the way I do things just because somebody else thinks they can give me a better way. If I want an improvement I'll ask for it. I haven't needed anything major since the transition from Windows 3.1 to 95/98/XP/etc. This is why I won't be buying Windows 8, I don't like the direction they're heading with the interface. I do like their modularity idea I just wish they'd leave the desktop to the desktop and the phone interface to tablets and phones.

I have to say that I enjoyed the flexibility of the original Netbook Edition then the spawn which is Unity it fostered. That offered more control over how things looked then the current Unity does. I installed KDE and XFCE from the package manager today on my systems, I'm now trying to determine which flavor I want to jump to from the main Ubuntu branch since Unity is going to be the new way of things.

Side note, I sure as hell am not going back to Windows full time especially after I saw that Microsoft was pulling a Unity with Windows 8 by slapping the Windows Phone 7 interface on it and calling it the future. Seriously developers, if you want do build something for tablets and phones then STICK with tablets and phones and stay off my desktop OS's.
