And MS pushes no agendas? Isn't that how this whole mess got started?

My state was using an OS/2 based system for a while for DMV "cust serv" rep terminals, and also Dept of Rev and Taxation. Not sure if it's still alive like that, but it is possible. The law hopefully is to prevent taxpayer funds from helping companies/ind with disreputable records.

If Redhat or SUSE or Mandrake or the main individual behind any particular distro were laid under the same charges, I would hope that the gov (or private citizens) would choose not to support those companies.

However, since it is MS, it is potentially leverage for the "alternative OS" crowd. I want something that works and works well, and doesn't support twisted business practices. Good luck.

And the argument is, "Don't use this software because the company has been found guilty in a civil antitrust suit." The topic at present is about law and not function.

I shall choose friends among men, but neither slaves nor masters. And I shall choose only such as please me, and them I shall love and respect, but neither command nor obey. And we shall join our hands when we wish, or walk alone when we so desire. For in the temple of his spirit, each man is alone. Let each man keep his temple untouched and undefiled. Then let him join hands with others if he wishes, but only beyond his holy threshold.

For the word "We" must never be spoken, save by one's choice and as a second thought. This word must never be placed first within man's soul, else it becomes a monster, the root of all the evils on earth, the root of man's torture by men, and of an unspeakable lie.

The word "We" is as lime poured over men, which sets and hardens to stone, and crushes all beneath it, and that which is white and that which is black are lost equally in the grey of it. It is the word by which the depraved steal the virtue of the good, by which the weak steal the might of the strong, by which the fools steal the wisdom of the sages.

What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it? What is my wisdom, if even the fools can dictate to me? What is my freedom, if all creatures, even the botched and the impotent, are my masters? What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree and to obey?

But I am done with this creed of corruption.

I am done with the monster of "We," the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame.

And now I see the face of god, and I raise this god over the earth, this god whom men have sought since men came into being, this god who will grant them joy and peace and pride.

    This god, this one word:

    "I."

    Concerning SFX:

CG is cool and impressive. It just doesn't look solid yet. It's still too smooth and cold.

Compare the X-Wings opening S-foils for the Death Star approach in ANH vs. the yellow Naboo fighters heading for the donut.

Deep down, you know the X-Wings are models, but you don't know the scale. It's definitely film of a solid object, and you don't have to work too hard to imagine that you're 6 meters away from the canopy of the fighter that's going to shoot a proton torp down an exhaust port.

CG looks like CG, and it's going to be a few more years before I get used to how it looks now. Either go total immersion a la Final Fantasy, or a purposeful mix like Tron or Last Starfighter. But the style of effects are bleeding life from the fantasy instead of adding to it. TPM felt a bit like Roger Rabbit in space with poor Liam Neeson trying to deliver lines to Phantom Actors, along with all the obvious animations.

I realize and accept that except for matte shots or C. B. DeMille, CG is the just about the only way to show a humongous army on a fictional world. But using it just because it's there is an aesthetic crime. And no, I don't believe vinyl sounds better than CD.

The CG jarring effect is bad enough for me that my favorite set of tapes is the original trilogy right before it was taken off the market for the "Special Editions." Though, I'd be curious to check out the newer ESB and RotJ just to check the scenes. But I have both SW and SWSE, and I keep being dragged out of the second by an animated bantha or a screentest macking Jabba... At least I know I could theoretically touch everything in the original. I can even overlook the halos of the TIE fighters...

It's tough to explain--It's like the only thing missing in the scene is you, vs. a post card that says, "Wish you were here!" with a few Playboy cutouts pasted on the beach photo on the front.

I eagerly look forward to the day when I can't tell the difference. But I predict about 10 years to patch it up to that level. Unfortunately, because it is so cheap compared to plastic and latex, it will continue to be used "until further notice." All that even after Lucas and Dykstra did phenomenal groundbreaking work with computer guided camera systems and movement.

    Well, here's hoping anyway.

I have to agree. MPAA and RIAA maneuverings of the past two or so years still give me extreme pause before I think about paying for a movie or renting a DVD. Whatever happened to the mass boycotts of major studios and labels that all were raving about? The evil's still out there, folks, and every buck you give them lets them take their lockdowns that much further.

Of course, I don't watch TV and I have a friend who works at a viddy store, so I haven't paid in a while...

So hay! Give them as much money as you see fit. Go opening night and jack up the weekend numbers! Don't bother to trace the studio lines to see if you're supporting AOL-Time Warner and Sony Viacom Blockbuster and Fox Murdoch.

Ach, it's sad that causes are fads and we get acclimated to bad changes once it looks like they're not going away soon. Who's passing out flyers at the vidstores now?

Just do a search on RIAA and MPAA on Slashdot if these words aren't making sense. Because the situation hasn't changed, and to see Slashdot running movie reviews of megastudios every week is a craw in my side. It's almost as if the editors said, "Well, we didn't make a spit lick of difference, so let's talk about the latest pablum, shall we? Go see it! It's fantastical."

Screw the media--my consumption is at a trickle now, and I'm back to books, live shows, and non-mega releases.

But make your own choices. The same defiling studios and labels that entertain you are still on the same tack as two years ago.

Hypotheticals: Sony vs. EFF? AOL-Time Warner vs. EFF? Oh, well, nice fight, good knowing you.

There's a pretty nice arcade at this casino close to town-- $6 for 2 hours unlimited. For this game two players face a screen, each at a 30 degree angle to it. A box between the players has 2 vidcams, one for each player. All movement and character selection is done by stepping forward or back out of a circle. Punches, jumps, crouches, and kicks are all valid moves, and three rounds can be pretty exhausting when you're not 8 yrs old any more. Because it's using some AI (presumably zones--I got told to "get back in the circle" more than once) some of my moves didn't register like my swinging haymaker and my tiger style.

But its fun--it's just sad that we're not up to "beat the hell out of an animatronic robot" that would represent the moves of the other player. Because it's not the same punching air when there's no contact at the end of a move. You'd get people shouting their battle cries and heeeeyaa! once that's established.

But check out the flashy VR sections of the arcades--sometimes they're actually kinda cool. My other fave that I didn't try was some lame dance game, but the attract mode demo was loud and obnoxious enough that I didn't have to go "werk my movez." Oh, yah, it's good date stuff too--skirts and motorcycle games...
