The Devil's in the details here and the OP provided sufficient details. Your summery doesn't. And furthermore, the "TL;DNR" meme is yet another example of willful ignorance in snarky packaging.
Relax guy. I was only trying to humourously point out that if you wan't to use programs like Tor you have to know about the details (like the OP) otherwise you're actually making things worse. Which excludes most of the population, who will probably understand more of my summary than of the OP's post. You can remove the rod from your backside now.
So goverment should disallow "all the cool gadgets and online tools" so stupid people who dont know how to use them can maintain their privacy?
No, they should regulate the companies based in their countries to respect people's privacy. Mind blowing concept, huh ? The EU actually has made someprogress towards this but not enough.
The whole reason we have this representative government thing is to make sure the rights of the many aren't violated for the good of a few. It'd be nice if governments grew a pair and started doing their job.
I bet a robotic "reach around" would sell better though.
This being Japan I'm kinda surprised they don't have them yet, I'd have thought there'd at least be a female tentacle version (sailor fuku sold separately.)
And by copying you are "taking" an intangible property that provides revenue to the maker of the software. Property can either be tangible or intangible. The notion of intangible property is an ancient, time honored one.
That's an interesting point about pzoplz not paying for content but to reward the creator. I wonder what would happen if you released shareware that played a video of the programmer asking to register the program instead of a dialog box putting a "face" on the software ? Someone should try this (not Balmer though that would just lead to broken screens.)
Please. Every touchscreen phone has capability for books. The difference here is that for reading you need something bigger. By the time any company "perfects" the tablet, nobody will care.
Yes we are very close with touchscreen phones which is why I see these devices relegated to a small niche soon-ish: dedicated text readers. The rest of us will use the perfected tablet (which I always image as a PADD) : large touch screen, wireless connectivity, full computer functionality (video replay, games, etc.)
Also here you have android, so you can probably run the B&N software on your android phone (very likely). Also means you can probably run android apps and run android features, especially over wifi.
It's limited by the E-ink screen. Low refresh rates mean applications would have to be more static or would feel clunky at best and would have to adapted to display on a greyscale screen. Basically it would look like an original macintosh. Modern applications like video and gaming are out of the question, unless you'd like something retro like Game & Watch. Again it's a device which will soon find itself pushed into a niche by more versatile products.
Good find, hadn't seen that one. Still most players look to me like their design departments haver capitulated, it would be nice to see more innovation in this market.
Yeah there are plenty of wall-mount brackets already available for the mini, people could just mount these next to where their modem is installed or in a small cupboard. Ideal for small offices, quiet and unobtrusive.
I actually had one of my coworkers tell me that iPod is the only "true" player and I should stop using "ipod knockoffs" like Insignia.
I guess it's completely coincidental that since the ipod almost all mp3 players (including Insignia's) arrange their buttons in a "wheel" configuration and have form factors nearly identical to ipods huh ? Knockoff might be a little strong, let's say there are a lot of players which are an "homage" to the market leader;-)
i'll buy the paper books or download them on my iphone via the kindle or B&N reader apps. loaning books sounds like a good option and i hope they bring it to the B&N iphone app. with websites like Goodreads that link to facebook, it can be a viral marketing strategy
These will be instantly obsolete when someone (Apple?) perfects the tablet, single purpose devices won't be competitive. Of course this is just my opinion but the only real advantage I see is e-ink and that won't cut it against a multi-purpose reading, browsing, etc. device unless you're a publisher who does nothing all day but read.
Perhaps for people who don't care about their data... Privacy, security, accountability and reliability cannot be ensured by a third party. I'll keep my data in-house thank you.
In theory it could. The problem today is that the risk is borne entirely by the consumer while it should be the other way 'round. The day a consumer can hold the provider financially liable for any loss of data or leak of secure information is the day cloud computing will really take off. But it won't be with any of the current players as it will require a rock solid reputation. Maybe the Pirate Party guys should take the hint from Doctorows' "Little Brother" and begin offering cloud services ?
Why not price it much more generously and make it "one" product versus many, with installation options for multimedia, and make "home" a mode or something?
I'm thinking single copies at maybe $50 and five license packs for $150. I think they would probably sell more, and in the long run probably *make* more versus dumping a ton of money into antipiracy efforts and then pricing it sky high.
Because the stock price would drop. 90% of what MS does is to placate Wallstreet, not please their customers.
This is why the iPhone has become so entrenched, it has the developers. Its not just a matter of building hardware that matches Apple, you now have to build an ecology to match Apple.
Also why it was absolutely brilliant to not allow flash, java, etc programming on the iPhone. All those developers now have skills which translate more or less easily to mac development.

That's why you don't want to use Tor to log in anywhere that doesn't use SSL.
Don't do that. If you go out through a malicious exit node you're leaving yourself wide open to man in the middle attacks.

The company who figures out how to protect our privacy while using all the cool gadgets and online tools is going to make a boat load of money.
Because you know these days we need companies to do what the governments should be doing.
TL;DR : only use Tor if you know what the hell you are doing.

What is this, digg? Cracked joke pages don't belong here.
But whining about what belongs on Slashdot does so they are just offering you a platform to do what you do best.

Don't be silly, he won't be built for another couple of thousand years. We still have to turn the planet radioactive first.
Damn I loved that game. Link for those of you who don't get the joke, now go play it in DOSbox.

Apple wasn't the first to use a "wheel"... See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_PMP300 (Dunno if it was the first, but it was def before Apple)

Are we looking at the next generation of stealth technology?
If you're looking at it wouldn't it be the last generation stealth technology ?
Until the smart dolphins who've already left shake their heads at mankind (and their stupid brethren) that stayed behind.
You're saying some stayed on porpoise ?
To quote MonkeyBoy, err, Steve Ballmer...
