Well, it's a bit more than that. WinNT shares no code whatsoever with the old windows code. It was written from the ground up by some of the designers of VMS. The OS/2 layer is pretty much only a compability sublayer in the OS. doesn't make it my fav OS, but still, it's more than window slapped on top of OS/2
Well, the ISS is also a learning platform for how to deal with prolonged time in space. much needed for a mars mission when the austronauts has to stay in microgravity for about a 1/2 - 2 years (correct number?). We also learn how to assemble larger structures in space, which also probably will be needed for a mars (and beyond!) mission.
Yes, shuttle comes with lots of goodies and can do lots of stuff that other launchers can't in terms of research. But just using it as a 'truck' just to move heavy stuff into orbit doesn't seem to make the best use of it, something like the russian launch vehicle seems more appropriate then. just my 0.02 euros
Well yes, it's available on a few phones todays. However most phones out on the market do not support MMS. Also, with the rather hefty price on MMS. I doubt most ppl are gonna use it as much as SMS anytime soon.
THis might be more appropriate for europe/asia, but I suppose the mobile messaging market is gonna explode in the states as well as it has done elsewhere.
Learn stuff about SMS Messaging, including the protocols used (SMPP, CIMD, EMI, SEMA, etc, etc). Nokia got a opensource CIMD API, Logica got a OS SMPP API, both in Java, good place to get some code to look at.
Also try to get into the MMS stuff (nxt generation SMS - gonna take a few years to break through - if ever!)
well, northern eurpoe wont have much of a summer after the gulf stream's gone. if one look at a map, one can see northern europe is on the same latitude as alaska. Gonna be damn cold... Time to buy a little bit of land down Spain I suppose!
Wouldn't NGPT be better for apps with very high anount of threads? Do most of the thread scheduling in userspace, thus save the kernel from having to deal with too much.
nope, sockets aren't proper 'files' for example. Sounds like you're thinking of plan9. v. cool OS made by Bell labs. Not many use it though. belive K (or was it R??) was involded in it as well. THink of it as 'unix without the mistakes made by unix'. Still prefer good ol' *nix though;-)
IIRC, does the most of win 3.1 and 3.11 bypass the DOS and bios functions when it has been loaded. it pretty much uses dos as a bootstrap. there are some dos functions used in the old win, but video isn't one of them. bear in mind dos viedo functions were only text based, in order to do graphics you gotta go for the metal anyway.
OK, I know about the DR-DOS thing, which was a nasty one. But how did MS destroy Wordperfect? From what I remember, Wordperfect didn't come out in a win version until word already had a quite large following - thus they missed the boat. Novell went and screwed themselves up fairly good, MS FUD did pretty much the rest (mind you Novell is getting better again). I'm not saying that I don't believe MS is a monopoly, quite the opposite, I they got broken up according to the original deal. THisg is what I want to say is that I doubt MS had all this in mind in the 80's while it still was fairly small. These tactics has come now later (around win 3.11). No, I don't think BillG is an evil man (think hussein, stalin, hitler, etc, etc), but I do think power corrupts and skews your vision. Yeah, they do shitty things in business but that doesn't mean they can have a heart to help people in other areas.
He formed Microsoft with the intent to break the law
I dislike MS for their business tactics and bullying just like everyone else, but, jezz, come on, this is just moronic...
MS were a small software company making basic intepreters and stoke gold just by chance thanks to their OS deal with IBM. Yeah, the more they grown the more they have abused their power, but that wont make most of the peopl working there *evil* per see. From their point of view they're just defending their position in the market.
Well, could be some people just don't mind if that happens. Basically (IMHO), All GPL does is protecting the code from being snatched by someone. If you worry about it, go for GPL, otherwise, if you're ok with it, go for BSD or other less restrictive licences.
actually, I think that idea have been around before (reflecting away a certain amount of the sun's rays). Not that we can pull of something like that now, but maybe later!
THose would be the species that kill themselves off before getting to the space explore stage. Why does it all have to be so competitive? Why couldn't a species reach high intelligence by just curiosity??
Think you're missing the point. Maybe we're *not* one of the 'chosen' ones that will reach this stage. THink of it as all more aggressive species have killed themselves off and only the few good peaceful ones actually made it through to the starship age. anyway, if there were baddies. What would it be on earth to exploit that they couldn't find elsewhere on pretty much any planet/asteroid/create it themselves using nano tech? Why the (poss. minor) hassle of attacking earth when it's easier to just go and get it/build it.
Wrong, most new software do not really need any whizz-bang graphics - I would consider it pretty bad design if they did need it just in order to rub a text editor, compiler, etc, etc. Hey, I can run pretty much all new software on my good ol' 16MB PCI TNT card - both linux and win stuff. Yes, suppose I can't run any of the new 3D games, but then again that's not what I do. Maybe the old Myst or C&C, but the card is more than up for that
Hey!, got something to show my mates at work now! ;-)

thanks for the link. I thought some ppl gone mad there for a while! ;-)
yuck, not a pretty sight....
Columbia has been renovated, should be able to get there now. Look here!

oops, sorry, me misreading...
But true anyway, metrics makes more sense, might be because I grown up with it though
IIRC NASA does use metrics, it was a third party developer which used imperial.
Wouldn't NGPT be better for apps with very high anount of threads? Do most of the thread scheduling in userspace, thus save the kernel from having to deal with too much.
MS still got Orange and Samsung(?), but that's the only ones they got as 3rd party developer, IIRC. But anyway, yes, very good news! :-D

Isn't that fairly "un-Hollywood" ????

not to forget is the rather high atmospheric pressure, about 90 times higher than on earth, nice...
