* GUI everything: If it's not a system crash, the desktop PC should be able to handle everything in GUI. Perhaps console programs that have a GUI counterpart (you run guiFdisk and you get a pretty "partition magic" type interface, but the real work is done by fdisk). Both parts would probably need to be written together for this to work seemlessly.
Mandrake already does this....
Just yesterday I setup my friend's scanner, TV card, and got his networked windows printer working in linux via *purely GUI* tools.
If you're the type that doesn't care for speed, and only cares for such things as SSH, mail, etc. then you definately want to look into Sprint's older Wireless Web.
Its pretty slow, actually its pretty damn slow, its about 19.2kbps. BUT.... its also only 5 dollars a month. AND, you do not get charged for how much data you transfer. Your wireless internet time comes out of your normal cell phone plan. So you can use it during the night and weekend for free. (NOTE: you need a standard dialup company to dial into). Also Sprint has some phones that act as standard AT modems (a whole bunch actually), so linux users need to worry about such.
Verizon also has a great offer. They have Mobile Office which is pretty much the same as Sprint's service. However verizon provides you with a virtual ISP to dial up into. (*No extra* cost to anyone either)

KDE is now part of Debian, so if SuSE drops KDE it is always possible to divert effort into making Debian the best KDE distro (as well as the best GNOME distro).
Mod Parent down
Clearly this is uneeded pro debian FUD. Though debian does have some damn intelligent KDE packagers like Krusty (retired), and DanielS. Distros like Mandrake and Gentoo have amazing and much better support for KDE.
For the average person that needs to be able to plug in their digital camera without going into the terminal window, we think that the user's experience with any brand of Linux will be sub-par.
Apparently the parent poster does not read the comments of his/her fellow slashdotters. The majority (if not all 1 and up) comments have been on target with the correct discussion.
There is no reason to automagically put down the posters of slahdot in such a fashion.
Am I the only one who is tired of seeing "All distributions should be based on debian?"
The number of us non-debian users is far greater than the number of debian users..
Why aren't we speaking about why this is such a wrong idea? Why aren't we speaking up about all of debian's flaws ? Why are we letting our voice be trampled by some debian fans/finatics/bigots/etc ?
Apple recently announced the availability of a voice-recorder accessory for the iPod, but there's still no way to use the device to record high-quality audio. DJs who want to record their sets, people who want to encode their vinyl or cassette collections to MP3, or musicians who are looking for a replacement for their DAT recorder need this feature.
*Cough* DJ's and muscians all have ZERO plans of getting rid of their DAT tapes anytime soon.
When did americans become obsessed with this idea that a DJ's sole job is to scratch records ? No wonder our DJ's are pretty much crap.
Most of the big name DJ's I've seen rarely if ever bother to scratch. These DJ's are not concerned with such, instead they are concerned with creating a smooth flowing stream of music by engaging in the arts such as beat mixing, volume matching, etc.
I suggest looking on kazaa/usenet/etc for videos of any of the following DJ's in action, and one will easily see they are nothing like the american stereotype DJ. (Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Timo Mass, Paul Van Dyk, etc)
Sunny Dubey
PS: I'm not saying all american DJ's are crap. We've got some good ones like Sandra Collins, Mark Farina, Danny Tenaglia, and such.
Maybe this isn't the best reason to drive such a decision, but i think a lot of the noise and trolling from the linux camp of late has really put me off. I know *all* linux users aren't like this, but it's really turning into something don't want to be associated with.
Ironically these two lines make this post a troll itself. There is a huge difference between end users feuding and developers feuding. The latter is rare between both OSes, and it is what counts in life.
Do you think Alan Cox, et al are leaving linux because there are a few loud and zealous linux users ? If they aren't, why should you ?
I think its a grand idea to try another OS, but posting trollish reasons on slashdot is another story.
Nobody would choose any other laptop given the choice of an Apple powerbook and an equal PC one. The same holds for every other item they produce.
I am greatly tired of such over-used cliches.
My girlfriend has a PowerBook, and I have an IBM T30. There is no way on earth I would ever choose a flimsy PowerBook over my ThinkPad (which by the way, has the best keyboard-on-a-laptop ever)
My girlfriend has an Apple mouse, you know, the overpriced oval shaped single button mouse. Are you going to tell me that hunk of junk is supposed to beat the far more elegant Microsoft Mouse?
Let us put an end to this "Apple is automagically better" garbage. Sure Apple's products/projects are great, but it is an unneeded slap in the face to everyone else to assume there are inferior by default.
This is a really bad idea. Most students have cellular phones these days, so having any sort of voice capabilities in dorms is a waste of resources.
Not true!
My friend goes to DM, and she says that few have cell phones at the school. Additionally, if you look at all the major cell phone providers of the USA, none claim to have service in Hanover NH (the school's location). (There is a way you can get service over there via AT&T, but thats another story.)

This is not some sort of contest. The immaturaity level on fark.com is stunning and by far worse than what is seen on slashdot.
Look at the comments on this page relating to this story to see how bad it is on fark.com

Am I the only one thinking about this ?
I suspect that 9.2 will be 100% free as well. In such an event, "spyware" is simply *NOT* possible on the distro.
As for the ads .... lets just hope MDK comes to its senses :^)
