I use between 15GB and 100GB of "bandwidth" per month. Storage? zilch.
Maybe *you* aren't using the storage yourself but it takes a lot of space on the government's servers to index and cross reference your 100GB of browsing habits.
The bone of contention is really that they receive huge tax breaks while making neat profit
No company has ever paid a penny in taxes - who pays corporate income taxes? Their customers pay it. Gas at the pump costs enough already, dammit, without having to pay even more taxes on it! The oil companies WILL make their 8 to 10 % profit after tax so if you raise their taxes they'll have to charge more to be able to pay it.
The Internet. I don't think I've ever seen a prediction list that got that one
I think this one was as reasonably close as a 1968 prediction could be - he got that the employer's computer would communicate directly with the bank to work out your paycheck, the store computer with the bank computer to work out your payments, the house computer with the home shopping network computer to order your stuff. There's even the implied network of the daily newspaper getting to the screen in the car. He describes common modern national/global computer network functions and knows that various computer systems are communicating with each other but he just doesn't bother to label that communication mechanism. I think it's a little harsh to call it a complete miss just because it isn't labelled as such specifically.
I found the most interesting lapse to be that while he's worked out that there are computers doing all this important work, the users do not directly interact with the thing. His vision has the user looking at the television and working the telephone to place an order that the computer somehow detects and finishes. There is no interface to the computers for the users except by indirect methods.
Browsing the DVDs I think it was season 2, 2 part episodes titled 'Home'. I don't have time to watch them right now but I'm pretty sure that's where it is.
All his uncle had to do was go to register to vote. My wife went to get a new driver's license and was asked if she wanted to register to vote and handed the form to sign. She said she wasn't a citizen and the DMV person took the form back but there is NO burden of proof at all. Just sign the registration alleging you're a citizen and you get to vote. I took my birth cert to register to vote but the DMV person said she wasn't allowed to even ask for proof, nevermind require it.
There wasn't a body - she just disappeared. So whether she was killed or not is left to your imagination. Maybe she fell into a trans-warp dimensional flux rift in spacetime or somesuch Star Trekish thing.
Also, remember the prophesy the priest revealed way back when they were still at Kobol: a renegade demon will lead the way to Earth. Has everyone just assumed that referred to a Sharon?
Personally, I'm still holding out for Ellen to be the final Cylon. She was too much of a mess otherwise.
A committee of 6 must investigate "any alleged violation" simply by writing to the other committee members. ?!? Can you say witch hunt for the media: "Representative, do you not deny not ever being in public with your epidermis hanging out?"
And the really fun part is that this committee of 6 unelected persons is authorized to spend whatever needs to be spent out of the House budget to properly investigate these allegations that they've notified themselves about.
This is going to be another waste of taxpayers' money and a wildly partisan political media tool.
several million dollars that probably aren't going anywhere(which is enough money to do whatever you want for the rest of your life
Dream on; at current rates it takes a LOT more than 'several' million to do 'whatever you want for the rest of your life'. Every million is a lousy $20k/year or so in interest income, on which you pay tax. So the whopping sum of even $10M would put you comfortably upper middle class but hardly an out of control rock-n-roller if you wanted to keep it up.
And I thought the US electoral system sometimes came up with annoying results. Everyone in the US who thinks that should see the parent post's link for some serious electoral madness!
They are only doing this at Heathrow so any bad men can just hop on the shuttle bus and fly from Gatwick
LHR is only the *first* airport to roll it out; Gatwick and some others are close behind. And notice the clever way the new terminal was designed to handle both international and domestic flights so that this sort of thing would be required. The need is to prevent international transfer fliers to instead transfer to fly into a small local UK airport and have free roam of the country. Of course this was though of when the plans were on the drawing board but not released until now when the thing is already built and getting ready to open. Truly insidious. Why the Brits keep re-electing the socialist Labor party is a mystery. Throughout its entire history socialism has always led to oppressive governments.
Since McCain made noises in 2004 about being Kerry's VP nominee, I wouldn't be too suprised at him wanting Obama for VP.
The VP sits around and waits for a tie in the senate and then he gets to cast the tiebreaker vote. This is an EXTREMELY powerful ability IF the Senate is made up of equal or nearly members of both parties.
Other than that, the VP gets sent to state funerals in other countries because the Prez is too busy.
Why buy a Eee PC when I can get a Dell cheapie of the moment with 12X the power at the same or LESS price
Going through the tsa goon line these days with the "remove your laptop and put it in its own rubbermaid bin" being such a hassle that a little bity laptop that you can whip out of your bag is a great convenience. Plus the thing only adds barely a couple of pounds to said bag. And depending on which airline you have to use the seats are so crammed together that there's no room to open a 15" laptop because when the person in front leans back the screen catches on their seat and bows in half. Subcompacts are definitely worth the tradeoff in performance for frequent travellers, I assure you.
They don't have to give you change if they don't keep enough on hand for security reasons (there's almost always a sign to this affect) but if a $50 or a $100 is all you've got for a small purchase then I assure you, they'll take it if it's to pay for something you've already consumed.
why would they shelf it in the basement of their lawyer's office?
The problem is once you buy this widget to make hydrogen to power your car, you don't need to buy anything ever again except some power to run it. Bulk oil/gasoline sales to the power plant has nowhere near the margin of retail sales for cars. What would the drug companies try to do to someone who invented a miracle pill that made people immune to every possible disease and disorder forever?
Speaking of odds, what are the odds that if this turns out to be viable the inventors will have unfortunate accidents and the patents bought up from their estates by either Exxon or Shell?
No, the government is exactly the entity that should oversee censorship, because it's the only organization that's accountable to the voters
Think this through: what happens when they censor reports of censorship? Government is the ultimate monopoly more than any mere corporation could ever be. While it is technically possible to switch governments via either enough votes or armed rebellion, the both rely heavily on lack of censorship to effectively get the message out in order to be effective. No, censorship is an insidiously powerfull tool of government. Do not wish they have it.
This was the cause of the problem. Taste and smell are closely linked so that a strong smell will have an effect on your perception of taste. However, durians taste REALLY GOOD. So if you have the fortitude to take a large bite then it stops smelling so bad and you just have a delicious custard creme taste.
The hard part is getting people to take a large bite on faith. It's fun and informative to take a durian to a party and see when it really comes down to putting their mouth... er, where their mouth is, who of your friends really is adventurous and who just puts on airs.

you're probably being attacked by a tank or something? Don't you think you might have a hard time concentrating
Fear not; I'd make time to learn properly under those circumstances.
Actually, it was regarded as slashdot's best theme
And thanks to the omgponies firefox plugin, it's the only one I get.
So overall how much have the chinese spent on the 2008 summer olympics?
Around $2 billion, which is less than a week's trade imbalance with the US. So don't worry, they can afford it easily. Where were the last 10 things made that you bought recently?

As I recall she went in one side of a cloud bank and didn't come out the other side.

an outside panel to investigate its ethics ... I think I like him already
What do you know of this bill other than a summary in a newspaper article that you think it's a good idea to vote for it?
Here's the text of the thing.

what the hell is a "day" in the context of a formless void?
The clock angel's job was to count the seconds.

As much as I'd like to see a woman or a (excuse the wording) black man in the White House
How about a black man at 1 Observatory Circle? Methinks a strategic move along racial lines by McCain will be to call Gen. Powell about the VP slot.

I care about speed, anonymity and integrity of data.
If the data is anonymous, how do you verify its integrity?
