  1. Re:So what's new? on Business Software Needs A Revolution · · Score: 2, Insightful

With as much horse power that we have today, we should be able to create nearly bug free software because of all the majorly powerful development tools that put all this power to good use.

I don't see a correlation between speed and stability. More processing power doesn't mean you have less bugs. The amount of time it takes to code a quality program, takes the same amount of time with more power. That is, unless you're opinion of less-buggy software is just using an obnoxious level of try-catch statements :)

  2. A problem on Business Software Needs A Revolution · · Score: 3, Insightful

You see, one of the major problems is the cost of software. The more it costs, the more the suits want it. It's like having that uber-car with redicules horsepower that you will never be able to use because you live in the heart Chicago.

You wouldn't believe the number of times I've seen MySQL passed over for Oracle when none of the Oracle features will benefit the project.

And if you wanna argue about support, I think it's a non-issue. If you need help with Oracle, do you really think you're gonna get more help calling their customer support than you would doing a little google for info on MySQL? I think not.

Another problem is with sales of software. It's like for each new version, it is number one priority to have more bullet-points on the back of the box pointing out new features. How about one bullet point that just says "faster" and another that says "more stable." That'd tickle me just right. But I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Solution? It seems like marketing needs to change more than the actual software development. If the marketing groups were able to market stability/speed instead of the beaten-horse of new features, then we'd start to see a change in software quality.

  3. Not the end... at all... on Acclaim - GameCube Not Worth Publishing For? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Don't think that this spells the end, or the begining of the end, for the GameCube. The GameCube is kinda like a Mac in my opinion. It has a very defined nitche, but it is still very profitable. Many people are addicted to it. Just like you can only run OSX on a Mac (at a resonable speed), you can only play Nintendo's games on GCN.

I will always buy Nintendo systems as long as the big N is creating super-high quality games for their systems. I own all three systems, and somehow I end up playing GameCube the most. I guess I'm still addicted to the ZMM (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc.) universes.

I'm anxious to see how Nintendo changes their direction with their next-gen console to solve some of these problems. These are tough times, and three consoles creates a saturated market.

  5. A query... on Microsoft On Japan Xbox Woes, Sega Non-Merger · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why is it necessary to penetrate both US and Japaneese markets? There are some products that simply don't work in both markets, and they do fine.

Example. Hamburgers do not sell well in India. Also, you'll not find many restaurants selling cat here in the states.

Is it simply not possible to make money hyper-focusing on one market instead of two? Am I missing something? It seems that Microsoft has been awfully amitious in penetrating the US market, much less going for the Japaneese market as well. Perhaps they should consider the Xbox 1 as a US only device, and stop waisting time and money on the Japaneese market...

How is this in any way inappropriate? Believe it or not, but the ability to develop for a console without an SDK is a good thing. Plus, I OWN the hardware, I can do with it what I want as long as I don't take someone elses software illegally. These guys aren't selling any illegal software, or hardware. There's nothing wrong with it.

  7. What to take, what not to take on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 1

If you have ADHD, as I do, I've found that (suprisingly) caffine helps to slow me down. Yes. Caffine. Coffee is what you want tho, not something with sugar. Sugar definitely enhances the effects of ADHD.

Another suggestion, this time about medication, is what to take... and what not to. Before you go for the generic Ritalin, try Cylert. I found it to be side effect free which is diffinitely a good thing. Whatever you take, DO NOT take Adderall!! It is bad! It is highly addictive, kills your heart like cocain, and in my opinion creates more problems that it solves.

    I hope that helps.

No, it's definitely Rogue Squadron III, or at least that's what I read. Pilotwings is more than flying planes, there's jetpack and stuff like that. I guess that's where some of the 3rd person stuff came in. Maybe we'll see the ability to switch vehicles in GCN Pilotwings!

I've also read, but cannot find the link, that Rogue Squadron III actually started out as a technology demo to show Nintendo what they were capable of.

Anyway, there's two great games to look forward to for us Gamecube owners.

I think a good answer would be to first point out that non-real-time rendering is not yet optimal. Before something goes real-time (for making movies) we'd have to be able to generate 100% photo-realistic imagry. Only then can/should we worry about making that process real-time.

I'd imagine we're some years, or decades, away from that.

Why do something in real-time, giving you so-so quality, when the audience expects top of the line cgi that pushes computers to their limits even though the rendering time is still staggering.

  14. Bad idea but... on Sun Pushes Java For Games Market · · Score: 1

This seems like a really bad idea. I mean... Java is slow, let's admit it. And it has never been the "write once run everywhere" language that it was cracked up to be.

Games today already require serious power. Why would a developer choose to slow it down even further by adding the heavy-weight Java on top? (Or, I guess, on the bottom.)

However, I do have one counter-point to my own argument. A few years ago a really kickass game came out that I (and many others) really enjoyed. It wasn't until I had beaten the game and was looking around in it's directory that I noticed that it was written in java.

Can you guess what game that was?... Vampire: Masquerade. How they got it to run so nicely with Java is beyond me, unless only small parts were in java somehow. Anyone know for sure?

  18. Games... on Sony To Release PSP Handheld Console In 2004 · · Score: 3, Interesting

I wonder what companies they will team with to create new games. In order to beat Nintendo, they're really gonna need an awesome initial lineup of games. I'm thinking at least 25 or so. And they'll need some big named games as well, like Castlevania and whatnot.

Also, what are they going to do to entice developers. Gameboy has such market penetration that it'll be hard to convince them that they can make more money with the new handheld. I expect to see a lot of games developed for both systems, or 3d ports of games for the PSP.
