Mandrake has made such great strides in bringing the Linux desktop to the masses, this little bump will be trod over quickly enough. Heck I've downloaded my 2 cd set and I must say, that I'm planning on buying the bigger version when it's in the stores. (That way I get viavoice and all the other goodies).
I agree. I've used Mandrake since 7 and it has gotten better and better. Right now the usability is on par with win98 (or better). Last night I had 3d graphics working and was doing some serious development (3d wise). Totally cool! It's also fast. The biggest difference that I notice between Linux and Windows, is the time to load the programs. Once they are loaded they seem as fast or faster then their windows counterparts. (I develop using Kylix on Linux and Delphi on windows and they two products are very close to each other).
if this bill succeeds. I'm a Canadian so my comments to the senetor would mean less then zero. But consider all the new development that happens in the US. Then consider what the bill would force as an additional development that must happen for the software/hardware to be released. This alone would cause the cost of development to increase, (and thus reduce the amount of development done). Not to mention the obvious First Ammendment abuse.
The old games were innovative and interesting. Newer games are (for the most part) just remakes of older games. (Diablo II is a much enhanced version of Wizardry, which I saw first on an Apple 2). So why not port the old great games to Linux. Quite often the older games were more fun then newer games are now. I'm sick of twitch games, with fancy 3d graphics.Bring on some games that rely more on game play and less on graphics!
Why does my computer run slower now then it did in 2001? because it's busy accessing GlibGlob.com to see if it's legal for me to run this software show this movie, listen to these sounds, etc.
Is it just me or is the US leading the world into the technolgy dark ages?
Airport security is usually hired out to companies which hire "security" guards at minimum wage. The turnover rate is very high, most people don't last more then 2 months. I'm guessing that they aren't going to be that accurate at identifying terrorists or anyone else walking by them.
Even if false positives are found, at least it would be better then false negitives...
I knew someone who was in the business of selling software. He business revolved around the idea that you could try out the software (for a small charge) first. If you liked it, then you paid for it. If you didn't like it, you took it back to the store and it was put put back on the shelf at a discounted price. Eventually the price was discounted to the point where someone would buy it. The Software Publishers Association went after his little store and 3 others that were doing similar things, in order to establish case law. They of course went out of business because of all this, and the end result was that less software was sold.
This is in Canada, but the actions occurred because of bi-lateral trade agreements, that said something to the effect that software could not be rented (presumably because people are too dishonest to remove it from their systems when they were done with it.)
Personally, (and I write software for a living) I though it was a great way to increase sales. I think people who took it back wouldn't have bought the software in the first place, so those sales wouldn't have taken place in the first place. He was moving product, where other stores weren't.
It's things like this that make me think that capitalism is dead for the little guys in the world.
I can spend my time computing instead of re-configuring! I find that with other distro's I end up fiddling about trying this and that until I get things to be a way I want. With this distro it's much faster to do the same and get that job out of the way!
Things like the network set up and sharing the network with others on the lan make this a winner. I used to set this up by hand, now I basically push a couple of buttons. Also Menu configuration has never been easier. I can use multiple desktops, including blackbox and enlightnment, as well as the standard kde and gnome.
If the government bans crypto export (again) then history will repeat itself and the worlds crypto experts will be in Russia and other countries which don't ban it. After all why would you spend your precious time working on something only to have the government restrict how you distribute it. Esp. in research areas.

Why would the US cripple itself at a time like this!
You have to remember that the goal of the terrorist is to terrorize. If you are thinking of re-writing laws, spending tons of money on security, checkpoints etc. Then they have won. I believe that in this sense they have.
They like it when people react to them. They have a sense of power over people who are angry or afraid of them. This feeds into their strange sense of justice.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but I believe we have to keep this in mind as we explore the possiblities. That is, are we just fanning the flames by doing so.
I'm not advocating forgive and forget by any means. I'm saying learn where the buttons are, and how to use them!
are also interesting. Any games which used 3d graphics would freeze totaly after some random period of time. this went on for months. Finally a tech guy suggested I check the heat sinks, there might be a gap between the heat sink an the card or cpu.
Well there was a gap alright. The heat sink had fallen off and was lying on the card beneath it.
After applying heat transfer goop and bolting it back on, things have been running well.
This has been true in every war the US has been in. So why not recognize this as a need, but not a want. So while the war is raging, the rules are changed, but as soon as the war is declared to be over, we are back to the freedoms we love.
The only problem with this, is determining when a war such as this is over.
Thanks slashdot for the fantastic work you have done over the last 2 days. When other services have been down or out, you have been able to fill us in and have provided a forum for people to use, and provide links to working news sources.
This isn't news for nerds exclusivly but it was well worth the exception.
Your paragraph about getting his answering machine until 11, then it was out of service, really struck home with me. (Actually brought a tear to my eye).
I've heard that psycologists are meeting kids from school buses, because their parents won't be.
It's great value for the money.

Your project sounds more interesting then MOJO, do you have a site showing it off?

or is Jamie Love sounding really bummed out? Like he's doing his best, but not getting anywhere and now it's a trudge job.
Is it just me or is the US leading the world into the technolgy dark ages?
Ok,I guess it's still not that clear.
ahem, (clears throat)
JUST SAY NO!

I for one am glad to see the word used correctly.

Imagine a Beowulf of these :)
I agree with the sentiment, however with the timing, I think there will be problems for you.

Hacking means playing with, not subversing. You must be a reporter to have gotten it soo wrong.
End of story.

I heard on the radio this morning, that the passengers on the Pittsburgh flight knew they were going to die, and decided to die on their own terms.
In my mind they are true heros.

This is too sad.
