Salesman: Yea right try getting a job as a salesman and not using a networked computer. What would this person be selling.
Mechanic: By a strict defination any new car has several networked computers in it. Also part ordering and tracking are all done on networked computers.
Writer: I don't know if you mean creative or other but either way it does not matter. With very few expections all writers produce on computers and if you are working in an office they are not going to go to the trouble of taking you off the network and making sure you stay off.
Musician: Yea right.
Doctor: Most of the systems that most of the Doctor offices I have ever been in are very networked.
Sailor: Maybe merchant marine but in the Navy everyone uses computers that are on networks.
Nurse: A large part of their job is putting patient info into and getting it out of networked systems.
Photographer: Everyone uses photoshop and the internet.
Waiter: In many places they send your order to the other staff with you guessed it a network.
Retail salesperson: You clearly have no clue how a POS works.
Lawyer: Yea good luck.
Policeman: What do you think the laptops are in their cars for.
Teacher: Yea right.
Astronomer: Almost all astronomy these days is done over networks They where very early adopters.
Soldier: Hell it was in the military that I first started learning networking. Even the fucking bravos need them these days.
Configure networks. If computers were to disappear or I was told I could not touch them I and my family would be in the street.
Granted I'm a tech worker but many if not most jobs much above the poverty line at least require you to use a networked computer for at least some part of the day.
Just so you know I had to go with cable where I'm at (I really wanted speakeasy) so just a couple of suggestions. You might try speakeasy. They are *really* good from what I've been told. Also if cable is in your area they provide DHCP but I've had the same address for ~3 months now and the tech who installed told me that they basically have leases that last for so long that unless you are offline for a really long time you will almost never lose the address.
I see that you have worked with/for PTC.:) Yes they and some of the other high end software vendors due many things right. But of course keeping the license servers locally would actually require work and therefore MS will never ever do it.
and this will finally allow me to kill my Wife's Win 2k partition. She likes to watch Korean broadcasts on line. In any case if you are using Debian see this
Here where I work in the time I've been here Mozilla has gone from not used to, thanks in part to me, almost %100 usage. And this is a rather large place.
Being a security guy myself. I don't think most of this comes from real security people. I think most of it comes from lay people who don't really understand the concepts. So don't paint us all with the same brush. BTW you are pretty much right.
But how do you use a GUI client over an SSH tunnel when you are on a low bandwidth connection? The point is pick a tool that is right for the job and for *many* of us that means a CLI mail client.
Damned straight. I love my mutt. The one big reason is that I can SSH to my box from anywhere and get my mail. Mutt does in fact rule and it is also free as in speech.:)
In most cases that I have been able to verify for myself yes yes it is. Most companies use one OS throughout. I would be very suprised if they had the website on Windows and the server farms on a Unix.
No no you are not in fact if anything this proves that you are just smart. In any case let me tell you a little story about paranoia they thought I was paranoid when we decided to bolock ActiveX. Then you get a thing like this mornings shiny new MS hole that proves me %100 right. Never ever ever trust anything really important to someone that runs MS.
Why would you want a GUI first CLI later? Just seems stupid to me. But then again I spend most of my life on routers, switches, and various Linux and HPUX boxes. But seems to me that a GUI is simply much faster and more flexable to do real work. Keep in mind the paper was talking about servers and not desktops.
Back when MS first bought Hotmail I happned to know a FreeBSD dev through a LUG. According to him, and he certainly should have known, when MS first bought Hotmail they started looking at moving the servers to Windows and to a man Hotmail admins and coders threatned to quit. This most likely came out of that.
What about them see my other post about wacky stuff in the US. The thing that cracks me up is that people get all up in arms over this. The simple fact is that Hindus worship cows. Nothing wrong with that nothing wrong with anyone worshiping what they want as long as they don't hurt others. BTW do a google on Gahndi and cow-protection and you will see that there are many Hindu sites out there quoting Gahndi saying that they do worship cows and that is is a religous thing. Go reread my first post there was nothing negative about it. Yes some of the google hits where to Islamic websites and yes upon reading them some of there comment was not so good. So I will post the following.

Now deny that. Once more since this seems hard for some of you to swallow I don't care what Hindus worship and in fact find it odd that soo many of you seem offended at a simple statement of facts.
And if you did not like that other link try this one. Note I can not speak for the first poster but I'm not saying there is anything wrong with cow worship and it is in my mind no more wacky than much of what the western world worships but the facts are that they do in fact worship cows and it is not some mother thing.

And so forth for almost everything you listed.

I hate myself for knowing this but there was also a I Love Lucy episode with a car phone.
And odds are since they own ICQ that they are at least in part basing this off of that. See here for more dates. http://www.icq.com/company/about.html

An HR app that we used at work died. As did a couple of banking sites that I use.

No it was almost certainly this over the next few days and weeks I have a feeling we will see many more of these kinds of things.
Also see this.
So no it is not criminal it was a screw up at MS.
