  1. Re:Obligatory. on TV Viewing Linked to Attention Problems · · Score: 4, Insightful

It has NOTHING to do with the skills of teachers. It's a problem with our expectations of what our educational system should provide, and a dearth of parental influence. Somewhere along the line, we decided that introducing Algebra and the history of Pre-Columbian Meso-American fishing cultures to third graders was a wonderful idea, and that we needed to test for every piece of trivia that any expert thought our 10th graders should know. Meanwhile, mommy and daddy both work until 6:30 pm, and barely have time to check if the kids have finished their 4 hours of homework per night.

When my son finishes high school, I want him to be self-sufficient. That means being capable of researching any topic, writing a concise summary of what he's found out and advocating his own opinion on the subject. That means balancing a checkbook and calculating how much wood he'll need to build fence. That means being able to reason his way through a natural disaster, and walk 5 miles to the nearest gas station when his car breaks down. That also means controlling his own emotions well enough to smile and wave at road-ragers. The rest, I am confident, he will get from my wife and I, and fill in for himself, based upon natural human curiosity and ambition.

Let's get the trivial pursuit tests out of our schools and give our kids the chance to take responsibility for their own future. America's aptly titled "greatest generation" grew up in the depression helping their families make ends meet, and their kids grew up on howdy-doody, and took us to the moon with slide rules. We're not going to get back to that by cramming more powerpoint presentations and multiple choice tests down our kids' throats. We're going to get back there by restoring single paycheck families and giving families the time to do something BESIDES watch TV for an hour before bedtime.

I don't think there's as much distance between our views as your post suggests. I would heartily agree with you that there is waste in health care spending. That doesn't mean the answer is cutting funding, however. Unfortunately, cuts DO affect EMS first, and America's EMS system is so near collapse that if it were a single company, it would have long ago filed bankruptcy and dissolved. Corporations will still take their profits. Doctors will still need to be highly paid to attract quality candidates. Higher paid than similarly educated, though? I think you'd need to document that. You rightfully suggest that there are alternatives to all or nothing. Unfortunately, you follow that by framing the question as medical care spending or every other field of study. That's also a false set of choices. Thanks for sharing your view with me.

  3. Re:Charge it! on NASA Weighs Moon Plans · · Score: 1, Offtopic

If you think health care system spending is too high, you are probably under the mistaken idea that it's all for other people, and you'll never need to use the system yourself. I don't think you'll find anyone (sane) in an emergency room that wants to sign your petition endorsing less public spending on health care. Feel free to do your part, though, by putting DNR instructions in your wallet. Medical care and the military have a lot in common, they are only appreciated and supported when we need them RIGHT NOW, and then it's usually too late to add resources.

Head out to a rural town just big enough to have a walmart that DOES NOT have a college of any sort nearby, and arrive a few hours (2-3 is plenty) before the ticket handout. You won't have a problem. You might drive a little farther to do this, but it's a lit more comfortable to drive a few hours out of town, then to sit in a lawnchair for 3 days. I have a lot of respect for Steve Wozniak. I don't begrudge the guy a joke or two, but when you are writing up a review for publication, heroin-cultivation seems a bit beyond the pale, even if you want to just let the pot issue slide on the assumption he's from a different era.
