Yes, we all agree that is why it is illegal. However, what the poster above was saying is that is the university's responsibility and not Microsoft's. This is true, the institution to which the FOI law applies to this case is the university. And before you suspect an overarching conspiracy, realize that Microsoft just wants more bargining power with other universities. They don't want other institutions to be able to say, "Well, you gave $SU a lower price, why can't you give us this deal?"

Sure, the RIAA and MPAA and their buddies in the government have tried to apply the DMCA to every aspect of life, but if you look at how it is being enforced, versus how it could be enforced it really isn't that bad. Afterall, they could break your door down, tear gas your dog, spray you in the face with pepper spray then push you down the stairs for DMCA violation...or at least that's what they told me.

What the parent poster means is that the current athlon/pentium chips don't do very well in mobile applications (more of a matter of opinion than fact, but I agree). Just because I call something 'mobile', doesn't mean it is actually suitable for moving. For example, if I called the great wall of china "Great Wall of China Mobile" or "Great Wall of China M", it wouldn't make it anymore more feasible or useful to move it around.

What does it matter if a microsoft group says the DOD shouldn't use open source software. The DOD will continue to use whatever gets the job done. They are capable enough to make their own decisions, and I'm sure they can see the motive behind a microsoft backed group pushing against open source. So, this is really a non-issue.

This isn't really feasible if you are trying to extract the data losslessly. The original image file will not match with the extracted file. There is loss in the printing (ink smudge, low resolution printer), loss in the photography (ambient light, noise on the film, thumb in front of lens) and loss in the scanning process. As a result, even if the scanned image is in the same format as the original, there is still loss.

As other have pointed out, the car is taxed at multiple stages of production (or rather the company that makes the car). Additionally, the 6% you quote is only the sales tax. There are luxury taxes (which suprisingly apply to many vehicles you wouldn't consider luxurious) and excise taxes. Additionally, you can expect, in many states to pay property taxes on the car. If someone buys a car for you, both you and them have to pay a gift tax (if the value is over $10,000 I believe).
