The first thing I did was check to see the one that I administer (at the corner of Bay & Elm Streets). I work in a little Mac Store here, and one of the services we provide to our customers (and everyone else) is free wireless access. I should probably WEP my network, and at least have them ask for the password to log in... but I'm just too lazy. We're open 'till midnight on weekdays, so I might get around to it tonight. If you're in the area, drop by and ask for Daniel... If you tell me you saw my posting on /. um... I'll give you a free Ambrosia SW CD. Otherwise... free AirPort access until I secure it.

Now, every once in a while I get asked this question: how is it that a VCR can record a TV show when the TV isn't turned on? Yeah, I can hear the snickers. But I get this from a lot of basically intelligent people. And the frustrating thing is, I've never found an explanation that makes sense to the asker. To me it's obvious, "You see, there's two tuners, the TV has one, the VCR has one...." But the eyes just glaze over.

Why not just point to the cable coming out of the wall and say "see that? Thats where the TV signal goes into the VCR..."

I have to disagree with you there. Creating and inventing are inherently different. If I create an Apple Pie (by mixing the ingredients together & putting it in the oven) that is very different from inventing Apple Pie, which only one person ever did. The same with the Internet. As a Senator, Gore pushed the legislation that mixed together the ingredients that made the internet, and put them in the oven. (and by the time that oven timer dinged, he was already Veep, and didn't have much say in it anymore. (BTW, anyone else, feel free to use and refine this metaphor I just came up with.)
