  1. Underinvesting and oversubscribing on Net Neutrality Debate Crosses the Atlantic · · Score: 2, Informative

Here in NZ we have a similar, but significantly different issue.

We have an incumbent bandwidth provider with a Govt-sanctioned monopoly. Add in overseas shareholders & the focus for the last 10 years has been on profit over investment. We have pathetic internet connections - average users are on plain ADSL, with a real downstream speed of 2-3Mbs. Recently they had to cancel a connection plan as they had oversubscribed it so badly that they were hardly able to provide speeds faster than dialup.

Recently, to "reduce costs" the telco pulled peering with the major IPXs in NZ, and now charge boatloads for ISPs to buy an ATM connection back to their network. Yes, ATM.

It all boils down to a lack of investment to maximise profits. ISPs in NZ & the UK have been underinvesting and oversubscribing to make the most of what they have. When they finally wake up & realise that they can't provide the service they said they can, they panic & start looking elsewhere to get the money they need to pay for the upgrades they should've done/started years ago.

In NZ, the money is coming from other ISPs, Govt & raping the customer. In the UK, ISPs want it from large content providers.

A better solution would be for the iPlayer to detect a slow connection and then pop up a notice saying something about a slow connection and to check if their ISP is interfering with the connection (or if they just have a slow connection). Kinda like how MSN does when sending files thru a firewall.

Hey all, I just wanted to explain what some of you have been noticing around some stories that have been submitted to Digg on the HD DVD encryption key being cracked. This has all come up in the past 24 hours, mostly connected to the HD-DVD hack that has been circulating online, having been posted to Digg as well as numerous other popular news and information websites. We've been notified by the owners of this intellectual property that they believe the posting of the encryption key infringes their intellectual property rights. In order to respect these rights and to comply with the law, we have removed postings of the key that have been brought to our attention. Whether you agree or disagree with the policies of the intellectual property holders and consortiums, in order for Digg to survive, it must abide by the law. Digg's Terms of Use, and the terms of use of most popular sites, are required by law to include policies against the infringement of intellectual property. This helps protect Digg from claims of infringement and being shut down due to the posting of infringing material by others. Our goal is always to maintain a purely democratic system for the submission and sharing of information - and we want Digg to continue to be a great resource for finding the best content. However, in order for that to happen, we all need to work together to protect Digg from exposure to lawsuits that could very quickly shut us down. Thanks for your understanding, Jay

Well, I've read the NYT article and thought it was interesting. I've read the replies by thedeacon on AO Forums. I've read the replies on /.

I gotta say, the article was interesting, showed me what some ppl get out of MMORPGs. I didn't think it was negative from reading it. I do see how it could be negative in light of the replies by thedeacon in AO forums.

But how constructive is it to diss the ppl who read /.? I mean, as much as the ppl who play MMORPGs would hate being stereotyped, thedeacon seems not to mind throwing all of the /. readers into the same barrel.

Apparently none of us have ever had sex, we're lame, have no lives, and get off on Linux and kernels. Oh & posting in HTML is geeky.

As thedeacon should know, any large group of ppl with different backgrounds from different places with a common interest are NOT identical. Just as not all MMORPG players are addicted & socially inept, not all /. readers are geeky & get their loads off over Linux.

thedeacon's replies on AO Forum were relatively elloquent, and written well. Full of anger & frustration, sure, but all in all nicely done. Better than the NYT article almost. But on /. all it is is flaming and abuse.

If thedeacon is trying to show he's a bigger man than the person who wrote the article, he sure failed. All he want's to do is threaten and abuse ppl. God, get over it. Physical threats are lame... the pen is mightier than the sword after all. I'm sure if thedeacon is as intelligent as he claims to be he could be more constructive.

Oh, wait, I forgot... this is /. after all.
