There's some professor of medical ethics from UPenn that always shows up as a pundit on news shows about this kind of thing. I heard him on NPR sometime about two weeks ago, and he predicted that exactly this would happen.

Someone would announce that they had cloned a child, and then not give enough evidence for the world to verify the claims. They would act as if they were protecting the child and the family from the ravenous world media. Which would be true. He'd get to look like a hero. He'd get to be all over the news. A quick look shows that they've got more than headlines in Canada.

Of course, this being a cult, it might be more like the Scientologists when they had their first "clear". They might believe themselves too much, and allow world media access to the clone/clear and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is not a clone/perfect human being/whatever.

Alvin Toffler said, in a wired interview in issue 2.01:

I once had a class of 15-year-old high school kids and I gave them index cards, and I said, "Write down seven things that will happen in the future." They said there would be revolutions and presidents would be assassinated, and we would all drown in ecological sludge. A very dramatic series of events. But I noticed that of the 198 items that they handed in, only six used the word "I." So I gave them another set of cards, and I said, "Now I want you to write down seven things that are going to happen to you." Back came, "I will be married when I'm 21," "I will live in the same neighborhood, I will have a dog."

Alvin's predictions have always been either uninteresting or ludicrous, imho. However, this point is *so* fantastic.

Sure, in 47 years we might have nanotech that can create turkeys. But we might also have nanotech that has turned every human into a turkey. Christmas day will be the least interesting distinction between now and 2050. Ok, now I'll go read the article.

I've never seen a touchscreen that could detect multiple simultaneous touches in a reconfigurable manner.

So, sure, you could have an onscreen keyboard. But you couldn't hold the shift key while you pressed another key. And you couldn't rest your fingers anywhere on the screen. There are touchscreen keyboards, but they divide up the surface into a million individual touchscreens, and none of those touchscreens can move.

You know the touchscreen scrollwheels on some PC laptops? Those are implemented in hardware. If I understand correctly, there can be no shareware app that does that for a generic touchpad.

It's got most of the features I desire. It's much faster than other clients, but I can't tell if it does swarm downloading. Since most of the users seem to rip their own full albums, swarm downloading might be difficult anyway.

It also has a really interesting business model. If you "donate" $5 per month to SoulSeek, you get to skip to the front of queues. It makes it very tempting to give them money, but it doesn't threaten to kill the community by closing it to non-paying users.

    Boy, do I disagree.

If, for example, you've got a laptop, and have needs for both Windows and Linux, a perfect virtual machine environment is absolutely desireable. You can take your laptop anywhere, and simultaneously run apps of different varieties.

I've got an iBook. I'd never have considered switching to Linux without MacOnLinux. With proper virtual machine design, and a native processor, there's no crippling speed penalty either. Even if I had $1200 for another iBook. I've got both right here.

Even with desktop machines, if you've spend $1500 on your primary system, WindowsXP on a virtual machine is going to be a hell of a lot faster than a new $250 machine.

Oh. Wait. You said emulation. In that case, I couldn't agree more strongly. I just don't know of any $250 processor emulation packages. VMWare is just a virtual machine, right?

Some local foundation for police benefits was calling around asking for donations. Since they're a nonprofit, and perhaps government linked, they've got all kinds of special legal leeway with telemarketting. I think.

They called me four fucking times in two days:

"In these troubling times, do you feel that it's important to give our police officers all the support they need?"
"Uh. I guess. Could you please put me on your do not call list?"
    "Oh. Sure."
    "Thanks."
    [click]

The next day, I got an identical call (different voice every time). Ten minutes later, another guy called.

"I've asked you to put me on your do not call list twice already. How come you keep calling me?"
"I'm sorry sir, I see you as a new number on my computer."
"Well, I'm not. Is there something you can do about this? Clearly something is the matter with your computer system."
"Well, I'll mark your number this time."
    "Thanks, But I'd..."
    [click] (cut off)

Then, a half an hour later, I got another new voice. I interrupted him in middle of his pitch:

"I'm sorry, this is the fourth time someone has called me for your fundraiser, and every single time I've told them to put me on the do not call list. I understand that your computer says that I'm a new number, but it's wrong. At this point, I'm concerned that you're operating your fundraiser in violation of FCC regulation..." (cut off)

"Well. I can see why they didn't put your name on the no call list, asshole." [click]

There were no more calls, though. I think the fundraiser ended. All the voices were men, so I guess it was off duty cops that were doing the calling. That would explain the attitude. I swear, I was perfectly polite with every single call. Until the last one, I guess. Thugs.
