  2. Intresting stuff! on Mythic Launches Warhammer Online · · Score: 1

I actually just got off the WoW treadmill after nearly 4 years. Had nothing to do with WAR but I just finally was like I'm done with this.

And an interesting reason why is because off...PvP! You see I actually played WoW for mostly it's PvE aspect. I mean the PvP in WoW was OK but having been someone who PvPed in RTS games mostly it's balance was always so laughable I never took it seriously. I mean at the end of 1.x I was in a Naxx level guild and could go PvP with my geared to the 9's Shaman, and all my geared up buddys, and just destroy other people. Let's not get into class balance.

So enter 2.0 and the Arenas and what it did to the PvP, and eventual PvE, part of the game. Now a whole new level of gear imbalance was introduced with class balance being put under a huge microscope. Because no matter how you slice it the classes were never originally designed to be balanced for dueling in a box. So on such a small scale, like the 2v2 bracket, it was just a joke. I was rolling with now a Feral Druid main and it was a freaking daily thing to watch the "amg damn OP Druids" crap start up. Rare was it that they would qualify that it was not my spec that was the problem.

But even worse was the sense of entitlement that 'our new PvPing overlords' felt about class balance. Because they were PvPing it was 'game breaking slaps to the face' when their ideas about balance were not addressed. Never mind how what they might propose would do to the PvE aspect of the game. "This game is not about PvE anymore," was an oft quoted phrase.

I could go on here but I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think it's cool that WAR has been designed from the ground up with PvP (sounds more like RvR to me but what do I know) in mind. But I don't think they understand part of the appeal of WoW's PvP system. That it currently is imbalanced and people like that. Want to pwn? Level up the latest FOTM and faceroll to victory. It's not really as easy as all that but close enough that it's been working pretty good to keep those who think WoW has always had some sort of PvP background happy just because it had the word war in it's title.

I will thou admit that every time I post something like this I normally kinda /facepalm at the idea that there is impending doom for PC gaming but the consoles are, finally, kinda taking over single player games.

Thanks in no small part that DRM on PC games, especially ports, is a nightmare. I recently picked up Mass Effect and it's just awful. Well, the game itself is great but it crashes non-stop. Lots of people try to say it's hardware related but that's a load of bull. When you have a port that has a pretty hardcore DRM system on it it's not hard to figure out why it's crashing so much.

BioWare of course has remained pretty mute on the subject. No real surprise to me but they are losing a lot of good will from PC gamers. How that fact will impact their, and other more stand-alone style PC games, will be interesting. Seeing as how it's more common now to see such games designed 1st for the console then ported to PC rather than how it used to be; the other way around.

I still think that the often cried demise of PC gaming is much exaggerated. However as I said I do concede that consoles, in no small part due to DRM type issues, are making their presence felt.

Not for what you get. A console does not provide any real functionality outside of being a DVD player. PCs offer a very high level of functionality outside of gaming.

    2) you frequently have driver and other compatibility problems
I am never sure what prompts people to say this. I've not had any sort of driver and or compatibility problems for years now. Are there some people that are still running MS DOS and trying to game out there?

    3) a number of PC games are launched in a rather buggy state
Ok, this is a fair point. But thanks to the fact that they are PC games vs console games they are typically patched up quickly if they are a game of any real note.

    4) the overall performance level of consoles has improved a lot in the latest generation
Huh? They always improve, when was the last time that consoles did not improve when they were bumped up a gen. Not even sure what your tying to say here. It's not like PCs hardware is standing still either.

MMORPGs are not really RPGs in much the same way that driving a car simulator is not the same as actually driving a car. A lot of the elements are present in the simulator but a large number are still missing.

This is not to say that MMORPGs aren't fun or don't have a place, but the more I've played WoW the more I find myself not really playing a RPG but more of an RPG simulator. Sure at times it feels like I'm playing an RPG but then I go and play something like Gothic, a good NWN module, etc and I'm reminded of all the elements I'm missing in that MMO.

For the record, yeah I cut my teeth back in the day on PnP AD&D, Carwars, Star Frontiers, along with a number of others. I won't even deny that a PnP RPG is the "true" RPG vs a CRPG but for me the convenience factor of being able to play around my schedule is key.

In closing I just wanted to put this out there since it was on my mind and this thread seemed as good a place as any. WoW bashing and it's flaws has it's place but that is not what I'm going for here, rather just wanted to make the observation that there is a hierarchy of RPG elements among the types.
