You don't, programming is a boring and tedious task, too many people glorify it as some sort of end all nerdskill, but its just as useful as knowing anything else really. Why not teach your kid how to use Maya or Blender, sometimes people that aren't into technical things are into creative things. The only real compelling notion of programming is video game programming, and because it is so complicated and difficult to do successfully, many people never even venture to that level.

  17. I still don't see the significance... or do I? on iPad Progress Report · · Score: 1

There are already better tablet devices in existence that are more functional and support more types of activity, but why so much attention has been centered on the ipad, i can only assume it is apple hype, generated by its market - casual electronics users. I mean, if I really wanted to, I could pick up a tablet pc, throw linux on it, and sit in an airport terminal streaming shoutcast stations and write a paper about the benefits of having a portable computer, while browsing /. on a cellular or wifi network. I guess the real value in the ipad is that all the hardware and peripherals required that would allow me to do such tasks in the last paragraph are consolidated and compacted into a single device, so the value is not just for the consumer but for the future of portable computing, as this will set a standard for other tablet companies to make such commodities as easy and refined to use (with the proprietariness that Apple forces upon us of course). I'm not implying that arbitrary hype and buying a product purely because of its brand is a good thing, but this situation to me is at least shaping up to be beneficial for the entire concept of a computer.

  18. Re:Piracy on Game Devs On the Future of PC Gaming · · Score: 1

Because you are still trying to get your $60 from the consumer when today's fps' only have some 6-8 hours of gameplay. Therefore the developer is only garanteed to make $15 for the first month that the player takes to beat the campaign and then they hope that they don't get bored with multiplayer. The question in mind is how can developers still make money with first person shooters on PC while protecting that income from piracy, but also not butt-fucking the player with DRM for wanting to play a game on PC.

  19. Re:Piracy on Game Devs On the Future of PC Gaming · · Score: 2, Interesting

So essentially this would require developers to go out on a limb and almost invent a new type of online experience, we have our mmorpgs, and we have our first person shooters. The mmo is protected by subscriptions, where the first person shooter is not, obviously you can't charge people a monthly fee to play a first person shooter in its current format, but why not instead take the campaign content and put it in an online mmo format, then charge a flat fee for the game as well as a subscription. There aren't many games like this, although a more recent one such as Global Agenda comes to mind. I really can't say that the pirating is not happening, because it is, even games that require steam have been cracked for people to play the campaign content for free. I think the best commonground solution would be to tell your story in an online world, similar to how guild wars handled story progression and massively multiplayer features, then require a subscription, because it then becomes a point where buying the software is irrelevant, and its all about a subscription, add more content through patches, and you have a steady userbase.

The more annoying people make advertising the more intensive scripts will be made to ignore them, advertising companies and content creators need to realize that the popup add and sidebanners are becoming more and more obsolete in this day, people will not be buying random bullshit that they see in an ad on their internet browser, especially in this economy. The consumer knows what they want, and they will use the correct resources to make these purchases when the time comes (Google, Newegg, Amazon, etc). Ad companies need to realize that they are in an obsolete business and need to either adapt or die.
