everytime i hear DOW mentioned in this discussion it reminds me of how people can talk about something with almost no facts and jump to conclusions. The disaster was in 1984 at a union carbide plant. In 2001 DOW bough union carbide. Now, how is DOW to blame here?
here is a link with a recent article
the disaster is believed to be the result of sabotage. Also, union carbide claned up most of the site and it is now in the hands of the Indian gov. In addition they paid hundreds of millions in compensation but almost all of it was lost in the government and the victims got nothing. There are far to many sides to blame. To call the story above wrong would be a gross understatement.
anyone else remeber the power glove.. it was sooo bad.. hah. FF was hardly a bad movie. It had some CG isues but certainly was not a dumb movie. The wizard was an Ad for Mario 3.
the only thing religious about the CSM is that it has a single article that is christian oriented. It is published out of boston and I like to think of them in the same way as all those jesuit schools that have free/cheap quality private school education all over asia (including the one that i went to) especially in places others whould not go to.
I'm sure there are people who will mock religion, but nothing is going to diminish the respect i have for the people like those who gave up personal fortunes, moved to third world countries and taught english, science and math (yes including evolution). One father at ST Xavier's in Kathmandu, Nepal was billionare in the US before he gave it all up.
but kde usually lacks thir party software support like office. I know koffice is ok and open office is quite good, but in both cases, it either lack functionality or has a distinctly differnt ui experience. In addition you usually end up using stuff like evolution or gaim which are great apps, but suffer from the UI problem. It is not a problem for me personally, but i know users who get scared of that stuff.
you mean like using ctrl-click on a mac... think about how often you need to right click on a mac and you will know why there i no real need for another button
i actually saw open office sold for 39.99 in a box at apple stores. The screenshots make it look hideous even more so because it is placed next to MS Office which integrates very nicely
when we talk about desktop, we mean for people who do not have an interest in those things. That is what i mean at least. I can tell you this, synaptic would scare eh shit out of most of my non techie friends.
no, it really is that simple. The entire application is contained in the.app "file" it is really a direcotry that carries the binary and all of the files that it needs.
if linux is to be truly ready for the desktop we need a syatem like in OSX. Something that is as intiitive and simple as dragging an icon to the applications folder to install and then dragging it to the trash to uninstall. That should be it. I know there are arguments against this apprach from geeks who talk about the waste in having redundnat libaries, but this is not intenedeed for geeks it is for people who want software to just work.
well in the case of china and india it has little to do with science and more to do with antionla pride. dont assume otherwise. both of these nations feel they have something to prove.
ever hear of jason blair and his supervisors? that and boston globe which is the local division of NYT had a hand in the forged bush national guard memo story.

Take with a grain of salt. I say this not becasue I disagree with the accusations but becasue the NYT has a tendency to editoralize or fabricate news.
you know, part of the reason people post things like that here is becasue of the mature intelligent discussion that takes place on slashdot. If you ever went to a specalized or moderated newsgroup and posted a similar question you would never get help. Instead all you would get is angry 13 yearolds in their mother's basement or wrong answers. It is the fact that a specialized newsgroup full of knowledgable folks, developers and regualr users is no use that people post on slashdot for help. I expect intelligent and thought provoking replies on this page....

" Is that like shrinkage in packaging during shipping?"
