I'm gonna say that during that week, I actually found the signal-to-noise ratio went WAY down (assuming down is a good thing, I can't read the damn graph on alterslash:P)... Most of the trolls left, and there was simply a lot of good stuff posted. *shrug*
When you do get started, how about some "Get your fxxkin ass in the far right lane at least a quarter-mile before your exit instead of trying to cross 4 lanes of morning traffic at the last possible second forcing every car up to a mile behind you to slam on their brakes!" signs as well.
You'd slow down traffic while they tried to read the damn sign:)
Well... to be fair, he keeps TRYING to stop writing the Xanth series. And you really can't tell me that he hasn't written some DAMN good books. Incarnations of Immortality springs IMMEDIATELY to mind... it sort of slowed in the middle but the first two and last two books were extremely good. Then you have the Apprentice Adept series, which was great for the first, oh, three books... and Xanth was really good for the first three, and I'd go so far as to say it kept me truly interested for the first nine. Wait.. I see a pattern here...:P Anyway, the problem is that the fans won't let him drop Xanth.
Oh, sure, he can "just drop it", but really... my point is that he does write some very good fantasy/sci-fi (and above that, is VERY good at mixing the two) - I just see a pattern of his first few books really kicking a LOT of ass, and then the rest of them being so-so to terrible.
Of course, the last book I read of his... it had to be at least 4 years old, so...
Now, I'm into Eddings and... wow, THAT is a series that is good all the way through.:)
If 99% of the people want to discriminate against others, that's not legal. If 99% of the people want to kill and rape whoever they want, that's not legal.
But if 99% of the people want to do that, then...
in the case of discrimination, who are they discriminating against? That other 1%?
in the case of murder and rape, obviously they're murdering and raping likeminded people. Don't you see? 99% of the people DO NOT want to do this, that's why we have rights that prevent this. If 99% of the people DID want to do that, then we wouldn't have rights that prevented it.
So he's right. If 99% of the people want something, they will elect someone who agrees with that point of view, and the laws will get passed or repealed as per that point of view.
Driving is a privilege, eh? I suppose flying is, too. Oh, and riding. Heck, even walking, depending on where you walk.
Driving is most definitely a privilege. I challenge you to show me in the Constitution where it says I have the right to drive. A police officer can determine me unable to drive safely and therefore revoke my license, with proper court authorization. And do I have the right to fly? No. A security guard can tell me no, I endanger the lives of people on the plane. Same with riding - if I'm endangering lives, a police officer can tell me I need to stop.
I don't see where you get your walking bit, except that if you're trespassing, you can be arrested - but that's not being arrested for walking, that's being arrested for being someplace you're not supposed to be.
No, it does not strike me strange at all that many modes of travel are considered privileges - I'm driving a ton of metal here, it could very easily kill many many people if I'm not using it correctly. Need I remind you what someone on a plane with a weapon can do? And a bike can do some damage, too, though far less.
I'm aware that guns also have the capability to kill people - but then, are known felons allowed to carry guns? It's the same with driving a car. Thank you, this has been your conspiracy theorist debunking of the day.
Who would *ever* willingly choose to appear as an African American if they didn't have to?
Ah, but here we see an unintended benefit of this technology. How do you know if that person over there who looks black really is? If the person who you're talking to so nicely IS black, but he's using this paint? Suddenly skin color wouldn't matter anymore, because anyone could be anything...:)
a provision in the DMCA that says if you're writing your own software to do something with the data, you don't have to cripple it by adding in responses to copy protection? I seem to recall that, but I can't think where it was...
Each and every one of those games are transiently installed and they are all largely "3rd party apps" with the notable exceptions of things from Bungie.
Hello? Did you hear that? That was the sound of my brain exploding as you said you understood what you were talking about.
The Xbox is a special case. Since every program written for it is written FOR THAT SYSTEM with its STRIPPED DOWN OS, it doesn't even enter into this. If you start removing chunks of the OS for a standard PC, PROGRAMS ARE GOING TO STOP WORKING. XP Embedded is, as he said, for a closed environment where they don't have to worry about other software depending on parts of the OS they remove.
The reason the Windows "zealots" here lack a sense of humor is because we're so charred from flaming by the Linux "zealots" that vastly outnumber us and can't see anything past "Microsoft is 3v1l d00d!!11!1"
For example, the moderator that shoved the post you're replying to down "Flamebait", simply because he doesn't ever want to hear anything that could possibly make him think that Microsoft wasn't evil in every way.
You're a rarity though - someone who actually IS joking...
Lain (was: Re: You guys are missing something..)
on
G4: The Pong Channel?

Lain is one of the best anime series out there - it's hard to describe, but in this context it means the computer model used in the series to connect to the Wired (futuristic Internet, obviously.)
Interestingly enough, they're very very similar to Macs..:)
This sounds funny, but I remember when I was in elementary school and we used Macs... You know, the old ones that had everything except for the monitor and keyboard/mouse in one unit.. and they'd tell us "Now turn on the hard drive"...
Last year, recordable discs outsold CDs for the first time.... The conclusion made in the article cited and previous articles I've found in the LA Times & NY Times, is that CD copying is exploding, with the recording industry losing out on what could have been a boost in sales.
As someone pointed out in a post where _I_ ranted about this long ago.. When I can buy a spindle of 100 music CDs for about 25USD...
By playing the "work game", these unfortunate addicts build up their inventory and equipment, accumulating items such as cars, houses, furniture. These items allow them to "awe" their fellow players, thereby achieving a sort of social approval that they otherwise would not be able to get.
Holy shit.
Now, the question is... is real life pointless, or are games my ultimate purpose? Jeez, I thought Diablo and such were pointless because of that..:p
'Course it is.. It was in the Hackers soundtrack. Regardless of how realistic that movie wasn't, it kicked ass, and the music was half of what made it so.
I have yet to hear a song from that movie that didn't own. Good Grief comes close, but that one I can still dance to. What pisses me off is they didn't include, or even name, the best songs on the soundtrack; Grand Central Station is only found if you read the credits closely (it's the one that plays during the final battle, so to speak) and you can't find the one that plays when they're reconstructing the worm anywhere.
Sega's also developing for the GBA, though. And really, I'd say that the Palm will never surpass the GBA for gaming. Simply put - the GBA is designed to do nothing but game. It's optimized to that end, and there are many many games for it. Compared to the Palm, which I will admit is a nice platform, but it's designed to be a small computer. It doesn't have a high enough CPU speed to match the GBA's capabilities (there's even a 3D engine being developed for it). Also remember that a GBA is far cheaper than a Palm by at least 20 bucks, depending on which model you're looking at.
Obviously a Palm will never be competition for a GBA if you're looking for a gaming system. On the other hand, if you're looking for a couple games to play and don't really want to buy an entirely new piece of hardware, and you already have a Palm, then yes, you'd just get some games for it.
But saying the Palm could compete with a GBA in terms of gaming is somewhat like saying a computer running Linux could compete with a, say, Gamecube for gaming. (Hey, it's the best I could come up with.) There are a few games out for it, but they're nothing compared to the system designed with that sole purpose in mind.
Heh.. well it was a thought. Maybe the PPC would be a better target for that, I guess... Come to think of it, when you have to OC it to make it run a GB emu, Genesis is out of the question.:P
Damn them for making me buy one of those controllers or a keyboard... and yet, it's cool because I wanted to use up more RAM anyway.:P
Sega's decision to become a third-party dev instead of a console manufacturer just keeps working better and better, eh? Maybe we'll see a Sonic game on the Palm.. *drool* Or better yet a Genesis emulator. Except you'd need the m500 series for that (or one of the others with expansion card support) because the ROMs would be way too big to hold in RAM. Still cool, though..
For a long time they weren't allowed to broadcast local channels LOCALLY either. Cable providers somehow got this legislation in place as an anti-competitive tactic... it's only recently that we're able to have any sort of local TV over satellite. Which is, of course, a Good Thing(tm).
I'm sure the reason this law is in place is for the same reason the other was; the cable companies are fearful that they will be overtaken by something better. Doubtful however; even if they don't have as many subscribers for television, they will for broadband, at least until satellite becomes reasonable.
I have a friend who lives out in the middle of nowhere; he'd have to pay to have cable line laid for broadband. He was checking satellite BB prices - $100 a month for any decent speed... so there's really no competition there unless it's the only choice.
As the mother says in the article:
"Shawn was playing 12 hours a day, and he wasn't supposed to because he was epileptic, and the game would cause seizures," she said. "Probably the last eight times he had seizures were because of stints on the computer."
Last I checked there actually WAS a warning on games saying something to the effect of "If you are prone to epileptic seizures please consult a physician before playing this, seizures have been known to occur even in people with no history, if you experience any of these signs discontinue play immediately:" and it gives a list of the warning signs of an epileptic seizure.
At least, on all my NES games it had that in the first page of the manual. I believe it's still required on ANY manual for a game. So there you go, there's already a warning label.
If he wasn't supposed to be playing then why did you let him play you stupid bitch?
He was 21. Lived by himself. She couldn't really stop him. Which bothers me more, since he was self-sufficient if he lived on his own..

Looking at their site... is there a way to make it sync with my Palm? It doesn't say on the website...
Looks great though... think I'll try it, since I've used that particular feature of Outlook about three times over the past year...

Interestingly enough, Winamp 2.80 now supports Ogg natively.
:)
Now if I could just get the damn things to show up on "Show All Supported Files", I'd be in business

I've burnt 6 out of the last 200 that I've owned.. and that was free music that I wanted to hear in my car.
Pathetic...

I remember the Game Gear. I just think it'd be better to bring a Genesis emu over instead. :)
