and for those lost souls out there buying into the whole.NET thing, they are also having to upgrade to XP and Microsoft is not giving it away for free.
Oh boy. Lets see. Let me click on "Windows Update" on my three year old Win2K system. Here we go..Ok..whats this? "Download Microsoft.NET Framework". Hmm, where is the fee? I can't seem to find one. Maybe because its stone cold free.
Perhaps your confusing.NET with Visual Studio.NET, in which case your level of expertise would disqualify you from getting near any one of my computers. Or maybe even worst, your confusing updraging an iAPP with upgrading an OS, in which case you should be disqualified from posting on Slashdot.
Unreal Championship on the Xbox has FULL custimization of the controls. Full.
XBox Live..One Gamers Perspective

I thought I'd take a moment and share my experience with Xbox live. MS haters can stop reading now since your mind is already made up. I'm in my early thirties, make my living using open-source software, and gaming since I was ten..blowing my quarter collection on Asteroids and wasting massive hours on my Atari.
In short, XBL is nothing short of a revolution in console gaming. Say what you will about MS software, few question the quality and innovation of MS hardware and the Xbox and XBox Live are shining examples of that.
I've rarely had so much fun playing video games. I know I'm not alone becuase I can hear the shrieks and groans, the yells and crys and curses, the outright bawling laughter of other gamers from across the country and the world coming right through my XBL communicator.
I'll start with a quick overview of why I chose the Xbox as my gaming console and then to a review of the XBox Live (XBL) service.
After wearing out my N64 I was ready for my next gen console. The decision was fairly simple. Yes the PS2 had more games, but a great majority of those games were throwaways. Not only that but I wasnt planning on buying a bookshelf worth of games anyway. I usually just buy the best games of a genre and play them through and through. The Xbox seemed like the best choice. It had the better graphics (by far), the HDTV, the 5.1 sound, the hard drive, ethernet, CD burning to HD all built in! The other two did not even come close. I buy a console because of the CONSOLE, not the games.
So I buy a Xbox and Halo. On a side note, Halo might be just be the best video game ever and definatly the best FPS ever. But don't take my word for it, just read the reviews.
When Xbox Live was released I was first in line. Setup was super easy and painless. Drop a line from my hub to the Xbox, insert setup CD, verify that I'm a adult with my credit card, pick a gamertag and presto! I'm online.
Xbox live comes with two games. Whacked! and MotoGP. Whacked is some whacked platformer that girls seem to line. MotoGP is one great motorcycle racing game. Needless to say, the graphics and gameplay are outstanding. But the no doubt..the best part is the online play.
So far I'm playing Unreal Championship, MotoGP and Mech Assault. All games are great. Online play is smooth. Lag is almost non-existant. The voice-communicator works great. The sound is clear and clean, and has the quality of a cell phone.
To sit on my soft, legs on the coffee table, 27" TV in front of me (soon to be HDTV), hooked up to the world and kicking peoples ass on Unreal is a amazing thing. It really really is.
There is sense, when talking to other people on XBL, that were part of a something new. And indeed we are. Ok, ok, I know all this is possible on a PC. But we're talking console here. Since my XBL, my PC is exclusivly for work and making money and my console is for games. I play in my den, I work in my office.
I'm sure the PS2 and GameCube have some fun and great games, but if I cant
Play online with one login across all games
Listen to my music playing from the HD of the console as I play
Listen the games in 5.1 and see it in hi-res HDTV
Hear you curse as I blow your ass-up in Mech-Assault
And much much more Then I'm not intereted.
You don't think the Xbox and Xbox live are revolutionary? See if the next gen Nintendo and the PlayStation3 don't have everything the Xbox has today.
Now I know MS has had some security issues. And no doubt, there will be more issues to work out. But, I would bet my house that if by some magical stroke, the market position of Windows and Linux magically switched, where Linux has +90% of the desktop market, we would be seeing attacks and vulnerbilities to the Linux desktop unlike anything we see on Windows today.
I have a feeling that, the MS "Security" response is a warm fuzzy blanket to Linuxites much like the Blue Screen of Death used to be.
Time to grow up and move on. This is not PS2 vs. Xbox and your not 12 years olds with a emotional attachment to some piece of hardware and code..or are you??
The problem is that Microsoft chooses to retain their obfuscated binary format as the default save type for documents.
Comments like this give me the creepies. As a software developer, the last thing I want is some entity telling me what my default format should be.
It's also indicitive of the elitist attitudes of many Linuxites. In effect, the poster is saying that users will never have the capability to inform themselves and make a choice as to how they want to use their computers.
Sorry to burst your little bubble but the Xbox is outselling the GameCube everywhere. MS just announced a 5 year commitment to Xbox. By that time Xbox2 will probably be the top selling console.
Don't own a Xbox? Too bad for you. It rocks. And Xbox Live is the coolest internet technology since Napster.
How sad that on the day Microsoft launches Xbox Live, we have a story about how much money MS is losing on the Xbox.
The desire among the overzelous Linuxites for the Xbox to fail is palpatable at Slashdot. Just look all the posts advising people to buy a Xbox but not buy any games. Just so MS can lose money. Its pathetic and sad.
Go ahead and buy a Xbox, waste your time and install Linux on it. But I dare you not to play Halo on it (Game of the Year and a work of art).
I dare you not to plug in your Cat-5 and fire up Unreal Championship (released Today!). Oh! and when Halo2 is released later late 2003, please do'nt go and buy it. Leave it to the serious gamers.
The Xbox is a great piece of tech. Real gamers know it. Thats why in the states its outselling the GameCube (read linked article above).
I was skeptical about not having mouse-look when I first started playing Halo. And it took a couple of days to get used to the controls. But all is well. Halo is just a great great great game and I'm slowly falling in love with my xbox. Can't wait for xbox live later this year!
Not really. Tokay poo are solid little pellets. Very easy to clean up. The cool thing about them was you could make out cockroach features in the poo. It was like a Gieger sculpture or something found on a Alien movie set, a very organic yet dark evil look to them.
I just love my Tokay Gecko. It's as mean as it can be. The Tokay is the pit-bull of geckos.
I had a bad roach problem. I did'nt want to use pesticides in my home so a friend recommended a Tokay. I was open to all options so I bought a Tokay and let it loose in my home.
The roaches were gone in two days. It was lovely. I would wake up at night turn the lights on and see my little guy on a wall somewhere.
It did such a good job eating roaches that it eventually ran out of food. I had to catch it (not easy since it put up a good fight) and put in a terrarium where it happily eats crickets.
With all due respect:) My point stands. If I were to maximize the Photoshop on Windows and do the same on the MAC, I would have almost exactly the same thing.
By the way, this is why i prefer Windows: Each file open/save/save-as dialog box is a explorer window unto itself. Therefore as I'm saving a file I can take the occasion to rename other files or move them around. I make my living off Photoshop and I use this expolorer ability all the time.
I think people tend to personify their tools/cars/computers/ect.. its really silly actually. A tool is a tool. Pick whatever helps you acheive your goals..if your a pro, that is.
I thank you for you kind reply. But the reason I did pick Photoshop is because it runs on both Mac and Windows. I can't for the life of me understand what it is about the Macintosh Photoshop that facilitates better design than the Windows Photoshop! It's the same damn thing!
If you read the reviews, you'll notice that the new OS10 borrows heavily from Windows design.
People compaining about bad OS design in Windows reveal only reveal their own ignorance and prejudices much like the people who complain about stability in Windows (2k & XP). It is a non-issue to professional Windows users like myself.
I want the OS to be out of the way, clean and solid. Windows 2000 fits the bill perfectly. Besides, like another poster mentioned, at the end of the day, it's really about the apps. A perfect example is Photoshop. Adobe has designed an interface for Photoshop that suits the application and its' users perfectly.
Linux users should tread lightly when complaining about Microsoft user/OS design. I've yet to come across a OSS GUI based application that does not "borrow" heavily from the work of Microsoft and Apple.
Windows 2000. Its already super-easy to do - but I've made it even easier. I got shortcuts to little batch files that will change the res. and frequency on the fly. I put the shortcuts on my taskbar. Click! 800x600 Click! 1152x864 Click! 1280x960 Why change res? I'm a developer and alot of times its helpfull for me to experience my applications/websites in different resolutions. Thats just one of many reasons I'm always switiching resolutions.
Surely ASP and ColdFusion destroy PHP in developing new websites. At least - the websites that matter
Like Yahoo!?
Hrmmmmm. O.K. I'll bite the troll
......How am I supposed to develop .NET using the free .NET framework? For that I need XP.
You bit, now taste the bitterness of your ignorance
Ooops...wrong. All you need is the FREE SDK. You can develop on XP or Win2000.
Here is my favorite part:
If you look at my number, you will see that I've been around Slashdot for a while. Before you from the appearance of it.
Holy Moly!! I havent seen that argument around here for awhile. You should put your Slashdot number on your resume.

Perhaps your confusing
How about product updates that require you to purchase new versions of other software because of broken compatibility with updates
You've made your accusation. Now show us your not a knee-jerk Linuxite and prove your allegations with some linked sources.

You would think the first online gaming system in the world would garner a mention on Slashdot. Where they have "News for Nerds. Stuff that matters.".

Sorry, I figuered it out. MOD ME DOWN!!!!
Almost never really funny.
Well, here we have it folks. A prime example of what happens when someone takes the political agenda of the Slashdot editors and their ilk to heart.
Already I've read comparisons of Mugabe to Microsoft lawyers, but this is even worse.
We are no better. I hate to say it, but it's true."
Truly, one of the most lamest Slashdot posts I've read in a while..and that includes Micheals observations.
Or how about a Beowulf cluster of one of there?
Good Job!
