Allthough Google might have a better reputation then Yahoo or MSN (and certainly Alexa) they're not saints either. The privacy policy for Orkut for example wasn't all that too.
Despite that, this sounds like a first class mindslip from amazon
The moment i saw the headline my mind came to Escher, showing us water floating upwards in the painting http://www.petergh.f2s.com/waterfall.jpg Now let's wait for the real life implementation of the ever-rising stairs...
It's not only the idea that phising / pharming is free, the data just might be more accurate. I know from my own habbits I'm not too happy to provide personal information on websites where it's easy to be harvested. On the other hand if a piece of malware is distributing the info while I'm not aware of it, it just might be more accurate
I like the idea of the google toolbar, it brings some features that extend the functionality of the little google search-box that's default in firefox. On the other had, we got 83 search extentions for firefox at the moment. Will the google-bar just be another one in the list or will it actually bring something extra the others don't have..
I'm not sure wether business people, analysts of journalists will ignore asterisk. I worked at a bank for a couple of years and just as I left I hearded they were considering asterisk for their callcentre.
Have you even read the article? It's about places where you're not able to reboot the machine but you can run programs from a CD. Try that using the knoppix or any other LiveCD.
I knew the system allready but now amazon is joining this program it could just make a big flight.
I don't kow however if this would work anywhere outside of Japan. The cultural aspects of payments out there are quit different from those in the western world.
I didn't know Hans well but we hung around in the same IRC-channel. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends that suffered from this tragic loss.
Also a get well soon for the other guys in the car...
When I hear Pentium I just think of all those who had one while I still had to struggle with a 486SLC-50. A Pentium 60 was so much faster but my parents didn't buy my excuses why I needed one:(
Me being a dutchman I can only be happy with this. It has been known for ages the dutch can drill tunnels, build bridges and banks like no other nation can.
It's hard to believe anyone would pay us for drilling some place usefull for nobody but if we profit from it economically I guess I should cheer
It looks like I got the same problem. The status window keeps saying connecting to server for a while and after a while seems to time-out. It gives a disconnected:-(
Of course I see the geekism of watching TV on a device this small and portable but I don't think the world is waiting for it. For years I've been very sceptical about video on small devices. Why do people keep on buying bigger and bigger TV's? They want to experience the movie. On a small device this is harder.
Allthough an individual might not get rich out of these practices, the power of the mass counts. By sharing this information with the rest of the world more people can sue. Maybe $500 won't hurt the telemarketeer but I bet 1 million people all suing for the $500 will...
There's definately some tension between privacy, political freedoms, law-enforcement and anti-terrorism-measures.
I'm just concerned about the way the US is trying to tell the rest of the world how to handle this tension. Every country for itself should make it's own descision in how to solve these challenges.
After all these years I found the reason my father wouldn't let me operate my minitiature trains. I guess he was affraid I was too young to own a PDA;-)
At first I considered a blog as somekind of diary people would keep online. The main reason people would read blogs was inspired by some kind of voyeurism. Nowadays most blogs are just a view on todays (or yesterdays) news. People nowadays read blogs to read the headlines and possibly different opinions.
I've once started a blog myself. Didn't last too long. The process of starting on including installing etc. was more fun to me than writing in it every day;-)
Allthough no date is given this sure is good news. The PS2 will continue to grow as a replacement for a some other devices. Consider running linux on it, watching DVD (home brew or not I don't care), and game all you want and all this on your TV screen. Other points are the thing isn't realy ugly and therefor easily accepted in the living room, it's quite so the noise won't bother you too much.
Well I never realized these things were that old. I remember in the Netherlands we first had the kermit (green phones) that had to be very near to access points. Back then we used to laugh at people making a cellular call.
With the arrival of Libertel (now Vodafone) in 1995 I took my first subsscription. I remember getting the phone for donating a small amount (about $10) to the red cross.
The first few phones were big, heavy and had very little battery-life compared to modern cellphones
I see a lot of sarcasm (not only here) on the subject of NT4 not being fixed. Let's not forget the OS was introduced in 96. I'm not sure about the rest of you but I'm not running a linux-distro that's 7 years old.
I remember seeing the movie short after I saw the Matrix. The Matrix had superior special effects etc. but 13th floor didn't need the budget, special effects et al. It just took my breath away with the simplicity and a great script
I remember getting most of the games I ever played as a gift from my parents. IF C&C can be sold to adults I think it realy won't help. Violence isn't stopped by banning games in my opinion. It's the role-model kids see that's influencing them the most

Time to get everybody on IRC, Jabber, etc.
The page containing (at least I think it does) is slashdotted?

For years people have tried to convince me Cobol is dead. Why do I keep seeing Cobol-programmers busy with (what I think is) coding?
Now there's someone (I don't mind he's called Ellison) that's trying to tell me software engineering is dead? Gimme a break

A different way isn't allways a worse way
And just this morning my 100 mile trainride took me 2 hours thanks to a freight-train running in front of us.
How about different kinds of railed vehicles...

It could be a poor man's PC if you ask me

Does it sync my mail, calender etc. I'ld really hate not being able to check that while swimming ;-)
