    Good comment. One thing stands out in your post - "If working towards freedom, prepare for war".
    This is the very reason why I support George Bush. Freedom for the Iraqis from tyrannical dictators ( need I mention his worthless sons and what their exploits were ) is so valuable. This very statement is the lifeblood of the Iraq war.
    Its not only freedom for the iraqis, but freedom from fear itself ( of terrorists and other fanatics )

    Not really.
    20GB HDD = ~ $30
    wireless controller = ~ $35
    wireless headset = ~ $15
    Ethernet cable = ~ $5
    Remote control = ~ $20

    Total = ~ $105

    You're paying about 95% of that cost. It is a bad deal.
    IMHO, releasing different versions of the console is plain silly. Might as well buy a PC in that case.
    The whole reason for a console so its a std. architecture and everyone has the same specs.

    Part of what you say pertains to a savvy tech user ( who're probably the ones using the torrents anyways). However, a video file can exist within a .exe ( zipped Self Extracting exe's ). I'm sure you perhaps aware of that. ( Microsoft distributes their WMV HD samples like that. in .exe's )

    The 5min ads before the movie doesn't bother me.
    It in fact gives me time to settle down. Buy a coke or popcorn if I want to, without missing any of the movie.
    Also, if I'm late or other people are late, I don't mind if they block my view for the ads or trailers.

    I *do* enjoy movie trailers as it keeps me interested in whats to come.

    If there were no ads or trailers, I'll be missing the start of the movie in almost every movie.

    However, I do agree that the time given to these should be cut down. There should be no more than 5 mins of ads and trailers combined. ( 2 mins for ads and 3 mins for trailers max. ) A theater violating this should be fined for wasting time. Also, theaters should post the actual start time of the movie.

    Ok... you cannot play video games with this well.

    For one, you need to use your thumbs to move the mouse. The ordinary mouse -- you use your palm, not any digit on the hand. This means you now have 2 less buttons you can access on the keyboard as its busy on the mouse.
    Sorry. will not work for video games.

    Also from the screenies it looks painful.

    Maybe this will cause the stress injury than remove it !!!

    A firewall shouldn't be a solution to poor design/implementation problems and code bugs. That is simply not working. What if someone gets through the firewall? ... that would mean the firewall has poor design/implementation problems and code bugs. That is simply not working .....

    Firewalls are needed to be the catch-all. The second (or first depending on how you look at it ) layer of defense. This is the reason why forts had moats built around it.

    Really, I feel any OS can do the things I'm looking out for it to do in its scope. C'mon, you can't expect Windows to do this -- "zcat file.gz | grep miss | awk '{print $3}' | sort -n | uniq -c" like some guy pointed out earlier. Of course, you won't approach Windows that way to do it. And how many times have you really required to do that command on a Windows desktop ? Same way, you'll not approach linux to play fancy new games. I use many OSes ( MacOSX, Linux, Windows, BeOS, PalmOS, QNX, Solaris, IRIX ) and they're all good in their own respects. Of course, Windows is at the bottom but its still useful for certain productivity tasks. It like the cars. you won't take a beat up chevy station wagon to the Indy 500. You go get what's best for the job. Depending on what you want to do. Also, for the author -- a lot of her Windows quirks can be solved if she paid more attention to her setup or by visiting Windows Annoyances.

    It may be 2005 but my P3-450Mhz still packs a punch for my wife.
    She's blissfully unaware that she's now using the 450Mhz instead of the super duper AMD 3500+.

    From browsing the internet, to playing Solitaire, to reading email, even this 450Mhz from 1999 works like a charm.

    Forget the processor, today the bus speeds are like 3 times faster.

    This makes us wonder why do you really need a 10GHz PC ? Perhaps you can lower your heating bill using this as a heater :)

    guys, you're forgetting the cost of the HardDrive !!
    Sure, $200 will buy you a decent PVR card, but where does it store this data ? You need like a 100GB Hard Disk ( add another $100 )
    So, net cost of home solution is : $300 ( or more for better cards )
    PVR of cable co. still $8/month.

    It'll take 3 years or more to match $300 at $8/month. The Cable Co. PVR wins hands down.
    Not to mention its remote control ( add $25-$40 ) and its subscription guide ( maybe free or $5 ) and its ease of use and replacability is free.

    There are some things money can buy, for everything else theres the PVR.
