  1. I just.... on Spider-Man, Star Wars and the Power of Myth · · Score: 2

wrote off the $114 million of Spider-Man as the American public reaching out for something to do. It had been a while since a good movie had been out and the time was prime. What does this say to the hollywood types who are shaking in their boots and shaking down "online video traders" for cutting into their profits? Basically it says that if you have a good MOVIE or good MUSIC(in the case of the RIAA -- these pieces are interchangable) that people will still spend real green money on your products in record numbers. And then you look like horses asses saying that the Internet "piracy" of media is killing you -- you say that with more money overflowing out of your pockets than ever before. Like Lars did when he came out against Napster -- it's ironic how people don't start "stealing your money" until you have more than you will ever need......When you were eating macaroni and touring in a van for Kill Em All' I bet you did not mind people trading your tapes to get word of mouth......(Much the same way that those suckers trying to get their $2000 film noticed for inclusion into Sundance -- would cream their jeans if they thought 1 million people where sharing their film on the net....But once that same film makes 1 million dollars -- then you better not share it..)

  2. Fool me once... on Virus Piggybacks Microsoft Mail Worm · · Score: 2

I don't use outlook but my wife does. What I find so amazing is that Microsoft can still let this happen after it has happened so many times before. I know it is easy to procure a patch that will fix this problem....But what about the last patch that I applied the last time an "outlook" scripting bug decided to reak havoc on the rest of her system? Why did not that patch disallow any arbitary executing of scripts or programs just by viewing an email in the preview pane? Did they only patch it good enough so that that the current virus of the day would be stopped --- but leave it open for future virii to get in through the same door....different angle. Why were they not smart enough to notice the symptoms the first 50 or so times and somewhere cure the disease along the way? And yet many (not mine) fortune 500 companies still use this software? What a joke -- these are the same companies that screan applicants backgrounds, and have 50000 processes in place to protect other business interests -- yet continue to use software that is like a ticking timebomb that is going off on a weekly basis.

  3. What about... on Attack of the Clones to Cost Economy $300m · · Score: 2

  4. I for one on Themes.org Reborn at Freshmeat · · Score: 4, Insightful

am glad they finally did something with the garbage heap that t.o had become. I remember back in the day when t.o was a very neat place with some talented people running the show. Then they turned into something really, really, bad....(worse than the OLD fat, dieing on the toilet Elvis). Freshmeat has always been cool --- thanks to the Freshmeat team. And to the people that let t.o die in the first place --- what rock are you all under? The aquisition by OSDN should have made you better -- not killed you. But at least it probably sold a few panner ads for the rubbernecks that would drive by to look at the carnage.

I hate censorship as much as the next guy...(however I am now a father and can appreciate not wanting your kids subjected to all of that crap) ... But why would I base a computer buying decision on if the store offered "alternative clean" CD's? I can see they understand that their clients (shoppers) are more family oriented and may want to purchase "today's music" without "today's decedent message..." 13. Re:"KDE Heavy?" on Red Hat 7.3 Coming Along · · Score: 2

I think the KDE heavy vs. Gnome light is perfectlly understandable:

As a long time Gnome fan, I have always thought KDE was nice but never ran it for more than a few days at a time before switching back to Gnome...But I must say that with KDE 3, there is some amazing maturity that I just can't deny. The transparent menus are really cool -- along with the anti aliased fonts.....It just LOOKS and FEELS much better all the way around. Plus the web browser holds it's own. I am very impressed and have been using it 99% of the time since 3 came out. Gnome seems to be lagging behind a bit these days when it comes to overall polish and pizazz....And Nautilus seems to be hurting more than helping the overall FEEL of the whole Gnome experience...

    >> "Another good thing going to the Jukebox 3 is the upgradeable firmware meaning possible support for more audio formats like Ogg Vorbis."

I think every player out there has said this. It's in the boilerplate promo kit that is sold by hardware based digital audio companies everywhere. Bottom line is to read between the lines --- "If we really wanted to support OGG we would out of the box -- but by saying that it is possible in the future we move 10% more units, then so be it, because the lifecycle for an individuale portable mp3 model (in the marketplace) is akin to a 2001 calendar in December of said year...."

Anymore with flash and banner ads everywhere the content begins to slip away. Plus I don't know how friendly flash sites are with search engines. You can't put a price on someone being able to fire up google and search for "policy on prescription drugs" and find your site. (I would trade that for flashy, bandwidth hogging eye candy any day!)

  25. I was wondering on Learn About Ximian and Gnome From Nat Friedman · · Score: 2

This may sound like an ignorant question, but it has been gnawing at me for the last year or so,

What advantages do I get from running the whole gnome package? Every few months I try out the latest and greatest for a little while (gnome and/or kde), and always find myself feeling a little slowed down -- so I end up throwing out the whole "startgnome" and/or "startkde" thing and replacing it with an X session that consists soley of the gnome panel and fluxbox -- and things feel a little more responsive. The only reason I am asking this question is that after I "trim" down my desktop -- I don't feel like I have lost anything -- or have been forced to make a sacrifice just for the issue of speed. What am I missing?
