I can recognize that my computer and internet connection are not "needs" without having a superstitious aversion to them. I've also lived, at times, without hot water. It was uncomfortable, but I lived through it and I was happy throughout.
I've never seen "FIght Club," so I'm not sure what that comment was about, but if you're getting your ideas of what my "anti-consumerism," or indeed any anti-consumerism really means from a Hollywood movie, perhaps you should be more circumspect. I'm not suggesting that there is a conspiracy, but from the very nature of the movie business I would expect a great deal of disinformation in any presentation they make on the subject of (anti-)consumerism.
So what is it about anti-consumerism that is "completely bogus?"
People have been biologically, intellectually, and emotionally unchanged for a very long time now. It stands to reason that our needs are also unchanged. Perhaps you meant "desires."
What, then, is industry providing? More desire. Who cares if they can't fulfill it, as long as the people believe that industry can fulfill it and keep relying on their "innovations."
I agree, but trade is a multiplier. If you have zero to trade, you have no ability to create wealth in trading that zero. Even the wealth from trade in services is eventually traceable back to material wealth.
Yeah, "Politburo," and since governments have never been lacking in responsibility, they are the optimal entities to which we should hand over our freedoms.
Thus, the need for pontificating and false logic from centralization apologists.
Uh, our economy is, always has been, and always will be land-dependent. You can posit all the new economy dot-coms and insurance companies you want, but ultimately, all wealth comes from land, whether it's a raw material or a location for value-added production.
And yes, it has lead to feudalism. Have you paid your property taxes lately? What would happen if you didn't?
One thing about homeschooling is that it clearly puts the responsibility on the parents, who, not coincidentally, have the biggest stake in the result of their children's education. This has a tendency to make everyone shape up.
I've been amazed at how much more involved I've become with my kids' overall development (intellectual and social) since we started homeschooling. I don't regret a minute of it either.
When you create a world and the reality within it, your imagination can create one in which nonviolent solutions are preferable for any number of reasons. When you are participating in the Real World, your imagination and preferences don't extend as far anymore, and if the rest of the world is actually violent, you must have some coping mechanism.
A prevalent "liberal" coping mechanism is denial. A "conservative" coping mechanism is pure defense, a "cynical" coping mechanism is attack and expansion, and a truly "Christian" coping mechanism is persuasion through sacrifice.
This taxonomy puts the current administration in the "cynical conservative" category, not the "Christian conservative" one, though I still prefer it to the liberal response.
Is it unpatriotic to ask why this is in "politics.slashdot.org" ?
I guess some people vote at the ballot box, some people vote with their feet, some people vote with their dollars, and some people vote with their semtex and C4. It's all part of the beautiful tapestry of diversity that is politics, right?
These people are monsters. this is no political act.

And now all that remains is for me to think up a useful application for tranparency.
How about Powerpoint presentations? Now you won't need to print out backup slides to celluloid transparencies, because you can make them transparent right on the screen.
But in Germany, it is illegal to spank your children. If they grow up to be undisciplined little snots, how can the government hold parents responsible when the government took away the parents' freedom to discipline their children as they see fit?
As if "Objectivists" (or even Libertarians) are the only people with an interest in preserving liberty and the obligation of the state to protect private property instead of the revenues of municipalities. The Kelo ruling should offend anyone who grates against the idea of a government being able to take from you if they decide they will be better off after the taking.
We'll last longer than we will against that Death Star.
And your slashdot password is "ewqasdcxz"
Thanks!
When will you finally conclude that consumption of mass media is neither required, nor even beneficial for your lives?
Let them cement themselves into their irrelevance.
There can be no doubt that "Iran" is next.
He's apparently also mad that 1996 ever happened. What's with that stylesheet?
What a failure, then, because Minix still doesn't to what Linus wanted it to.
That bus full of chickens with 40 people on the roof still only counts as one driver, though.
Sure: here you go.

Real football or metric?

You gotta eat.

Debating whether to post AC.... Nah.

Funny, that was my point too.
Not if they spent all their money on the procedure already.
I think you mean the "Firefo Centre for Resuscitation Research." The "Safar Centre" is in Cupertino.
... and the syphilis patients got free government health care.
