  1. Re:Jim Sinclair on Mice Cured of Autism · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well... thats fine for all of you higher functioning types on the spectrum (and the Slashdot Self-Diagnosed Aspergers Posse) but many autistics are *severely* disabled, with no speech, and no chance of an independant life. You can choose not to be treated or 'cured', and that's fine, as your condition is managable. But this could mean that some severely disabled people get the chance to express themselves and *have* an identity.

This experiment won't 'cure' autism directly, but it will provide data that might provide treatment for others.

  3. Re:Note to ZUNE Marketing Maven...Run on Critical Review of the Zune · · Score: 1

To be fair, whoever was responsible for this travesty probably only had half-assed backing from Microsoft, resulting in crappy deals with the music studios.
Apple had Steve Jobs and the advantage of catching the labels mostly unaware. The Zune had bureacracy and upper management more interested in nuking Linux.

Well, my guess is its starts looking increasingly unlikely if they can't line up another location *quickly*, because then filmmakers start running into problems with the actor's schedules (contracts would have to be negotiated, they may have other projects lined up) to say nothing of the crew.

  8. Re:Wait what on Teen Sues MySpace Over Sexual Assault · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Yeah, it's ambulance chasing.

I am so annoyed with 'mom'. The girl is stupid, and she probably lied to her parents about where she was going, because teens do do that. In fact lets *hope* she lied, because if her mom okayed this without meeting the boy, she's negligent.

But I'm really annoyed with her parents. They failed in their duty of care here after the fact. The girl has had a nasty experience, and she will probably need counselling, but she is still healthy and alive. The perp is in jail. The parent's role now is to be there for her... and reinforce for her that *this is why* you don't go off with strange guys from MySpace. This is *why* when she's so young, she needs to clear her boyfriends with her folks. She might not have been alive to sue anybody.... she was very lucky.

But no. Ohnoes! MySpace! It was the bad innerweb people!

    Agggh! *HeadGoBoom*

Helps to have management who will back you too. If your boss falls over him (or her) self to kiss ass, that approach will land you in hot water. Though realisticly you probably didn't want to work there anyway if your boss-unit is clueless about your real priorities...

  15. Bad odds. on Star Wars Episode 3 PG-13? · · Score: 1

Reality of the situation, the original trilogy was a fluke. Right time, right technology, and if you watch the documentary on the final DVD of the OT box set, there must have been a hundred times that a divergence from GL's original vision, or serendipity, made the movies better. I'm talking about stuff like the Khiber crystal, using Anthony Daniels actual voice and not an american dub, stuff like that.
I'm not saying that the final movie won't be good, I'm saying the odds are against it :(

The homemaker and baby-machine options are not just a way to drop out, they're a socially-acceptable alternative realm that women can excel in. I don't think there's any sort of equivalent for men (not until the man-as-primary-caregiver meme gets better established).
Nothing *wrong* with that, but this woman has provided an excellent example that there are amazing things girls can do in geeky fields and that if you want to do it badly enough, it *is* possible, even if school/college wasn't for you. Having a living breathing example to point to is so very important for girls.
