I think that study of it could lead us to some Anti-Muscle-Wasting therapy for People living in space. I know the bone density thing is also a problem, but one thing at a time.
I seem to recall some comics when I was a kid where this race of humans was engineered to be super-musclly and dense to be able to survive living on the surface of Jupiter or some other larger planet with a LOT of gravity... Weird concept, but a good start on a plan... if the bugs could be worked out (of ALL of it), we could provide maybe a month or so of genetic modification to a given person to prepare them to go live in a different environment...Like Mars or one of the other planets...or even just out among the asteroids/space...
I think that a lot of traditional evolution has stopped. There's not a whole lot of "Survival of the fittest" going on. People aren't regularly being consumed by cheetahs and the like anymore. Mutation like this one and self-modification sound like the way to go.
Fluorinert. Yep- That rings a bell.
That lets me do a search that actually finds something...
A Google Link!
Not the one I remember, but neat none-the-less...
Actually, the one I saw the guy built a custom styrofoam cooler/case, put in all his goodies except the power supply, then filled it up with some odd and expensive 3m non-conductive liquid...actually I think he used mineral oil first, but that turned out pretty gooey... Then put in a pump and started pumping liquid from the bottom to the top where it dropped over a coolant radiator.
Yeah- that's a long way to go to attempt overclocking, but it was pretty neat.
IIRC, it ended up overheating anyway because the liquid got less viscous (more??--more solid) the colder it got, and created isolated thermal heat nodes around the hot components. Would've been cool to see on an infrared scope...
So what if there were multiple panes of this oled-on-glass sandwiched together...say 1024 of them...so you could make a gargantuan cube of glass and electronics that could display 3d images with actual positional data points... And all of it encased in a non-oxygenated block of glass. It'd probably be heavy as hell, and I don't know what kind of super video card it would take to drive it, but wow.... Holo-cube... I like the sound of that...
That reminds me of something... YEARS ago when I was running win98, I also used this small utility called MemTurbo. Basically, it de-fragged your active memory and cleared up a lot of the flotsam and what not that was still lingering in active memory, but no longer needed or asked for. It had a manually run mode and a 'trigger-point' mode, where if your memory usage went up to a certain percentage, it auto-ran and cleaned up unnecessary stuff. Probably flushed any cache as well...
If we had something like this, (maybe even as a kernel module?) It would probably at least be a decent tool for eliminating or delaying disk-swaps... Run it on a cron job or as-needed.
I'm thinking this might be a very cool little project to write if it hasn't been written already (Or isn't even feasible...???)) Time to do some googling I guess...
Actually quite easily. And I think I drank/smoked a LOT back then... Not a straight 4, but a high 3. Nope- not quite sure how I did it- I just did. And although not being a total social outcast or an entirely popular person...Hmmm...come to think of it, I really didn't care too much what other people thought of that stuff...
Actually, I met one guy in college who basically did NOTHING except Study and LSD (mostly at the same time...). Straight 4.0. Intense and private individual. Nice guy otherwise, but I didn't see much of him. Kinda weird that.
Of course in more recent times, I've grown more aware of bodily chemistry and the effects of what goes into the mix... Regulate what works best for you and you'll be happy...probably...but then again, IANADr.
This is true. And also true is that maybe it wont be NASA going to mars. That whole X-Prize thing is meant to encourage some tendencies in the private sector. Maybe NASA should become more of an Advisory/Grant-giving Org... "You guys can go into space when you get off your fat asses and make it work!"
I hate to say it, but it very well could be that Corporate funding will put people into space. Now if only there was some way to ensure that such University research was mandatorily open-sourced...or open-patented...or whatever needs to be done to make sure standards can be put in place and the tech is available to everyone if it happens to be state-funded.
Sorry Guy, but you're not entirely correct there on the age spread... I bought my 30 year old gf one on the GB Advances and installed an afterburner kit in it. Its pretty sweet- she probably plays that more than she watches tv. (For some reason between the computers and the GB, the TV doesn't get much usage...;-)
I know a lot of college students who also own them. Turns out they're a decent waste of time if you have time to waste. And yes- I also know some 12 year olds who have them.
They make a LOT of different games for those things... And yes- a lot of em are aimed at the pre-teen crowd, but they also make a lot of classic games too. (I play Joust-)
Opinion, sure-- But that's based on something one way or the other. It could very well be that MS has a quality control problem. Some of their stuff comes out fine, with a random smattering of unworkable crap. (And personally, I prefer logitech mice to the MS brand...)
Yes it could also be generic microsoft bashing. But even that comes from somewhere.
Yes- I had moderator points today, but its important to note that facts AND opinion are 2 of the big reasons I come to/. on a daily basis.
And that brings up another question I was thinking about the other day...
Have you ever received any aid for Wine from IBM's OS2 project? And as OS2 has for the most part 'not succeeded in gaining desktop dominance' (Trying to be nice...), do you think there is any possibility of IBM choosing to Open the Source? And do you think that would help you out much?
Actually, there's one more consideration that I'm currently subject to...
ATI has pissed me off with more flaky drivers and hardware than any other vendor I can think of (Sans MS).
I may be only holding a grudge, but I've been quite happy since swearing off ATI Products. And Nvidia works just fine for me, so I don't feel I'm missing out on anything either, although yes- I have to say it would be nice to see them take back the "speed Crown" or whatever they're calling the current state-of-the-art...
Hmmm.... Okay- All flaming and heated arguments aside, Gimp isn't a photoshop replacement. Does it replace the need for graphics editing that a photoshop-type app could fill for me? Yep. Not everyone needs a semi-truck to haul their garden-trailer around the yard.
And when it really comes down to it, it is an Option. If you don't like it, don't use it. We won't force you to. Really! But personally, I do think Gimp is good. I use it (a lot).
I do graphic design and layout to earn my paycheck. 90+ percent of the machines we work on are BSD, and Gimp (even though we use an ancient version of it...) actually works just fine for over 90 percent of any raster work we need done. We also have a small contingent of Macs with all the pricey and coveted adobe/macromedia/etc programs on it for the times when customers feel the need to submit their own work.
Seeing what I've seen, I can say that yes- its necessary to have those Macs to use those applications. There doesn't seem to be any way around that for now. But the Unix machines are WAY more productive and profitable. There's just no comparison. That's why we have so many unix/gimp machines and a small corner with a few macs and photoshop, etc. (Oh and BTW- The cost of the hardware on one of these Mac machines is entirely insignificant compared to the price of the software load they require...Holy CRAP that's pricey...)
Formerly known as 98Lite. It Removes what you don't want to install, before its installed. At least it did when it was 98lite. I haven't checked out the more recent versions for win2000 and winxp, but they look pretty good too.
I think this one really strikes true at a subtle point... Why do people do this? For the money? Possible, but unlikely statistically.
This is Art. And the people writing the code are the artists. Coders code cause they have an itch to scratch. Scientists do the same thing. Engineers likewise, as well as thousands of other professions and hobbies. Its kinda a basic need to do something beyond the bare fact of existing, and linux is a very conducive medium to work in for a coder (of any skill level).
That Phrase "State of the Art" isn't just a saying.
Yeah- I noticed that when I switched to the tab I had it loading in and got a big page full o text.
Pretty simple though- I just hit "Save Page As...", popped it to my desktop with the right extension and there it was. Pretty cool looking pic. (Not everything needs to happen IN the browser, y'know...) And thanks again Mozilla!
Yes- It looks nice. As does the latest version of os9, that some of us are still forced to use at work... And I will GLADLY trade that look for some Memory protection and stability...
I realize that a chunk of this is probably referring to OSX, but I have to throw it out there anyway, and god-rest-their-servers... Mac Killed my inner Child.
Macs are responsible for 95% of the cursing where I work. Yes, they're loaded down like pack-mules, but it still just don't seem right...
Hey-- I feel compelled to respond as I have the exact same hardware setup you quoted and am in the same position...with one exception... I yoinked out that dang ATI card a long time ago. From what I know, those VE cards were basically castrated from the get-go by ati so they only support piddling little resolutions, and their quality control in hardware (Piss-poor) was only surpassed by their evilly inadequate Drivers and support software (MMC). I can't bring myself to use that card at all anymore, as I don't like hard-locking my computer that often. (Under several OSs I've tried) And Yes- From what I've heard, most bttv cards are not that much of a PITA to set up in linux, and they run fairly stably... Just not Ati's stuff. SO- I basically decided not to touch any of their stuff again. Too much hassle. (And what's wrong with cookies for breakfast???)
You can say "I could use it Like a giant magnifying glass with our Sun and burn away planets like Ants on the sidewalk! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH...."</EVIL LAUGH>
I supose that's more "evil" than "Scientific" though...
Most of "we" don't-- Hands Up: Who Runs a Non-MS OS?
I think that study of it could lead us to some Anti-Muscle-Wasting therapy for People living in space. I know the bone density thing is also a problem, but one thing at a time.

Woo-Hoo! They made it into Space (Or so Dick at Mojave on CNN reports...)
Mike is down safely, too!
Make way for the Next thousand ships!

You mean something like that final uber-plan from 'Fight-Club'?
I suppose you wouldn't need to take down the entire building to take out all the credit information...
I suppose those companies have a bit more security than average, though...

You poor soul... ;-)
Let me introduce you to my friend in the windows world when I need to go there...

That's my vote for MVP on Windows...

Hmmm...How about 10 Kg of custom mixed Toner. I'm thinking red or maybe green... I suppose it would look like a paintball target...
I haven't played Northland, or even heard of a game of that name for that matter, but the initial description reminds me of RUNE...
Anyone else get that feeling?
Yes- It looks nice. As does the latest version of os9, that some of us are still forced to use at work... And I will GLADLY trade that look for some Memory protection and stability...

And of course, the Japanese-to-english translation... Thanks Babelfish!
Nah-- That's no Problem at all! Just get a UPS!
I Suppose you'll also need a UIS (Uninterruptable Internet Supply) as well...
Of course there is...
