  1. Phase 1: ditch the iPod on The Urban Geek As A Mugger Magnet? · · Score: 1

Really, you're creating your own problem here. Get rid of the iPod. Nothing screams out easy target like seeing someone listening to earphones. You're instantly giving up on one of your five senses (Granted, your sense of smell and touch probably won't help you defend yourself from a mugger....)

iPod's are a muggers dream. "Hey, not only is that guy not paying attention to his surroundings, but he's also got some sort of portable media device that i can pawn. Bonus!"

Aside from that, paying attention is your best defense. Expect to get mugged. Walk around with the sort of paranoia that comes from smoking too much weed in your friends basement while his parents are home. "Is there someone in the bushes? I don't know man!"

And don't bother fighting back unless you've got a serious advantage. Yeah you want to fight back and bust that guys head open, but you really don't know.

Hindsight is a bitch in those situations. You may feel like a tard for giving in, or you may end up with brain damage or a serious limp for fighting back withsomeone who has waaaay less to lose.

  3. Hybrid Performance on Hybrid Cars Don't Live Up to Mileage Claims · · Score: 1

Hybrid owners: How's the acceleration in a hybrid vs. a normal 4 banger? Is it really that slow? A recent motorweek profile of the hybrids touted the Prius' sub-ten second 0-60 time as being above average. I was disgusted. ten seconds to 60? That'd be impressive, if I was on foot. In a car, trying to merge onto a highway, that's scary / borderline unsafe.

For those in the Ann Arbor area: Imagine trying to merge onto I-94 east bound from Jackson ave in a vehicle that takes that long to get up to speed.

The intersection above is laid out as follows; The on-ramp to the interstate is perpendicular until just before the merge. You need to brake down to 25-30 (during drought conditions. any rain/snow and it's 15), make a harder than average turn, then get up to highway speed in a very short distance.

Oh, did I forget to mention that 94 is only two lanes at this point? There's a (well-abused)concrete median, on the left. Let's not forget that the whole interchange sits behind a hill, making it a blind curve. And there's a bridge that starts just past the end of the on-ramp.

Now try that merge in a Prius. Or one of those three cylinder metros. Merges don't make me feel guilty about having a V-6, and make me wish for a V-8

GM offers a chip upgrade as part of a supercharger kit it sells for the Pontiac Vibe, a small car that's popular with street racers. Films like "2 Fast 2 Furious" have inspired young auto enthusiasts to buy cheap "tuner cars" like the Vibe, and muscle them up.

The vibe is many things (chief among them is ugly), but it is definatly not cheap. There are a lot of other cars that better fit that class of vehicle. The Vibe is just a Toyota Matrix with a Pontiac nameplate. It looks "young and hip" but few of those who fit the "young and hip" catagory can afford them outside of a lease.

Not to be alarmist or crude but Where the fuck do you live? Here in comcast country (michigan) where your cable choices are comcast, comcast, comcast, comcast, or, if you're lucky enough to live in an outlying area, comcast, 40-45 bucks a month is the norm. That's pretty close to direct TV rates. 45 bucks a month, plus equipment fees puts them at least in the same ballpark with the Digital cable and DirectTV rates.

I'm not going to play the "I threw my TV into a fire 15 years ago then cleansed my soul in a pagan ritual" card (which I'm sure will be repeated ad naseum), though I will say that it's getting harder and harder to justify what I'm paying now vs. the 'entertainment' I'm getting. If it weren't for local sports (Detroit's baseball and Hockey teams are only shown on Fox sports net, a cable channel. Thanks Mike Illitch.), discovery, history, and speed, I'd pitch cable entirely.

I have the same back and forth argument with myself when i think about buying a larger TV. Sure a 27" sony flat screen would be nice, but lately it seems like the money would be better spent installing a bay window so I can get a nice view of the city dump.
