I've got a better idea - why don't we create a.kids domain, and you can set up a profile so that's the only top level domain your kids can access?
Here's a clue: The Internet is not for children. It never was meant to be. Give them their own domain and stop worrying about seeing someone shat upon.
I saw plenty of raunchy filth on BBSes back in the day and I turned out just fine.
And if you spend years making a car on the promise that you'll sell a hundred of them. And then sell one to a person who makes exact copies of it... well you probably wont make any more cars, will you? Yes, at that point, technology will have reached a point where that business model has become outdated... this is basically what happened with video games, music, and movies. So these monolithic corporations need to adapt, change, or abandon their business models.
You can get them from ebay, half.com, used record stores, everywhere. I never pay more than 9.99 for a CD, which is what a DRM crippled album at a poor bit rate costs at iTMS.
You can rip them at any quality for any device, resell them, and you aren't hosed if your hard drive dies.
It's actually quite easy, particularly if you have a phone eligible for their "unlimited" data plan like a Treo or something similar.
Sign up for their "unlimited" data plan, plug in your phone, get a nice big SD card, and download like crazy. They'll get rid of you as a customer within 10 days and release you from your contract.
Just so you all know, their "unlimited" data plan does not allow you to download music or video... You can do it, but it's technically against what they authorize.
Go return it wherever you bought it, say it won't play, get one brand new and shrink-wrapped. Then return it the new shrink-wrapped one to the same store, or take it to WalMart/Costco and say it was a gift.
I know this may sound like flamebait, but I'll say it:
The only way we'll be able to even come close to Kyoto standards, and the reason that those eco-friendly French are able to do so, is by going nuclear. The coal plants we currently utilize create more pollution and more radiation (yes, radiation) than equivalent nuclear plants would.
So what's it going to be, you technology savvy hippies? Kyoto and nuclear? Or no Kyoto and no nuclear?
A couple of facts:
1) Automobiles account for 5% of the pollution in this country. SUVs make a very small percentage of this number - remember that the next time someone starts harping on SUVs.
2) Airplanes pollute an automobile equivalent of a 30,000 mile trip with each flight. Think about that the next time you book a flight.
3) The cost, energy and materials that currently go into solar panels actually create more pollution than that solar panel will save in it's lifetime. Hopefully further advances in solar technology will help.
4) The truth is - we're running out of oil. For the rest of our lives, oil is going to go down in supply and up in demand. Nuclear is our only choice.
Anyone who regularly reads sfgate.com is well aware of this. He isn't a columnist, he's merely someone who rants. He douses his opinions in an obnoxious blend of metaphors and run-on sentences, and many of these opinions run contrary to common sense or scientific evidence.
Sometimes it's SUVs, usually it's Bush, this time it happens to be Windows.
Rather sad that he landed on the front page of slashdot, IMO.
So why are you making car payments if you're in such dire straits? Wouldn't it make more sense to get an old Honda for 1500 or so and leave it at that?
Although Lotus Notes has a UI that most users don't like, it runs circles around the alternative mail platforms in terms of workflow and customization. If they can somehow coordinate their efforts here with what they already have in Lotus, maybe we'll be saved from an Outlook work yet.
I read somewhere that EA has used Madden to predict the superbowl, and they were correct something like 6 out of 7 times.
If enough variables can be factored in, and this probably won't happen with consumer level games or software any time soon, I'd imagine that software could be developed capable of predicting a high percentage of games correctly. They will never be able to get 100% accuracy, but 90% is possible in our lifetime and enough to win some nice money (60% to 70% accuracy) shouldn't be too hard to achieve with a nice beowolf cluster.
I'm sorry - but are we supposed to take a post like this from a guy named "EvilFrog" seriously? Or are you just an avant-garde troll, using a post-modern technique of pretending to be an ubergeek?
"The difference is we call one a pimply-faced 16-year-old working so he can smoke weed on the weekends, and we call the other a professional field engineer."... who smokes weed and/or drinks every night.
It was actually noticed by a friend who posted it on a different message forum. That's a good point, and I'll ask him why he even noticed it in the first place.

Who would think that a dead browser being released on a dead operating system would call for such little commentary?

In any case, the most obscure error messages I routinely get are error numbers that the lazy programmers I work with don't associate with a letter. I'd rather have the level of detail the author of this thread received than any more "Error #27"s that I have to track down manually.
I guess that's why coders often don't comment their work - it's job security!
Sorry kind sir, but you're utterly full of shit on this one.
Talking on a cell phone is in no way anymore dangerous than fiddling with a CD player, changing radio stations, or talking to other passengers. These "numerous studies" you mention either don't exist or are likely quite biased.
Statistics can prove any aspect of any argument, as can "numerous studies".
I think having conversations with passengers is easily more dangerous, as anyone here can agree with me on, because you are more likely to make gestures or attempt eye contact.
As for radios - no one "listen[s] to radio only". They often channel surf whenever commericals come on, or they fast forward or skip songs on their radios.
And don't get me started on kids. I have nothing against kids and obviously they can't be banned, but I have seen more people distracted while driving by their offspring than cell phones at all.
When I went to see Storytelling, the new Todd Solondz movie, this one guy in the theater had his phone ring. He answered. Not in a hushed tone, and not to say anything like "I'm in a movie, can't talk" and hanging up.
He spent several minutes talking at a fairly audible volume saying things like "Nothing much, just watching a movie".
The audience was hissing at him, shushing him, and finally someone shouted "Would you please get off the fucking phone?"
The guy kept talking for another minute, then got off the phone, then took off. Needless to say, it fucked up that part of the movie pretty badly.
Because not enough people have the common courtesy to TURN THEIR PHONE OFF during movies and performances, perhaps a nice stiff fine of around 250 - 500 dollars per incident would keep things under control.
Banning cell phone use in cars is just stupid. Maybe it's because I'm from the bay area, but using a cell phone while driving is a god given right as far as I'm concerned, as long as you remember to pay full attention to the road. If they're going to ban cell phones while driving, they need to ban radios, conversations and other passengers altogether, especially children.
All of these can be more distracting than cell phones.
I didn't find this funny. In fact, I found it very obvious and cliched.
Do you guys really find this funny?

Wrong.
You've been brainwashed by the RIAA/MPAA. The entire business model needs to fail for artists to ever see the money they're due.
You know what percentage of a CD sale goes to the artist? Would 5 or 10% tops surprise you?
