I prefer to enable "Load links in Background", and disable "Hide the tab bar when one tab is open.". Also I check all three options under "Open tabs instead of windows for:".
Anybody know why this killer feature is disabled by default?
See, my main problem with Flash is this: it is a user hostile program. There are no controls to disable Flash temporairly, or even stop an animation from playing.
If I were so inclined, I could disable JavaScipt, Cookies, ect. in my browser. Why should a plugin be any different?
Until Macromedia makes their plugin user friendly, there is no way in Hell it will run on my browser. I just feel sorry for Joe Public, who doesn't know what is the source of those annoying skyscraper ads on Yahoo.
Not to mention the fact, of course, that Nintendo has done very little to stifle any actualy competition in the console market (outside of the average, everyday stuff, of course). Price fixing and required licensing of third party software is fairly standard.
Yes, but is it fair? Before Nintendo, there was a free market in videogames.
A developer could port to any system they wished, at their discretion. Now it has become the norm that the developer must pay the hardware vendor for the priveledge to write software for their system. This approach opened the door to price fixing and non-compete clauses in the videogame market, in addition to stifiling homebrew development.
I know that many Slashdotters grew up on Nintendo, but *they are* the Microsoft of the videogame world.
That does make sense, I had forgotten that the old color assignment method only allowed hex. And I understand about the lack of space for both numbering systems on your chart.
It would be nice if the chart was available in hex, tho. I for one find that hex colors are easier to work with, perhaps due to familiarity.
In contrast, I'm still trying to figure out how to get flash to work with Mozilla.
Personally I will not run Flash, due to the many annoying advertisements using it. However, if you must have it, you can just use the Netscape plugin..
Thanks for reminding us all of the reasons NOT to have ActiveX controls in a web browser.
To all the folks who claim to not see sites using ActiveX scriping, I don't think you are looking hard enough. First, you need to disable all ActiveX in the security settings. Next, go to mail.yahoo.com, log in and witness the browser's warning message pop up.
Let me tell you a little story about what happened to me when I cancelled my AOL subscription.
In late January of 1997, I cancelled the credit card AOL was billing to. Next, I cancelled the AOL subscription itself. (note that I spent at least an hour on hold, waiting for a live operator) Next month, I had a little suprise on my credit card bil.
AOL had charged me for an extra month of service, because supposedly I was one day into the billing cycle when the account was cancelled. The part that burns my ass is that the card was cancelled and they were STILL ABLE to place a charge on it. (never get a Bank One card, by the way) I attempted to dispute with said credit card company but they refused to reverse the charge.
Therefore it suprises me not at all that they would do this to their users. IMO, AOL is a ripe target for class action.
..other copyright protection schemes built into its hardware..
Nitpick: Copy protection is something which physically restricts the ability to copy.
Copyright protection is a concept by which many lawyers keep themselves employed.
I am looking forward to the first consumer aparatus that automatically skips all commercials. It should not be that hard to recognize commercials.
Yep. Just look for the sharp jump in audio gain, and you're in commercial. Does anyone else hate this practice? Ever catch yourself talking louder than normal to be heard over the commercials? They should make TVs that detect that jump in gain and auto-mute.. could be a very popular feature.:)
Guess I'd better get cable TV, so I don't have to watch those annoying ads. Wait a minute, cable has commercials after all! That was just a lie so that people would adopt it. At least the premium channels won't have those annoyances. Opps, now they do!
I can notice it when they speed up music. Haven't noticed it lately since I don't listed that station anymore. (Station was "ROCK" 103.5 in Chicago)
It bugged the hell outta me, and my peers coudn't tell the difference. (but then, they also didn't know the difference between 2/4 and 4/4 time for that matter)
Maybe, but that's a problem with shared bandwith. Anyway, the cable company has no business behind my router! I'm already paying $50 a month for their service, if they want to start this BS I'm leaving for DSL immediately.
"You people must realize - consoles DO NOT crash. They don't release games or hardware that crash!"
I can't tell if you're trolling, or simply haven't played many video games. Let me assure you that console systems do crash, there is no guarantee that code is perfect. Obviously there is more effort to reduce bugs in a fixed enviroment, but it is impossible to have perfect code all of the time.
Nice example there, Mr. Salon.com article writer. Don't you know that Real(tm) products have an exceptionally predatory nature for taking over file extensions? I shudder to think that some court would order Real(tm) Player onto the Windows desktop.
Personally I think that their products stink: the audio/video quality is poor, and the UI, well.. it blows. But the bottom line is that Real(tm) products are 10X worse than most other applications for file associations. (Not to mention that the default setting for their programs leaves them running all the time for no reason!).
Then we all realized that Slashdot holds not a collective opinion on any topic.
FuzzyHow to enable tabbed browsing in Mozilla

FuzzyAre you serious? My company tried to inflict MS Project on us. All involved grew to dislike the entire thing immensely
It lasted for all of two months, until the manager who suggested it got thrown out..

FuzzyWrong, Flash (SWF) is a closed source API from Macromedia. I believe you might have gotten SWF and SVG mixed up..
FuzzyAh, but does it affect them?
FuzzyThe Kernal of the Commodore 8-bit line is actually an acronym: Keyboard Entry Read Network And Link
This Commodore Kernal is really the OS of the machine. It is separate from the Basic interpreter and screen editor.

FuzzyI do not understand why you are using the deprecated font tag for your hex example, when you may use either hex or decimal in style sheet definitions?
E.G.
<span style="color:#d2ab4d;">
I found it odd that the color chart only has decimal representation.

Did you know that Mr Kellow was a big proponent of male circumcision?
In light of this fact, maybe now we know what they do with all those foreskins? :P
Fuzzy- For the record:
- flash: don't want
- shockwave: see flash
- java: mostly harmless
- noisy web pages: don't want
- quicktime: don't want integrated
- real player: don't want integrated
- vrml: you've got to be kidding..

Fuzzy> those encoders (or whatever they are) that put > that logo down in the corner are actually quite expensive.
Really? My crappy Amiga 500 can do real time video overlay, no problem. Somebody tell these networks execs they're being ripped off.
And for the record, I find the logos quite helpful when channel surfing. Perhaps these bozos only have a handful of channels?
