  1. Re:In support on Microsoft Responds to IE Criticism · · Score: 1

You know, I just installed XP the other day to play some games, and I was doing some browsing while I was running Windows Update. I must have gotten hit with requests to install adware ten times in about ten minutes! What I really like about non-IE web browsers is you don't even get asked to install that stuff. That's worth it to me.

If you're a guy and you're hugging your other male friends, you're either gay or a sad example of masculinity. What is with people these days? Twenty years ago, that sort of thing just wasn't done. Now we've got to "be in touch with our feminine side" and be sensitive men, and some have stooped so low as to hug one another. No thank you.

However, you did say you took a couple of dance classes in college, and a relaxation class where you gave massages. I see where you're coming from. You must be a VERY sensitive male. If you're a female, this comment can be ignored.

I used to report spam more diligently than I do now. Nowadays my filtering does a pretty good job, and only occasionally when I am bored do I report spam. And I've given up on the Chinese spam. Those servers have admins who don't care. I used to think maybe it was the language barrier, but they must get enough e-mails with the word spam in them that it's got to be a word they recognize. So I think it's just people are reporting less spam.

    1) reinstall
    2) buy software at the store

4 is easy for people like /.ers, but almost impossible for average folk, like my parents. 2 really shouldn't be encouraged, ever.

Why not tell them to buy software? Wouldn't it be a good idea to get these infected computers some antivirus software? I work at an ISP, and we handle zombie spamming PCs by first sending them a notice saying that their computer is infected with a virus, and if they don't clean it, they're cut off. In a while, they are. Or they call us, and we tell them to go to the store and buy some antivirus software. I don't know why you don't think that buying AV software should be encouraged. It's the most logical idea for an infected PC. That's what the software is designed for, getting rid of viruses. And it's easier for customers than all three of your other ideas.

  13. Good idea. on RIAA Protests Digital Radio · · Score: 1

That's interesting. There are a few things that I think would have to be worked out, though.
    1. Is it going to be a record label? Or just a collective of home recording artists? If I were in a band, and I had to choose between a record label which would promote me and a collective which would rely on donations and word of mouth, I'd pick the label. Since I would want this to be my job, I'd want to guarantee myself some money rather than just rely on the goodwill of others.

    2. The bandwidth issue: don't just encourage the artists to help pay with bandwidth, their priorities are paying their own bills, not the organization's. You have to MAKE them pay for the bandwidth by setting up the payment structure properly. I've known people who are in touring bands. When they tour, the goal is to leave the show with enough money for food and gas. Laundry and showers next. Fat chance they'll be paying for your bandwidth voluntarily.

    3. People without internet access who enjoy music. You're alienating a large part of the prospective audience if you just distribute via the internet. Another reason why a conventional label wins out. A regular record label can put CDs in stores and press them for the band to bring on tour. The internet cannot, or would rely on the artist doing that work themselves. Not convenient.

I think the best way to do this is to do it like Emusic.com, where they have set up deals with record labels to sell access to mp3s of bands who have a record label deal already. That way there are CDs in the stores and mp3s being sold. And you don't have to rely on the generosity of the community to download files, as you would with BitTorrent. The "alternative path" that you are thinking of MUST include CDs in stores, or some kind of kiosk sort of device, so people can easily get a hold of albums. But I agree, more choice is good. I think there is a decent alternative, though, and that includes independent record labels. I think Warp Records has it right, offer digital downloads as well as provide a good distribution system for brick and mortar stores.

I hope this newfound popularity doesn't cause the libraries to neglect the books. At my college, this happened. They hyped their new "information center" and talked about how high-tech it was, but all they did was replace the books with connections to the internet. It's hard to write a paper when the best reference you have is the Internet. The information is so sparse on the Internet, compared to a book which tends to have pages and pages on a topic. Luckily, I was on my way out when I transferred there and never needed to write any heavy-duty papers on anything that wasn't computer-related. Books beat out PCs any day.
