    Actually, no. Somebody else laid down the cash to turn Linux into Linux (tm), who then tried to extort money from anyone using the word. Linus and others managed to get the trademark defeated.

    Are you sure? I think that NetBSD is the most widely ported OS.

    This is being released so soon after the big CSS leak, and suspect that's no coincidence. Perhaps with that bit out, they can release enough to play DVD's without breaking NDA.

    One thing: Is there any official confirmation from Creative that these drivers will be released, since they aren't out yet, and we only have linuxgames' word on this?

    You seem to imply that a contract is a contract no matter what. That's just plain wrong from a legal point of view.

    Some notable exceptions in the common law:
    - A contract entered into for the purpose of committing an illegal act is null and void.
    - A contract entered into by a minor is null and void.
    Actually, IANAL, but I've heard that a minor can enter into a contract, but said minor can back out of the contract at any time.
    - And especially... a contract which nullifies your ability to make a reasonable living is null and void.
    Also know that the judge has wide discretion here since this is a common law case and no written law is involved. While he has to follow precedents from higher courts, the rest is up to his own judgement.

    I'll second this one. Although the movie isn't centered around computers, they do play a fairly important role. (An idol singer turned actress discovers that somebody has a website about her, which shows a disturbing knowledge about her, and there was email being sent around.)

    Also, they also mentioned that the average uptime was 318 days, and that one had been running continuously since it was turned on in April 1998. I don't think RH 5.1 was yet available, and considering all the trouble that RH 5.0 had, I can understand them skipping that release.

    Man (Woman would be more appropriate in this case) of the Century: either Admiral Grace Hopper (inventor of FORTRAN, the first non-assembly programming language, which is a big part of why computers are so pervasive)

    I thought that she invented COBOL, not FORTRAN.

    xanim loads the entire AVI into memory first, decompresses every frame (requiring enough memory to store all the decompressed frames which probably causes your computer to swap), and then plays it back.

    Try "xanim +f <filename>"

    That works just fine for me. (I've played 20-30 Mb files with instant startup.)

    I don't know about the extra pixel copying thing, though.

    I had the same problem at one point; I fixed it by getting an RF modulator (about $30), so that's not really an advantage of Beta.

    However, you can tape DVD->Beta, and not get Macrovision troubles, which is cool.
