  1. Software Bundle Fun on Taiwan Forces MS To Cut Prices, Unbundle Software · · Score: 1

Ok, the practice of unbundling software seems pretty nifty in theory. I don't really see a point for Microsoft to do that -- "big bad monopoly" aside. Office XP is indeed overpriced, but how many corporate offices only need/use Microsoft Word, but not Excel or Access? Something smells fishy in Taiwan.

Hell, if I could pick and mix my Operating System, that would be pretty swank. I'd do away with all of the included applications outside of notepad (force of habit.) Final price for JUST the Operating system itself? 10 dollah. It last long time.

The Taiwanese build everything from my alarm clock to my TV, why are they bitching about OfficeXP and piracy? Why can't they code up TaiwanOffice?

Unbundling MS Office won't change the fact the majority of the Asian countries always have and always will pirate software. For many people in these ancient lands, piracy is how they get their income.

Now, for all of you MS haters -- you should be happy that the Asian people can make a living off of raping Microsoft!

The stability of the two operating systems is really a moot point these days. Both OS's are stable! (This is of course NOT referring to Windows 98 or Redhat 5.1.)

We need something more compelling for Slashdot's "news" postings, for example -- a discussion on the War.

So I was on IRC the other day and some guy messaged me asking if I wanted to buy a tricked out laptop for 250.00 -- I was skeptical and asked why it was so cheap. The guy's response "I use stolen credit card to purchase laptop." I then asked if he accepted COD. He said COD didn't work since the laptop was shipping out of Jersey City and he was located in Russia. Not shady at all.

Yeah, I think the cards have already been used fraudulently. Luckily I'm like the dude from "A Beautiful Mind" when it comes to my bank statements.

Yup, since I am the best friend mentioned in the article, I decided right my wrong and moderate this insightful.

As for Windows problems? I have none. Haven't had any Windows-related problems in well over 4 years. Now, driver problems, that's a whole new can of worms. Poorly written drivers does not define the operating system.

As for my "tricked out" computer, it's called a 35.00 case w/Window with a 15.00 cold cathode light. Now, if I can have that kind of glitz and glamour on an Apple for just 50.00 more sign me up.

My system costs a quarter of what today's Apples are going for, and it's pretty damn fast by today's standards.

Ok, Nintendo games, and in fact most games have a strict clause about copying/distributing and using for a public viewing.

Blockbuster does not copy the games that they rent out, nor does a Library. I think that this plan while good in theory, just won't make it in execution. Yes, information wants to be free, but not intellectual property of conglomerates?

The other issue that I can clearly see is Nintendo or any other gaming company wanting to have the peace of mind that the copies being distributed are in fact, legitimate copies.

For all they know, the people behind the company could have mass downloaded the finite Nintendo roms from any number of sites and said "Yeah, we own it." Who is to prove otherwise?

I have to say, I totally agree with your thinking. Why is everyone crying foul when Britney or N'Sync don't make that extra 50 million due to piracy. It's not like they aren't already completely well off.

If the music is indeed GOOD, I will support the band. In fact, I see no reason for having record labels, other than the fact that they provide an initial investment to get the record going. In this case, the label should get a return from CD sales, etc up TO the amount shelled out to get the record launch, plus a market interest rate for the amount of time it takes to get a decent return from the sales.

Fuck the rich getting richer. I think that if a musician makes 200K/year that should be considered good -- especially compared to other occupations that pay significantly less for more brainpower and work. If you have the voice, how hard is it REALLY to make music? Not that hard.

The fame alone should be payment.

However, there is a breed of programmer that was not mentioned in the above article, I like to coin them the "Cut and Paste Coders." This breed of programmer likes to scour the net for code, and use them without giving credit to the program the code was lifted from. While immoral, could this be considered productive?
