    We have about a dozen different models and yes even if only one model had been effected it would have been a bad time. The point is that although it happened it's isolated. I have had it happen on linux before too and it was some off the wall hardware specific issues so very few were actually effected. {I eventually swapped hardware to something a little more mainstream because it was a reoccurring theme}

    Yes there was and as I read about it I thought "Oh crap, We have 40k systems that might be effected." but not one had a bsod so I was very relieved {because I have had an update go horribly wrong before I think it was around 2007 .Net 3.0 even though it only effected a small percentage of system it was still bad}.

    You are correct that SaaS has made so much more commercial software available. {but not all commercial software there are still niches where a solution a business is heavily invested in just doesn't have a linux option}

    Then there is still the problem that most users still have windows and as a business retraining is not something anyone wants to pay for so who ever has the market share will get used in business. {I think android is making sure that users are turning away from not just windows but also the desktop PC}

    Plain and simple if there is an emergency that needs my attention on the weekend or after hours give me a phone call {if I happen to be the person scheduled to be on call} but it had best be important because because it's paid above normal pay.

    Otherwise email is used for non time sensitive communication. When I read the email I will reply and give you some kind of expectation. {I get a lot of vague confused requests so "Please schedule a meeting where we can discuss it in further detail" is a common reply} Don't expect me to read email on the weekend while I'm out fishing or something it just isn't happening. {With the exception of a few VPs and Execs that appear to be consumed by email 24/7 this is the company culture}

    I was thinking the trolls would be the first to sign up and the first to complain when they were moderated, after all they are now paying for the right to post. This would likely scare off a lot of business where as a free site can moderate a user and not need to refund them any money while satisfying the heard.

    It might keep spammers away though... I imagine they would likely move on to another investment that didn't require cash up front.

    You are correct 1000 pages of documentation for 250 applications is not very much... either they are very tiny apps or the documentation is very limited.

    Don't most companies that develop large amounts of software usually employ documenters that are separate from the developers?

    Do you know any complex software that succeeded in avoiding documentation by having significantly improved usability?

    No. I have worked with software that has tried.... there is nothing more annoying.

     

    As a customer, how would you feel with a very simple product (much simpler than the competition but still a bit complex) that has no documentation?

    Sometimes simpler is better, but if it's simple enough to not require any documentation then it probably will not meet the users needs.

    Right you can design a vehicle with a blind spots that make backing up dangerous but you can't hang an air freshener from the rear view mirror or have a gps device suction cupped to the window so you don't get lost because it might obstruct your view.

    Many states have laws not directed specifically at a HUD on your window but at anything that obstructs the driver's view. Just like it's against the law to hang random stuff from your mirror you can't suction cup your gps to the window under the mirror because it obstructs the driver's view.

    It's 5 Ws of trouble shooting... you forgot Who.

    You are right a lot of jobs just plain cannot be automated away but I bet if you ask any seasoned sys admin they will show you a boat load of scripts that they run and watch while drinking their {insert caffeinated beverage} and reading /.

    I have gigs of scripts I've collected over the years that do all kinds of creating/disabling/moving/modifying AD accounts and custom reporting for ldap and various applications, even telephony related scripts. {gedi master?}

    I don't have any trouble believing a there is a annoyed programmer that has inherited a few java messes from recent grads or that he blames their education.

    My niece asked me to help her with her c++ class and I decided afterward that I might check out a c++ class at one of the local colleges but it's not offered in any of the three colleges in my area they only offer java. Apparently not all degrees are created equal.

    If you are Dad is the only DJ in 100 miles then you live in a very rural area. More rural than where I live in Kansas. I've been to very few weddings that have had a DJ that wasn't family or a close friend and the same with bands.

    If a friend was having a wedding reception and they needed a band or DJ I could have them a of about 5 bands and a dozen DJs that would do it for free.

    poorly defined (and constantly changing) specs

    Been there, done that, probably doing it again next week.

    I love it when some random project manager leaps into a commercial product only to find the requirements they shopped for when purchasing aren't the same as the business requirements. It usually has some hard to find out of the ordinary feature that was specifically requested and then is missing a couple common critical features that were not mentioned by the requester.

    doh! I've not seen it but i watched Josie and the Pussy Cats with my niece last night... if you haven't seen it it is a comedy about subliminal messages in pop music every time a new song comes on what's cool changes orange is the new black or blue is the new orange and all the kids run to the mall to buy all new clothes that color.

    Statistics is an Applied Arts degree.. {The art of making numbers support your argument when they don't}

    Anyway tfa doesn't have enough information on how they classifying STEM and non-STEM businesses and positions to draw those conclusions.

    The largest numbers are managers at non-STEM businesses (22.5%), or having careers in education (17.7%)

    This does not explain how businesses are categorized or if education encompasses all education or excludes the obvious teaching STEM courses.

    Twice I've had that conversation and couple more times I didn't because I already knew what they would say. I know plenty of guys that have been stalked by ex-girlfriends or woman they have worked with, it's not at all unusual. They call the guy over and over, inappropriately show up where he is, try to come between him and any other woman he has a relationship with, sometimes threaten or start fights with his girlfriend or wife. I don't work in a high profile job, and I've had stalkers, one even convinced me to move 500 miles away.

    This may happen more frequently to women but don't be deluded into thinking it doesn't happen to men either. It shouldn't happen to begin with.

    I don't have a smart phone... when it comes to choosing a new cell phone I want good battery life and the ability to make and receive calls. My current phone takes very little time to charge and will last up to 72 hours depending how much it's used. {not usually 72 hours because I rarely go that long with out a phone call}

    I was recently shopping for a car and the salesman was telling me about how you can connect your smart phone with bluetooth and all the amazing features. Finally he notices that I was just not interested and asks me what I would like in a vehicle. What was I looking for? transportation, decent fuel economy, warranty, gap, a care plan, enough room for the family.

    Trimmings are nice, but when they start to take away from the intended purpose, it's a problem.

    I was looking a cds the other day and found that printed cardboard sleeves were a few cents more expensive than the cheap slim line plastic cases with a paper insert. I wasn't expecting that so who knows it might be cheaper.

    When I was in school I was always excited to go to my science class because we did experiments.... unfortunately my kids never got to experience that due to, possible danger, funding, and insurance considerations all they did was read about it. {but they still have football}

    I would rather they bring back science to science classes...
