I've been reading slashdot since about 2004ish, and back then it was my one stop news site for tech stuff.
However, now, I only read it as a joke, a reminder of what used to be.
The editors are a joke, most of the articles put up aren't newsworthy and/or are very poorly edited/summarized.
And this new beta page? Absolute shit.
We get it, the current owners of slashdot don't give a single fuck.
I seriously doubt you hear us, but we hear you loud and clear.
I have no doubt that this beta page will be the straw that broke the camel's back, and long time members will leave in droves.
As much as I do wish this would be the case, I don't think it's going to happen.
On the other hand, ten years ago I thought myspace would be around forever, and we all know how that turned out.
When i think back to my elementary school, there was only one reason to visit the library other than to check out books, and that was to play games on the computers.
We had games like SpellevatorMath Blaster as well as some adventure game that constantly quizzed various knowledges that I can't for the life of me remember the name of.
(I wish I did because I never beat it and I'd love to go back and do such now)
The point is, there's many an educational game out there, and it's an easy way to get younger kids learning things they may not otherwise take interest in.
Remember back in high school where all the cool kids wanted alcohol because they were told they weren't allowed to have it?
It's the same thing. The US government is about to tell a bunch of nerds they can't have something, so they want it even more now.
This seems like a fairly broad statement. Despite what the horrible title says, people did NOT admit to "surfing the web" but "accessed the internet".
The only definition in this incredibly short article defining what that means is the following:
(e.g. check email, surf websites, etc.)
However, it doesn't say if they prefaced that when asking the question.
If they simply asked me, for instance "Do you access the internet while you drive?", my answer would be "Yes, yes I do!"
Using google navigator, maps, etc? That access the internet. Even if it's sitting on my dash the entire time without me touching it, I am, indeed, accessing the internet while I drive.
I have a feeling that, gasp, this study was purposefully skewed for shock effect.
And as per usual, slashdot took the bait.
This will only cause more needless deaths.
I don't even trust the TSA to scan for bombs properly, and now you want me to put GUNS in their hand?
This would make me feel incredibly unsafe, and I guarantee you it wouldn't be long before we hear of shootings started by these idiots.
The odds of an impact at that time are incredibly low — in fact, the chance it will glide safely past us is 99.99998%! But that hasn't stopped some venues from playing up the apocalypse angle.
A 1 in 5,000,000 chance of this asteroid hitting is super high compared to the 1 in 175,223,510 odds of winning the grand prize in the Powerball lottery, yet tons of idiots still line up to play.
Shit like this is becoming more and more frequent, consoles are shipped missing key features with updates promised.
If it's not right, don't ship it. If it's not ready, don't ship it.
A company I used to work for lived by these words, if only the rest of the world did. (and if only they did too, they kinda don't anymore)

This is what drew me to Steam, this is what keeps me buying from Steam while my ps3/wii/etc gather dust.
If they keep up the constant sales and fairly good games on the Steam Machine like they're doing now on PC, yes, yes they can.
I've been playing this game here and there since I saw their booth at AX...2...3 years ago? I can't remember.
It's an interesting game, and it is fun for a while, but the biggest problem is that there's not much to do.
The world is fun to explore, especially when equipped with jetpack/boots/whatever, but there's only so much of it.
Beyond that, it quickly becomes a grind, and as such quickly gets boring.
They introduced a good deal of dynamic events and such to try to keep it interesting, but they don't change much.
The end/world boss seems interesting, but every time I've attempted it the game lags so bad, seemingly due to the lack of optimization on the server end to deal with so many players in a compact space. I usually die long before I know what even hit me.
TL;DR: It's a good way to kill a little bit of time if you're bored, but if you're looking for a serious game to sink your teeth into, look elsewhere.
I use paypal daily, but only because the transactions I make through it are small and meaningless.
The second I do something like this where I have a large amount in there, I'm switching to another service.
I've been hearing horror stories like this since they froze the Paypal account of the dude who made minecraft.
CAPTCHA may be popular with with webmasters and others running different sites, but it's a source of annoyance to blind and partially sighted people — and dyslexic people and older ones — who often end up being locked out of important websites as they can't read wonky, obfuscated letters
CAPTCHAs tend to have an audio button where a string of numbers is read off to you.
Even Slashdot has a "mp3" button that reads the letters on the CAPTCHA off to you.
Doesn't that already help all the above people with issues listed here?
(Except possibly the "older ones", who may have hearing issues too.)

Throw more money we don't have at the problem and maybe it'll go away.

U.S. trademark on the use of the word 'candy' in games and clothing.
There's already people using this trademark without approval!
He didn't want anyone to know he was watching teletubbies. How embarrassing.

Has there ever been an MMO where grinding wasn't a requirement?

Apple also announced that the new version of Mac OS X (10.9 Mavericks) is available now and is free to all Mac OS X users
I'd check for a "Courtesy of the NSA" fine print.
And now with the updated number, so it's 1 in 50,000 odds of this hitting us, nearly 3,500 times more likely than a lottery win.
The odds of an impact at that time are incredibly low — in fact, the chance it will glide safely past us is 99.99998%! But that hasn't stopped some venues from playing up the apocalypse angle.

Nope, typical change to "CEO/Board says we're not making enough money, fire all the workers and ship anything that's even half ready"

It'll cost $500/month to use, to make it's other plans still seem like good deals.
New York tried this last year.
that building on others’ ideas always requires permission
Well shit, I guess all those games I played on the playground as a child were bad, i never once asked for permission to use them or add new rules.

News at 11.
(On a more serious note, the same thing happened to the extension FB Purity.
"unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots are not 'radio communications' that are 'readily accessible' to the general public
Every single apartment complex I've lived in/visited would say otherwise.

Sometimes they say coffee is beneficial and helpful.
Or even sometimes they say it actually lowers the risk of death.
Other times they say it's horrible and should be avoided.
Can you please make up your minds already? |:
