All these improvements mean that any new laptop, includign iBooks can play Quake 3 in full res at a decent speed:) I guess that future Lan parties will be more and more wireless !
I know, this is offtopic but I'll bite. In France, you can be sued if you refuse to sell something to a customer. In our case, Slashdot sell advertising space and can't refuse to sell it to Microsoft. I guess, in the USA, OSDN could also be sued for refusing to put their banners.
> Has anyone else noticed? Perhaps this is why I have not bought a single PC game in at least three years now.
I bought a few : Q3 Team Arena (not that dark) and Unreal.
BTW, Doom was really playable and fun, just compare it with "Prince Of Persia" 1 where you had to minutiously hit your keyboard to walk (not run) or just fall in the first hole...
I only know one game which had a better gameplay : Commander Keen (4 to 6) by the same team.
So, I have to say your comment is quite trollish but you explain why : you're not addicted to this genre bvut rather to adventure games.
He actually says that Linux offers him some good flexibility and modularity and does the job but he also adds he's open to discussing other solutions with Microsoft and he also points aout that, in embedded appliances, nobody cares about the OS being run.
Before you actually get modded down as a flamer (I would not like it, your opinion on Bowie and Prince are not mine but it's your right, after all), I'd actually like to tell you that I agree on your final point:
I would like culture to be a participation event, not a simple manufactured mass-marketed commodity for those whose mentality is particularly ovine.
You're right. That's why I opened GNUArt where anyone may download my music.
Now, if somebody wants me to perform I'd like to get some bucks:-)
That's the same with computing : hacking Linux is good if people realize how good you might be otherwise, and would then hire you for "real".
I read computing books while travelling. I don't want to buy 20 batteries to be able to read them on a screen. I also don't appreciate to read on a screen. Paper just does it... and I don't have to uprade it whenever the software editor's CEO wants to buy a new house/ferrari...
You may not want to print these by yourself, especially if, unless you are a DTP professional) you don't have the required machines to have such a nice printout... For me the quickest way is to order it for my Company.
Well, Moby's 18 was lame, thanks to MP3 sharing, I could just avoid this expense. (I erased all since). But I agree with your comment. Here's a quote from David Bowie:
Shift Interview with David Bowie by John Turner, Shift, November 1999 - Has the so-called "MP3 revolution" had an impact on you?
Not even remotely. Revolution? I don't see it like that. It has been coming for a long time. I had a Rio last year! They've been taking my music and bootlegging my shows for ages. I know all the sites that have my bootlegs and all my MP3s. Actually, I don't give a flying fuck. I like the internet and I like the community. I think, to understand your presence on the net, you have to be a part of it and work within it. I thought it just looked so reactionary, for instance, of someone like Prince to clamp down on everything in terms of the lawsuits. You can't stop the sea from coming forward.
I heard about export limitations concerning computers... Now, if Gateway starts selling CPU cycles, how can they guarantee that this won't be used by organisations located in these embargo'ed countries ? Otherwise, if they can control this, this means they are selling some spyware... the CPU cycles are just a Trojan.
When you acquire something that has value without compensating the owner, that is Stealing. When you do it in violation of the current law, whether you agree with that law or not, that is Illegal.
I'd use the verb benefit, else, well, you can acquire immaterials good but if you simply don't use these, you're just using your hard disc as a dust bin.
When RIAA/MPAA will notice that the loss they consider is actually lower as their estimation because people politely accepted to be "given" mp3/divx but just don't like these and don't use these, this is not really theft, but rather some potential publicity for the labels.
I however agree with the term illegal : the problem is the law but not really the philosophy behind.
Of course, I consider that any mentally-equilibrated people who enjoy some "pirated" stuff will finally buy it unless it is not distributed a decent way.
I'll take the Star Wars 4-6 example: I will only buy these if they come alone in DVD (I mean I *refuse* to pay for episodes 1-3 which will dramatically increase the bundle price as these were more expensive to create -despite the obvious lower entertainment they are- and also will still generate big bucks because of their lower age).
Exactly, IIRC, Corel Office (previously Wordperfect Office) for Linux was running other some cpu-hog-emulation layer... So, I guess it'd be easy to port but... Do MS want this ? IMHO, they'd rather keep Exchange clients on Win*.* only so that their customers won't migrate.
I have not read the book but I somehow liked the first episode (especially the "balrog" or whatever this huge dude was named).
I'll then get and watch the second part. If I think it sucks, then they won't see me at the movies next year.
In this situation, also, if people ask for my advice, I may encourage them to get a DivX to make their how mind as, if it sucks, it is then not "DVD-able".
Another case would be Star Wars : I definitely liked episodes 4-6 but I just hate these crappy 1-2 (and probable 3) re-issues. I know they won't issue the 4-6 episodes separately in DVD and they expect most people to pay for the 6 episodes at once when they'll issue this shit-to-be collector's item edition, whatever bundle.
In this case, I'd be happy to get the DivX of the original 4-6 episodes.
I don't want to pay for some overhyped shit when what led me to see Star Wars was made around 20 years ago.
This could be the same for LOTR... If it sucked (except that I dont' try and obtain shitty movies...).
I own an iBook (oct2002 -> 800MHz).
Both Q3A and Team Arena run more than fine at maximum resolution !?
All these improvements mean that any new laptop, includign iBooks can play Quake 3 in full res at a decent speed :)
I guess that future Lan parties will be more and more wireless !
Is that they'll make iSync Zaurus compliant. :-/
-if you were in the gov, what'd would you do ? :)
-ask for credits
Hey, you could also use this water to power your PC (it'd however require you to have a huge Hoover-Dam-sized computer room ;-)...
:-)
After IP/Electricity you'd then get IP+Electricity/water
Well, most Mac have not had floppy drive for a while, and you can use any (understand : "Logitech" ;-) USB 2 button wheel mouse under OSX.
though it is a funny hack (sorta) I am not sure it could be optimally saving space on my desk...

What about Commander Keen and Miner Willy ?

Oh Contrare. That's French
:-)
He actually misspelled "Au contraire".
But I appreciate he suggest some slashdotter to "get a life"
They say it went at an average 75kmh (~45-50mph).
Previous article about SpamArchive.ORG opening...
OK, so they *must* change.
I suggest PhoeGNyX (in German, the "y" is a French"u").
Surveys indicate that very few people are willing to donate their face. Would you?"
I am planning to give any vital organs I may still have after I am dead but I refuse the reste to become consummer goods.
If people want a face, I guess plastic surgery is a better option.
