  1. Re:Solar-powered circumnavigation? Already done. on A Solar Race Around the World · · Score: 1

Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the wind "solar powered"? So humankind has been circumnavigating the globe in "solar-powered" boats for many centuries!

Note: I know some wind currents are driven by the earth's rotation, but the earth rotates because it's orbiting the sun, right? Still solar-powered! :-)

Well, technically EVERYTHING on Earth exists because of the Sun. Except for the tides, which exist because of the moon. But it exists because of us, and we, again, exist because of the Sun.

But I totally dig your point. And I think it's funny.

Perhaps this should be called "direct solar ...", as opposed to the indirect solar of winds and such.

  2. Re:Sony's strange plans, two-many-formats wars on Video Games and the Hi-Def Format Wars · · Score: 1

If Sony releases the PS3 way cheaper than any Blu-Ray player... How would the other Blu-Ray players react to this? Who would want to buy another Blu-Ray player if the PS3 is the cheapest one and it is also a next-gen console, allegedly the most powerful of all?

Well I don't know that it will be "way cheaper than any Blu-Ray player", looking at the PS2 vs the average DVD player. The PS2 cost twice as much, easily, as a suitable DVD player.

Also, consoles don't make good DVD players. At least the XBox and PS2 did not. They're missing a few features. Like an LCD on the console, and a quality remote. I understand the XBox 360 and PS3 will have both these things, but they can't possibly be cheaper than a stand alone HD/Blu-Ray player.

They're designed to play games, not movies. They will play movies, but the user experience is about as good as playing video games with your DVD player and remote. It's all about the right tool for the job.

Additionally, jukeboxes and changers are becoming more popular, and I'm pretty sure Sony won't be making a 300 disk PS3 (:

  3. Re:Apple has been a leader in addressing this prob on Apple's All-Seeing Screen · · Score: 2, Interesting

You can not give Apple credit for camera placement. That's pushing things. Anybody can stick their webcam anywhere they'd like. Most of them come with either a way to stick them to something or clamp them on. Even my 6 year old Intel camera has a removable foot that has a sticky pad on the bottom in addition to its industry standard camera mounting bolt in the center bottom.

Apple's biggest innovation over any of the other technology companies is that they hired an advertising company that's worth a damn.

And yes, I dig that the iSight is firewire. But what I really want is a firewire keyboard that has a built in charging cradle for a wireless Mighty Mouse. There's no sense in a wireless keyboard, and there's no sense in replacing batteries.

Because I like Winamp better than iTunes, but I like to buy my music right now instead of going to Best Buy. I also like to use my AudioTron or my roommate's SqueezeBox rather than spend another $130 on another networked audio player.

This has been said about a kajillion times at slashdot - just because YOU don't need it doesn't mean it's a bad idea. There are over six billion people in the world - all it takes is one to create, and one to use.

But in general gaming on the internet sucks ass. Even really great automated networks like Halo 2 can be very laggy and quite unenjoyable. Also I don't find it fun playing with a bunch of people I don't know. I'd rather get a group together at a house and play on a LAN there. Or just play solo games.

There's quite an uproar in the Gran Turismo community because GT4 didn't go online. I could go for some online scoreboards, laptime leaderboard, and shared race replays, but I have little desire to race online. It just doesn't sound enjoyable.

Until we have 100mbit fibre to the house gaming online will be problematic and I have no interest in struggling to have a good time.
