  1. Conflation on Brendan Eich Steps Down As Mozilla CEO · · Score: 1

Everyone has seen what this topic has done to people. Flame wars, calling people reprehensible when they are obviously not bad human beings. Everyone hating someone else for their views and life choices. I honestly think most people have a religious problem mixing with a societal one. Once again, 'Marriage' should be a religious ceremony, and Unions should be legal rights. And legally everyone is held to the same standard. We've backed ourselves into this corner by saying that people should be married (see tax law, hospital rules) so we can't just get rid of it. But since laws can change a lot easier than the church, why don't we just change the wording? You don't force people to change their views, you don't force religion to change, and then you can honestly see who the people are who really do just want to deny freedom of choice to human beings.

Kidding aside, what's the difference when letting a grown adult decide where to spend the next decade of their life? We all die some day, and if the technology is there to support you, who cares where you want to do it?

Neat I guess, but not nearly as neat as if they'd modeled it after an original Zelda temple or something. Maybe not a water temple, if the fans are anything like my friends they wouldn't make it out without calling me first.

  9. Jumping to conclusions on USPS Discriminates Against 'Atheist' Merchandise · · Score: 1

A study conducted in this way could show that a box with custom "Atheist" label on the tape is treated differently than a normal box. Tons of people think this means bias towards atheists. If the study didn't start off with a confirmation bias, a different box would have had another, maybe "christian".

Otherwise this is just a study on adding extra designations to see if they affect the shipping in the US. Still an interesting experiment, but you have to realize what it is testing.

Besides, you're asking them to read an extra word. That is a built-in delay right there.

Apple has really gotten into everyone's heads. "You still have the older version of the OS? You must have vulnerabilities, then! You must upgrade to iOS5! Er, Android iOS5..." security patches are made through my Android even though I'm still on Gingerbread.

When it comes to Windows, everyone mods up using XP ten years later, but it's different with smartphones somehow? If there is a problem, it's not the lack of getting a new OS like many here have suggested (while that is frustrating it's not an option), it's the lack of pushing out security updates.

Science can explain a lot and not ruin it, poor writing however can ruin any movie.

So here's my problem with midichlorians. So science discovered they exist and that they are symbiotic with all life. This is common fact and everyone knows it and knows that is the driving factor behind the Force. That makes the Jedi less 'religious' and more just engineers. Little organisms, it's all explained and measured, these guys use it (why wouldn't a majority of people? who knows).

And then the Empire takes over, everyone forgets about these things and now being a Jedi is some ancient hokey religion based on belief but often rewarded? It's not only inconsistent, but it takes away from the magic of the force.

Way to ruin the Force for me.

Since you said PC and not just desktop PC I was thinking, when will we move past personal computers? I haven't given much thought, but it has to be when the computer isn't personal anymore, but your account is. Would people ever be comfortable using any dumb public terminal but carrying tiny drives or authentication sticks with you? I forsee this as an alternative to personal computing, but no sure how likely it actually is. If everything were to move to the cloud you could just plug in something you carry around on your keyring. Or storage gets to be so small then that's what you carry with you.

Not sure what could change what you use at home at all. Unless at home you just have the keyboard+monitor and a fast wireless connection and you connect to the fast super cloud. That wouldn't be a PC.

Not sure any of these are happening anytime soon....or at all. But what is a non-personal computer?

Actually, from steam you also get marketing. And it's only 30% of what you sell on there, not all venues, so it opens up a new market to you I'd say that's worth it. I'm willing to bet there are companies out there spending at least 30% on marketing. And it's pretty great marketing if that's your target audience. Just saying, I wouldn't count that as "little value beyond a billing system and content hosting".

On Steam you'd know if there were a Sequel or DLC coming out for a game that popular. And it's not 30% of all their sales, just sales made on steam, which still gets the word out to your buddies that may not have used steam to buy the game in the first place.
