If you use the net a lot, that means you transfer lots of MBs thru your adsl. You probably pay around $100. I use the net a little. I transfer more or less 5MB a day thru my crappy 56k dialup. Do you know how much that costs me per month? About $100. Even if my connection idles i still get to pay $100. Do you think that's fair?
If you drive a lot, you pay for a lot of gas and use the road a lot so you pay more (often) at those toll stations.
If i have my dialup idling i do not cost my ISP nothing (the phone company is another deal) except the occasional ping. That shouldn't cost me both my fucking arms and legs.
You obviously use your connection a LOT and you see that it isn't your best interest if they start charging by the meg.
I am not sure if there should be a charge for both up and down tho. i gotta think about that.
Because after having tried Redhad 5.1/7, Mandrake 7 8, Suse, Slackware 8.1 during the past 4-5 years, i found out that if i want to use my accessories and hardware, i have to use 98SE.
Because when i wanted to play divx5 content (i could play divx4) i had to download not only the plugin for XINE but also the new XINE version, the new alsa version and the new kernel.
Because when i got slackware 8.1 , thinking i finaly found the best distro (friends told me "it's tight" and i like that), i ran gpm, it froze, i ran startx it froze, only thing that worked was modprobe sb. I am not going to start reading manpages if issuing a simple command freezes an entire system. What am i supposed to do? reboot after every failed attempt at configuring my hardware? Yeah, that happens under windows too.
windows 98se are going strong on this pc (433celeron, 128M, 20G, geforce2mx, sbawe64g) for lots of years.
sorry folks, but this is what happened to me. This is my story. If you have not these issues i explained, i envy you. Wish i managed too. I really do.
"mplayer now plays sorenson V3! This is the last major format that was unplayable under linux and"
yay! like when i had to make my XINE play divx5! I only had to download the plugin, the new player version the new alsa version the new kernel version to play divx5! that's about 40M! yay! Not like crappy windows 98 that just required you to download the codec...pffft... if you don't have to rebuild your kernel to play new media content, it isn't an OS!
"2xsai actually guesses edges and fills in the pixels."
yeah! ZSNES can use that! There's Super Eagle mode too...both of these suck up CPU like peanuts
I once had this link to research done on cpus, which are designed from the ground up to be VERY low power. Consider this: they saved power at the *gate* level!
The submitter forgot about Euclid's elements. That one is even more important. Not only scientificaly but also paedagologicaly. However, we don't have the prototype. *sigh*. (IAAP:i am a physicist)
I am achieving scores >60K just by pushing the guy with full force with the initial settings (0,0). I once got >70K but at exactly that time i figured this bug... if you run the prog from a schortcut placed say on the desktop the internal scores tables aren't updated:(
anyway it wouldn't be hard to make the online score database bullet proof. just have the initial conditions uploaded together with the score:))
...my philips 107s monitor barfed just one month after its 3 year warranty. which is really fscking horrid as i have 14" adi monitors that still go after 10 years!!
Can someone find a way to make such units (monitors and harddrives) fail *DELIBERATELY* , but seemingly *UNDELIBERATELY* so we can get new ones for free?
yeah, that's lame... but isn't having a $300 monitor die after 3 years isn't? And what's the deal with the 1 year warranty on some very expensive flat monitors?!
I do not know who said it first, but he was probably so right it hurts... A warranty guarantees the product will fail right after the warranty ends.
I don't care about higher samplerates or bitdepths... what i want is simple and way more effective than 2416537.1 dolby schmolby stereoXPRLTZ whatever. Binaural for me and a pair of cans.
Macos x doesn't run in i386, and it is very limited as far as hardware is concerned (compared with i386 arch).
The "it just works...NOT" issue exists because the hardware existing for i386 is so vast you just cant take everything into consideration. It's a bloody mess.
Now, on the other hand... if you can tell me why STILL after so many years i have to configure my awe64gold by hand...
Because what we are asking for isn't that simple...for example: if you want an html renderer that follows the HTML rendering standards completely, then you must make it so it just refuses to render pages that aren't html compliant! So next time a page doesn't show up well under your web browser...run that page thru the validator...
I think it is mean to yell at the gecko programmers when their engine doesn't render non-compliant html pages!!
And on another note, rendering speed isn't all that matters folks... for me, IE might render faster, but everytime i ask it to open a link on a new window, the stupid IE opens a small window and i have to maximize it by hand... haven't found a way to maximize it by default. Also the goddamn popups which can be disabled with mozilla.
Mozilla might or might not render pages faster, but generaly it is a more pleasureful experience. (that sounds kinky)
What i'd like to see was a win32 native interface with the gecko rendering engine...basicaly, just how IE looks and feels but with all the mozilla niceties.
No matter what you do, no matter what measures you take, you can't constraint what you do or not do with computers.
It all started in a garage, as a hobby. If necessary, it will start again in a garage.
Those who love computers and the community created because (and with the help) of them can not stop to do their thing, irrelevant if it's moral or immoral, legal or illegal.
Computers are tools. No more, no less than your common screwdriver. "Clever" tools, yes, but what you do with them is *use* them.
I'm sick and tired of all these p2p-related/. stories. Please make the voices stop.
As a side effect (apart from showing the business practices of corporations) shows just how much scared m$ is running after (potential lost) customers.
I'd like this question answered...(i know it isn't possible to answer): What is the ratio of copied/original windows pcs out there? (all kinds of m$ windows, x86 architecture only). "Original" here means from each original m$ installation discs, the "legally" allowed installations on HDs. Anyway, you get the idea. That's the question.
Bad answer. Not wrong, just bad. There's a reason they asked that. If you could answer that question correctly it would mean that you know so much that you even know what year it was introduced.
How old is the one who has undergone the first LASIK operation? I'm asking this because it isn't very certain if there won't be implications, say, after 20 years.
I don't mind glasses but i'd love to "lose" my 5 (l) and 4 (r) degrees of myopia, however: who can give me solid advice whether this will be save in the very long run (more than a decade).
[offtopic comments: I've thought of the LASIK operation (in fact, in Crete is most of the research done, which is near me) and my parents have given me the green light&money for the operation, but i'll be staying with my glasses.]
for my machine, it just made IE crash. nothing more. 98SE.
Your comments are wrong.

They should just charge by the meg.
Anyone remember the RUnning comPUTER?

no, actually, the energy to turn "on" a gate is returned to the "power supply" when said gate turns "off" :) Very l33t i might say...
