Reminds me of an Agave plant we had out behind our house.

For my entire childhood it was just this big spiky Aloe like bush behind the house. About 5 feet tall. Then one time when I was in my late 20's it grew this absolutely gigantic spike about the height of a telephone pole, flowered, and then produced hundreds of little budding plantlets that fell off and took root. The original plant then promptly died.

I've been carrying one of these around for the last 6 months or so, and while it has its flaws, it's still a great device to have.

When I'm wandering around with a baby/toddler strapped to me/in tow, the last thing I need to be lugging around is more stuff, even the lightest of laptops, nor do I want to carry anything as fragile or expensive as a laptop.

On the other hand, all the coffee shops around here are temptingly WiFi enabled, and there are a plethora of open networks around.

Having this device comfortably stowed in my pocket means that I can get some surfing and email in while the little guy takes his naps, just about wherever and whenever that happens to be. If I'm out of range of an open Wifi network, bluetooth to the cellphone works just as well.

It might not be a desktop browser, but it absolutely beats the pants off of ANY browser running on a cellphone, and the 800 pixel wide screen is enough to open webpages without side scrolling.

The email client sucks. I've been using webmail which works just as well until the software update comes out.

This is not a consumer level device yet. I would probably best describe it as an open beta-test. But for the price and convenience it's a great thing to have around if you know how to work with it. That, and it can run nethack.

What I really miss from the old-school days is the *nix talk command. Yes I know people still use it, but I really find it striking how much contextual information can be carried in visually watching someone type characters out one by one and correcting their errors in real time. It really is different from the "compose and hit return" method most protocols use these days, and I find it really makes the interaction more like a conversation. Especially since you can both be typing and be reading things at the same time which is much like talking over each other.

  14. Re: ABBE Numbers... on On NTSC Video, Blue Blurring, Chroma Subsampling · · Score: 2, Informative

The difference you're seeing with glasses is due to the ABBE number of the materials.

Glass has the best ABBE numbers , but most people these days go for plastic lenses. The cheap CR-39 lenses actually have the best rating of the plastics, but they're also big, thick, and heavy. My guess is that a lot of people are wearing polycarbonate lenses, because they're light, have a relatively high index, and are VERY impact resistant. Downside? Really crappy ABBE number. I just switched to trivex lenses which have a slightly better ABBE number and there is a noticeable difference. (similar to polycarb in safety and thickness, can be drilled for rimless frames, but much better lens characteristics)

First of all, the camera does have a lens-cover. With 2 megapixels, the resolution is much higher than 320x200, I'm not sure where you're getting that figure from.

There are lots of people out there who have big pockets to carry around these things. (Both literally and figuratively.) Medical professionals for instance. The 2megapixel camera is a good enough resolution to take photos large enough to blow up for powerpoint slides, making this one an ideal companion for carrying around, using for drug/med references, taking pictures of x-rays, wounds, etc, along with typed commentary and then downloading them to a pc via bluetooth for putting into computer presentations and such.

Is there really so little going on the the world? That issue has been on the stands for at least two weeks now and that has to be the third or fourth front page item from it over the last week. Does it take that long to read through the issue and find the interesting bits? Perhaps we should just have a periodical posting titled: "Here are the headlines from the current issue of Wired."
