    In the US research is done for the DoD

    Well, first of all there are 2 types of research. The first is basic research that is mostly never profitable in the short run, reason why it is mostly universities that get involved in it.

    Secondly, there is advanced research based on results from basic research. This type of research can be very profitable when a company starts up and as time passes, it becomes a form of insurance for companies. Think of Xerox research labs, which was opened to help Xerox remain the Document Company in the "paper-less age" which so many people anticipated.

    DARPA, which is the defense advanced research focus on advanced research but the great thing about them is that they release great research projects to the people without having to worry about profits, as they did with the internet or as it was called at the time "ARPAnet".

    I refuse to do business with any bank that would require my eyes being scanned. While there are many thieves out there, most of the people are honest. If the bank can't prosecute thieves and care about a 300$ robbery that at their turn rob from honest people, I don't and won't sacrifice my freedom. There is a line to be drawn between who you are and what you have. This invasion of privacy crosses it by far too much.

    If Australian banks want to do it all the power to them but the reason is to dumb!

    Secondly, the idea reminds me too much at Minority Report.

    embargo keeps the prices down since Iraq is not allowed to sell the oil for profit only food and humanitarian needs

    How exactly did you figure that out? The more offer the offer goes up and the demand stays steady, the price always goes down!

    If you want some historical evidence, think about the Great Depression and what happend to all the goods that over-produced. They had to be thrown away so that the price doesn't fall under the cost of production.

    You can put a bulb in a very high diamater reflector which makes it thin in relation to how long it is but it doesn't make it flat!

    They do not charge for an extra machine, they charge for the extra IP.

    It seems like they would have to probe (invade) private equipment to determine the amount of machines behind the NAT. Is that even legal?

    I used a similar method to upack zip files on my old hosting provider's server.

    It is ok to improvise when you don't have an option but if you really want shell access, find a hosting provider that gives you ssh access. Changing your hosting provider is very easy. Just get hosting somewhere and point your domain name to the new DNS servers.

    The reason it takes so long for the updates to show up isn't the incapability of their system. The transaction shows up the first day and it disapears the day after.

    It is because they love to not let you know for sure how much money you have in your account and just in case you live from paycheck to paycheck and don't have a tight grip on your balance, you have high chances of overdrafting your account. They charge 29$ for every transaction you overdraw so if you have a let's say for 1$ transaction they would charge you 116$ for the fantastic service they provided to you by paying 4$.

    I hope this attack cost them a lot because they deserve it for fucking over people that struggle from day to day.

    They need to change their name to Gringotts Bank.

    Cryptonomicon is a very good science FICTION book. It happens in a different dimension and on a different planet which resembles planet earth in many ways.

    Encrypting data prior to writing it to the hard drive in order to avoid putting yourself at risk of disclosing private data would be an excellent benefit.

    Keeping a private key in a chip, which won't lose it (maybe 2 for redundancy) and having chips dedicated to encryption and decryption before hard drive operations could be a solution.

    Based on a previous article the data can be retrieved at the molecular level even if you overwrote it very many times. If you really want to protect your data like your customer's credit card numbers just don't ever write it plain text onto a magnetic disk.
