  1. Bnetd? on CDN Supreme Court Upholds 'Net Free Speech · · Score: 2

"Strike one for the little guy in Canada -- and maybe move here if you want to avoid the DMCA? ;)"

Interesting... maybe Bnetd should host their site and project on Canadian servers. Would that exclude them from the DMCA perhaps? It sure would make Blizzard work harder to get them shutdown =)

  3. $80 A lot? on Rogers Cable Plans Fees to Curb Bandwith Hogs · · Score: 2, Insightful

$80/mo is still an amazing deal for 3Mbit down and 640K Up, which is what cable speeds run at in Canada typically. Currently it's $39.99/mo for 2 Dynamic IP's and until now there has been no stipulation about the amount of traffic you're allowed run over your connection. (This is Canadian dollars we're talking about here so it's like a nickel for you Americans)

It could go up another $100 and still be a sweet deal compared to any "Highspeed Business" solution out there. It would cost you a lot more than $80 for a T1 or something of that variety.

As a Canadian, I firmly believe we have no right to bitch about Highspeed internet. We've got it made compared to many other countries in the world.

    Pfft.. $80.

You silly twit. The linux kit for the PlayStation 2 is right around the corner. You'll basically have a full sdk to tinker around with and write your own titles. You may not be able to distribute them on CD, but who does that anyway? Do it over the web via the included Ethernet adapter!

  7. This is scary... on MS Zone Users Must Use Passport Accounts · · Score: 4, Informative

Being a former manager at the Zone, I can honestly say this is a scary concept. While I was there, we desperately tried to resist even becoming a part of MSN, alas the powers that be just wheeled the Zone like any other product and made us a part of MSN.

Microsoft already tracks user information through the use of their Zone software. So much information, that it's almost like the Windows XP product activation. They ban users from their service based on a unique key generated by the Zone software that analyzes your hardware.

Slap this in with the fact that you use a credit card to access Asheron's Call and other premium services, they've got a good start on a personal profile for you.

They know what your system is made up of, they know your credit card number, they know your visiting habits, and if you use hotmail, they have your email by the proverbial balls. Short of owning your home, they own your online presence indefinitely. In the future if they integrate Passport with XBox, they'll be able to track your game habits, how many wins, losses even your game chats.

Chalk one up to MS for squeaking this one in on the Zone. I bet they resisted it with their very last bit of will power.

You make it sound as though Communities were like a dot com themselves, no money, no new features, no selling product to the client (community members) and the whole thing will flop.

No matter what the economy or state of the net is like, people will gather to talk and interact with each other about a common interest. They'll do it wherever they can and will return frequently providing the atmosphere and interaction keeps their interest. It's one of those circle of life things.

Gimicks and new features are nice, but established communities do not fall because the instant messenger is broken 9 days out of 10, they fall due to a stagnant atmosphere and lack of interesting and stimulating discussion.

  14. I don't agree. on ATI Drivers Geared For Quake 3? · · Score: 1

    I don't agree at all..

First and foremost, you should keep in mind Quake 3 is a Game first and a benchmark second. Just because ATi optimize their drivers to improve Quake 3 performance to a certain extent doesn't mean they're manipulating benchmark scores. It means they're improving the performance of the Game for its customers.

There are at least a dozen other applications out there used for benchmarking graphics cards. Optimizing a single application like Quake 3 won't sell anymore cards for them. Especially since despite their optimizations the Radeon 8500 is still slower than the GeForce 3.

How would this be any different than optimizing a program to take advantage of instruction sets on an Intel Processor vs an AMD processor. Commonly done and a widely accepted practice, but when it's done to get more frames out of a graphics card people freak out.

    BS.. total BS.
