This kind of thing is easily preventable by issuing a SecureID or SafeWord tag to people. True, it will cost money, but it's comparatively cheap considering the alternatives.

  5. Re:If it ain't broke... on XM and Sirius Merger? · · Score: 1

I got Sirius back when XM still had commercials, that was the deciding factor. I had a rental car last week with XM and had a lot of time to check it out. It sucks compared to Sirius. XM repeats songs much more, and they aren't really very good songs.

Sirius plays a lot of stuff that no ClearChannel stations will play. XM is basically just repackaged ClearChannel music. Sirius plays a lot of Top 100 stuff, but there's a very appreciable amount of stuff I've never heard of before and is just simply amazing. I've bought a ton of albums (mostly through the iTunes music store) because I heard them on Sirius. Tegan and Sara, Muse, The Killers. Maybe they are playing this stuff on broadcast now, but I haven't listened to broadcast for 2 years, I can't take 22 mins of commercials every hour.

In any case, a Sirius/XM merger would suck. XM influence is bound to mess up Sirius programming.

I just set it up, and it works extremely well.

I just set a custom prefix to use on my phones to tell it to route out Bellster, next step is to make all calls default through Bellster, and then fallback to my Voicepulse account or my local phone line.

I called a buddy in NYC over it and he couldn't even tell it was VOIP. Not that I'm surprised, I've been doing VOIP for awhile now.

Now all someone needs to do is come out with a little arm based box that runs it for use in your home, or a modified Xbox distro with asterisk. You don't need a Zaptel card if you have Vonage/Voicepulse/packet8/etc.

  9. Re:Why do you need a PBX? on P2P Meets PSTN, With Bellster · · Score: 1

  10. what FWD used to be on P2P Meets PSTN, With Bellster · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is what FWD used to be back in 2000 or 2001. I don't think it ever made it past the beta stage. It wasn't P2P persay, but anyone using the network shared their phone line to make calls in their local calling area.

When you signed up, you put in the area codes/prefixes that were local, and when someone made a call, custom software on the Cisco ATA-182 device checked with the server to see if someone resided in that area and had an open line. If so, the call was routed over the net, the remote ATA-dialed the number, and you were patched through. If no one was in that area, your local ATA device dialed it out on your own phone line.

The project was damn cool. However, the ATA-182 had some serious hardware bugs, and probably was the greatest contributor to the demise of the project. The original plan was to get FWD branded ATA's into stores like Best Buy so anyone could pick one up and contribute. As far as making money, I think they were betting on profit from hardware sales, but I'm not sure.

FWD went away for awhile, and then re-emerged in its current incarnation. Hopefully this will address some of the security problems that were present in the beta, like the ability to dial a remote user's device by IP and be patched through to a dial tone. By doing this, you avoid the access policies and you could dial 911 or make LD calls on someone else's phone. Not good... at least for the victim.

  11. what Real needs to do on Real Pays For Legal MP3 Playback On Linux · · Score: 1

Honestly, I don't install RealPlayer unless I absolutely need it for something, which is rare. I'm still pissed and annoyed at them for putting ads in their product and for installing links to the program in 90 different places when I installed it on windows years ago. AFAIK, the linux version is not like that at all, but still, I'm annoyed.

  15. MS office on Apple's Rumored Office Suite · · Score: 1

I use Office 2004 for Mac, and it's far from slow. As much as I dislike MS, Office 2004 really is a nice product. Office on the Mac works much better than it does under windows. Small things in the interface make it more usable, and it seems much more responsive. Entourage works awesome for talking to the corporate Exchange server also. All of my calendaring works great, and the integrated Project Center is a lifesaver.

What we are really missing is a way to view and edit Visio VSD files. OmniGraffle will do Visio VSX files, but since Visio saves in VSD by default, it makes it a pain for us network engineers with Macs to deal with Visio files created by others. And when you deal with a network that has 20,000 devices and hundreds of gigs of network diagrams, you absolutely must resort to Windows for dealing with them.

Replicating all of the functionality of Office 2004 for the Mac is going to be a daunting, if not impossible task. But, for most users, they don't need all of those features.

While this may be true, just look how long it took them to move away from the G3. The G3 came out in 1998 or so, and they didn't retire it until the end of last year.
