  1. WARNING to my European Brothers on EU/UK Retailers Gear Up For PSP Launch · · Score: 3, Interesting

When the PSP and the DS first came out, there was some question as to which would turn out to be the better purchase. Since their release, the answer has become unfortunately apparent: Nintendo is the clear winner. And I say that as a guy who first bought the PSP and then, as the months flew by with NO NEW GAMES, had to shell out the cash to buy another game system.

The DS is technically inferior, in terms of pure computing power. However, in terms of design, it stands as a testament to which of these two companies has been doing this the longest. Nearly indestructible with a great clamshell design and two huge screens (with no $#%@#$%'in dead pixels), the DS rocks hard. What I originally dismissed as a gimmick - the touch screen - has turned out to be a blast. It's essentially a portable gaming system with a mouse. And the games... Even if we forget the pre-existing Advance library, the games for the DS have been coming fast and strong, with plenty of A-list titles.

Now, if you want to watch movies on it, PSP of course. But if you actually like games, the choice is clear: big N all the way. I know I'm going to get accused of fanboyism here, so allow me to stress this again: I bought the PSP _first_, thinking I'd chosen the winner in this race. I was painfully wrong.

  3. Re:PS2? on The Soul Still Burns · · Score: 1

The 3 versions were identical save for a) graphics and b) a single extra character. The PS2 lost in terms of graphics, as could be expected; Gamecube was much better, and XBox a little better than the 'cube. As for special character, XBox got Spawn, PS2 got Heihachi (from Tekken - a boring, pointy-haired old Japanese man), and THE GAMECUBE GOT LINK.

So, given the choice, fans of the series obviously went for the Gamecube or XBox version, with the only people buying the PS2 version doing so because they're huge Tekken fans and/or they only own a PS2. However, with the choice of systems removed, those folks (myself included) who got the XBox or GC version would gladly purchase the PS2 version.

It does seem a little surprising that it's not a PS3 title, but we've got to play SOMETHING while waiting for the next gen. Frankly, I've been a little disappointed with the lack of new games in the past month, and I'm glad not everyone is jumping on the new system bandwagon just yet.

This one is a pet peeve of mine. A character-for-character English transcription of the Japanese title is "Katamari Damashii". Simple, only one way to pronounce it. For some bizarre reason, they changed it to "Katamari Damacy" when it came here. WHY did they take a perfectly acceptable and easily pronounced title and obfuscate it like that!? Somehow, I doubt people whose minds can't handle the odd non-English spelling "shii" are going to be the target audience for this particular game...

Nah, I need HD support. Because if I'm going to play in full, glorious, widescreen HD on my other two consoles, I'm not about to take the technical leap backwards. I mean, really, why bother? If they don't care about power (and don't forget, power describes things like physics and AI as well as graphics), why release another console? Why not release the 'Cube in another color or something?

  11. Re:Uhm, no... on Guild Wars Gone Gold, Previewed · · Score: 1

Having played about 16+ hours in the last preview weekend event, I suspect you're thinking of a completely different game. ALL gameplay takes place in instances. You _NEVER_ run across another player outside of your team (the maximum size of which was 4 players last I checked) except in the town areas - which are indeed little more than in-game chat rooms with questgivers and shops - or prearranged PvP battles. While the gameplay itself isn't very Diablo-like, the model of "hang out with everyone until it comes time to go kill things by yourself or with a couple friends" is certainly reminiscent of such, as both myself and many other players commented on without first seeing it mentioned elsewhere.

I like Guildwars, and I'm not positive that these unique qualities preclude it from being called an MMO, but I don't see why it matters. Classify it however you want; it's still an interesting and enjoyable game.

  12. Re:gamecube? on Katamari Damacy 2 Due In July · · Score: 1

I agree that the "feel" of the game would fit the cube. However, it's not gonna happen, for two reasons: a) Nintendo doesn't get small games like this because they shun all but the largest 1st and 2nd party developers. b) The lack of dual analog sticks would take away one of the major fun parts of the game: the unique control scheme.

Yes, but still, there's no excuse for its horrible quality, even excusing the fact that the information is outdated. I mean, seriously, you'll see it once you get it: you can't go a page without a serious typographical error of some sort. The sort of things a high school student would catch on his first read-through of the rough draft.

  15. A warning on the strategy guide! on World of Warcraft Details Announced · · Score: 5, Informative
If you buy the strategy guide, make sure you do it for the Penny Arcade stuff. In terms of being an actual guide, it's crap. Information is incomplete or outdated, and typos are at a one-per-page ratio AT LEAST. And we're talking really obvious stuff, like sentences ending halfway through and such, or huge chart titles in colored title plaques being mispelled: "Enchanments". And boy was I surprised to learn, having played the open beta, that I was losing XP when I died and Tauren have to quest for Plainsrunning (both these features were taken out several versions ago), among numerous other inaccuracies.

In short: this guide was put together EXTREMELY quickly, long before the final version of the game, and it shows. BOY, does it show. Use http://worldofwarcraft.com for info on classes, races, etc., and avoid this book.

...unless you want the PA cartoons; those are quite funny.
