Man, dunno how i'm gonna feel on my lowly powerbook though.. how do you other geeks deal with girlfriends whose laptops are better than yours? aarrgghh...:)
Simple, the part of the Slashdot readers who aren't total geek stereotypes don't mind this situation. And for the rest, the situation would never occur in the first place.
And this brings me to an interesting question...how many ways can you implement "one click"?
There are an infinite number of ways to implement this idea. Remember, the implementation is the software application that drives the site, not the user interface of the site.
Do you remember the last time when Connectix sold it's Playstation emulator to Sony.
There was lots of talk about how good this would be, since Sony could cerate an official platform for selling PSX games to mac and pc users, since Sony was supposed to lose money on consoles this would make perfect sense. Of course, this did not happen, Sony chose to kill it instead.
Now, why do I get the feeling that the exact same thing will happen again?
Actually, according to something a professor told our class, men stand a 1/50 chance of having features as good as Ken's, while women stand a 1/100,000 chance of having features as good a Barbie.
Yeah, but remember that 76% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
Like OpenDoc, any developers who adopted it were out of luck when Apple decided to abandon it. It'll be a while before Apple are trusted again.
There's a huge differance here since Apple provides the full source for their implementation that runs on Mac, Windows and soon Linux. It doesn't matter if Apple decides to abandon it, it's still out there for every developer who needs it.
How is this relevant, Sony/Ericsson is a mobile phone manufacturer. They don't provide the network access. All theyr'e interested in is makeing a modem that you'll rather but than whatever Nokia is shipping. Putting this kind of functionality into the modem will definetely make that happen.
Also, I know for a fact that Ericsson have done a lot of reseash into mobile phones that automatically use normal digital DECT wireless phone networks available in many workplaces, when available. So no conspiracy with the service providers here.
The TV Linux Alliance consists of ACTV, Apple, ATI, Broadcom, Concurrent Computer, Conexant, Convergence Integrated Media, iSurfTV, Liberate, Lineo, MontaVista, Motorola, Pace Micro, ReplayTV, STMicroelectronics, Sun Microsystems, TiVo, Trintech, WebTV, and Worldgate.
It's interesting to note that Apple is a member of this group. Apple has been rumored for some time to be developing new "digital lifestyle" deveices to follow up on the iPod. Perhaps a iPVR is comming next.

who the hell looks at a laptop as an investment?
Actually, the PowerMac I bought in January 2000 can't possibly have dropped as much in value as the tech-stocks i sold have done since.
If your going to try to get cheap karma at least get it right.
Actually both references are perfectly cromulent.

I predict a wave of creativity in ways of making updated 50's tunes from european bands.
I doubt that, since their record companies will tell them that they wont be able to sell these recordings in the US without paying steep royalties.
The 728x90, a newly created IAB ad size, provides an expansive horizontal lens through which consumers can view products and brands online.
Wow, these advertising people sure know how to sell a product, this almost makes it sound as if it was a good thing.
The internet is a MMORPG.
/. certainly is one.
At least
...you could run it on Solaris too.

RIAA & MPAA & everyone else knocking on your door.
I can't imagine anyone knocking on your door, unless you use it to share their content.
Which does a service provider make more money on?

I would, but I have an unsupported computer running an unsupported browser in an unsupported country.
Jeremy Beker has more informations about using iSync to syncronize calenders, addresses, etc. without using .Mac
I think we just pushed his webserver down the stairs.
The webserver has been protected.
You may be unable to eject certain copy-protected audio discs, which resemble Compact Discs (CD) but technically are not.
Apple would never have used such a title.
No, but the new "windtunnel" PowerMacs have speed holes. They make the mac go faster.

Prior art exists, it's called a line.
The ability to do this on the mac may be a new thing. /.../ But it's been around for a long time. At least 3 years.
Well, it never said that it was a new invention. That's probably the reason it's published in the Apple section and not the Science section.
The point is, the mac os/sound card driver doesn't provide a user interface for this feature but now it's available through a third party app.
Yeah, if the mars rover would be covered with organic debris. I think that would be bigger news than self cleaning glass though.
