    3) Make a microsoft sponsored Top set box

    4) Make a nice quiet, cheap, fast enough, linux web / email / ftp server / etc, sponsored by microsoft!

    5) All of the above? ;-)

Personaly i can not wait. The xbox is nice and small, and still relativly quiet. I think my first use for it will be to hook up a (usb?) network to it, and use it to play movies and mp3's from my server on my tv, saving my self the hassle of having to drag around notebooks or dedicate a big, ugly noisy pc to that function.

Then hook up a nice wireless usb keyboard w/ intergrated trackball, and do a full screen galeon to create a nice web surfing / topset box experiance from the comfort of my couch.

Then maybe hook up all the posible home automation gimics to a nice interface thru the xbox / tv, and be able to control my house from my tv?

Then, install some tv cards on my server, and pipe its output to the xbox .. posibly extend with those nice linux mpg recording programs to make my own tivo style setup

Also, I wonder if my current colocation facility will accept xbox's ?

Man, the posibilities are endless, for a little under 300 bucks (and going down) and the sheere thought of microsoft sponsoring my linux projects, it's worth every bit of effort these developers are putting in to it!

A lot of GNU tools are not a part of the OS either.. gcc, and other devel tools do not _have_ to be included, whats more, for all you know i could be using intel's compiler.

Then the lower level tools (for example: ls, rmdir, mkdir, etc) all have valid counterparts that are non GNU (such as many embeded developers know, the GNU tools are not always desiriable).

Now the last point, how how would define what is and isnt part of the OS? Is creating a directory 'part of the OS' ? is being able to send mail or ssh or ftp part of the OS? is a web or file server part of the OS?

Especialy with linux distributions, this line of what is and isnt part of the OS is extremely vauge, and can in no way be drawn as 'GNU is, the rest of the world isnt'.

You also seemed to very confidently seem to skip over the fact that a lot of other groups (BSD, Redhat, cygnus, etc) have contributed a lot to the existing GNU tools, and added quite a few to them. (file system manipulation, networking, startup -)

However, (almost) all distributions include tool sets and programs from redhat, mandrake, the apache group, the xfree group, gnome, kde, etc, etc.. So folowing his logic we should actualy be refering to

    GNU/Apache/XFree/Redhat/Mandrake/Debian/Gnome/KD E/ Linux ?

To me it seems unfair to specificly having to mention one component, and leave the rest, equaly hard working, software groups out of the title..

And yes, i do agree with stallman that we need to value our freedom, and we need to keep growing awareness with people that it's not only about open source (for some it is, which is ok to) but can be / is also about freedom. However i do think he is picking the wrong battles to fight..

Mozilla is trying to move away from using gdk for its font rendering to make it more portable and less reliant on gdk. Also it should be more flexiable and faster.

I gues the difference in size comes from the fact that it takes more code to use Xft directly then to use libgdkxft. (this is kinda obvious, since the Xft using code is then in libgdkxft).

Bottom line though, the libgdkxft patch didnt have a chance to get included in main stream mozilla, where as this ones probably does.

Also a nice amount of squid clusters could realy help out here..

I think that if you would release a complete high-tech network design on this style of setup, you could truely create a decentralised, flexible and unstopable network.

Now imagine, if they would link up a lot of outgoing gateways (cable, adsl thru ip masq), and allow notebook users to link up @ any location in the city thats within the area covered.
