Before we say this guy has no clue.. maybe he's smarter then we're giving him credit. Indeed he meantioned KDE and GNOME. They are nothing but WMs running on top of Linux. Just like WIN95 was nothing but a file manager / WM running on top of DOS!! Perhaps tha'ts all Win2000 is and DOS is just masked really well? eh?
Yeah.. well even before we had things like palm pilots or digital cameras or *gasp* the macintosh piratier(er I mean MP3 player).. there was e-mail. All you really need is e-mail at work.. and e-mail at home.. and a cable modem (or dial-up if your paitent). But for those really big documents there's always FTP.. FTP up and then FTP down.
Ummm... I know you said USB.. But I have a PS/2 Mouse.. which I have "HOT SWAPPED" from my Linux desktop with no problem.. Windows on the other hand.. if I tried that would instantly say.. hey no mouse! and if I plugged it back in would still say.. hey no mouse! until I rebooted...
You've got issues then. I've had netscape crash.. and other applications... poorly written sfotware should not be able to bringdown the operating system if it's running correctly... so
Exactly my point.. "Reboot when software required it" Software should not require you to reboot.. that's just bad practice! And you say you crashed.. but it was Norton's fault... I don't care.. it STILL shouldn't have crashed!!! The program maybe.. the os NO! Nothing should take the O/S down... no program running on it should have that kind of power.. but yet your norton did. And when you install programs you need to reboot... once these problems are taken car eof well it will be good then...
Greee.. I typed this all in and Slashdot died and Ie wouldn't go back and kept displaying a "Friendly Error" insteady of just a dialog box! AHHHHHHHHHH! *stifle the anger*
Anway.. Microsoft needs to do what Linux has been doing for ages and what Macintosh is currentyl doing. Forget about upgrading like they are currently doing and do a re-write.. making sure everything is secure and works right!
Sure they say windows 2000 isn't on MS-DOS but really? So we see: Starting Windows ||||||||||||| Instead of: Staring MS-DOS......
There's no difference.. and while the stabilility has gotten better... it's not good or near linux.
Active Directories.. don't even talk to me about that! They are confusing and complex! Novell is so much easier to use. Goodness Bill! Just startover.. don't try to release a new O/S every year! Take 2 or 3 and let's make this thing good. We don't need to upgrade and for goodnessgracious Bill, dump the XP "simplification"
Yeah I have it working on an HP-PC. (Pocket PC) Windows CE. It's not nearly full screen and on a 14.4 modem it's slow.. but I bet on a ethernet card on a cable modem it wouldn't be half bad. Speaking of which.. know of any ethernet cards that work with the Windows CE o/s?
It's been noted in the past that Microsoft and other big companies (Auto-Cad) often just randomly send out audit notices in hopes of scareing you into a confession (either going out and buying licenses [hence making you guilty] or else calling them).
Interestingly if you type in the IP for the windows2k machine it's blank.. however, if you type in the IP for the freeBSD machine it's up.. LOL 0nw3nz3d??
This actually isn't true... I e-mailed the support department..... and included all relevant info.. oh well... I've just never had a good time with them.. even when I call them!!!
If it weren't for the fact that my car got hit in the back and the back tire was twisted I'd still be able to drive it. Or.. if it weren't for the fact that a cracker got into my computer systema nd fdisked the drive I'd still have a server running.... or.. If it weren't for the fact that the boat sprung a leak it would still be floating (give me a break!!!!)
Interestingly enough I was reffered to snapnames as well.. and I notice on snapnames that:
#1 You pay like $60 even if you never get the domain (that's some nice cash)
#2 Something, which I can't find now... led me to believe that perhaps snapnames.com was owned at least in part by Verisign... but I can't recall what it was now.
#3 Why is it that some domain names come up X so that you can't "automagically" snap them? Like they come up X as in can't be purchased now (that's fine) but also an X in can't auto-magically renew them!!!
Hrmm.. all very strange... This isn't the first time that verisign has held domain names hostage.
So.. let me get this straight. Verisgn realizes that they basically "run" the internet and as a result they don't care if they blow customers off. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had major issues with Verisgn. Even writing to them for a simple answer to a simple question about how often domain names are flushed from their database results in them coming back to me with a request for more information. I ask them
"> How often do you guys "flush" your database so that expired domain names > become public again? There are some domain names (even ones I've owned > but not renewed that after a year are still in the database)."
and they say:
"Please know we genuinely want to help you in this matter. In order for us to assist you please send the following to: customerservice@networksolutions.com
a) A detailed description of your concern or question b) The domain name c) account number (if applicable) d) Any NIC tracking numbers you may have received. These
appear in the subject line of the header of all messages
sent from VeriSign (example: NIC-010409.3ee1)"
What Ever! I included more then enough information in my e-mail. Perhaps the fact that Verisng is "god" of internet domains and NSI is the reason they haven't expired domains that have expired since 1 - 1 1/2 years ago!!!?!?
True.. didn't think of this =) Instead of using the list to avoid them, we can all use it, print it out and go down there with weapons and pummel those spammers:)
It's always fun to invite your neighbors over to your house and then as they get confortable and think you're nice, suddenly invest in some walls and keep them there hostage! MUAHAHAH =)

Are you by any chance a member of the Wings of Williamsport? (I saw the "stump jumpers 4 life"

I still don't understand how it can playi n a regular CD player but not on a CD player on a computer?!?! how does it know.
wait no.. it's only blank on the w2k IP.. the FreeBSD ip is still chugging along.. ROFLOL yeah I really want to purchase MS products now!
Dont' know.. if you go to the IP for the freeBSD site (old one) the site is still there.. however the new IP shows up blank (w2k) woops! hehe
Interestingly if you type in the IP for the windows2k machine it's blank.. however, if you type in the IP for the freeBSD machine it's up.. LOL 0nw3nz3d??
And the site is now completely blank LOL

Spam is bad enough, wouldn't want to run into the guys that actually send it out :)
