No it's not. For the US, NPD has been reporting that the Wii has been selling in the upper 300,000s to low 400,000s each month consistently since the beginning of the year. The PS2 has been selling in the 200,000s during the same time period. In Japan, the Wii's outselling the PS2 by an even more dramatic margin.

Looking at the graphs on VGChartz (which although not perfect is in the ballpark), you can see that the Wii has vastly outperformed the PS2's first year of sales.

That is an outright lie. The average game player is 33 years old and has been playing games for 12 years.

In all likelihood, ESA is using the broadest definition of game player conceivable in order to support their position. The statistic isn't really meaningful if you count people who do online crossword puzzles as game players. Also, they say "average game player" not "average console game player".

Games aren't just for children, but to try to suggest that the children aren't the largest segment of the console market is just silly. Think about it: when you go to the video game section of a store, do you usually see more kids or adults browsing through the games?

If Nintendo allowed an AO game on one of their systems, they would likely face a boycott from parents' groups. And while there are a significant number of adult gamers, the lost sales from not releasing the game aren't as big as the lost sales from a boycott. It's not really fair that adult gamers have to suffer just because parents' groups overreact, but them's the breaks.

If you've got enough data you can get around this problem by using only half of your data to estimate your parameters. Then you do a statistical test to see if your parameters fit the other half of the data. If you get a good result then you should be more or less safe using the whole data set to retune your parameters.

I'm not sure if 122 observations is enough data to support this kind of analysis though.

  13. Re:Population differances: on Sony Claims One Million PS3s Sold in EU / AU · · Score: 1

The size of the European console games market isn't proportional to Europe's population.

The size of Japan's console games market is roughly the same size as the console games market in North America. Europe and Australia together have a console games market a little smaller than North America or Japan. So considering the late launch, 1 million is actually better than they're doing in Japan and North America. PS3 is still a bit short of 1 million in Japan and their sales have fallen to about 10,000 per week. In North America they're a bit under 1.5 million and their sales are down to about 15,000 per week (it's struggling to outsell the GBA each week).

So Sony may be slightly less weak in Europe and Australia, but even there I don't think they're still WAY behind the 360 and Wii. Any PS3 fans thinking that Europe and Australia may save Sony are sorely mistaken.

Or at least, if they are, then they are probably amortized over the life of the asset. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_expenditure.

The idea is that if a company buys something that's going to last a long time, the cost for it needs to be spread out over the lifetime of the asset to prevent front loaded costs from distorting their profit reporting.

I think it's going to have to get to $200 before it can possibly achieve the sort of success that the PS2 had. You can claim that Sony is targetting a different demographic all you want, but the bulk of all consoles are still sold to/for children and teens. Parents have limits on what they are either willing or able to spend on something that may or may not spoil their children and once you go over $200 you're beginning to encroach upon these limits. Many (maybe even most) children and teens also lack the capability and/or discipline to save up more than $200 (there are, of course, exceptions).

This applies to all three of the new consoles. They all have to reduce their prices to $200 or less before many of their potential consumers will even consider making a purchase.
